""I do have weird OCD where I need to clean out my TiVo," she said. "Like we've had Ken Burns' 'The War' on there forever and we're not gonna watch it, like I'm not gonna watch it cause I'm too scared. Or we'll have back episodes of um, 'Meet The Press' -- I'm obsessed with my Sunday shows like 'Meet The Press' and 'Face The Nation.' ... They're like from before the election, I'm like 'I can't [delete them], I have to watch them' and [my husband says], 'It's already happened, you've already read everything you're going to read about this stuff.' TiVo guilt" isn't a new development -- a quick Google check offers articles using the phrase dating back at least two years -- and it has its parallels with procrastination involving previous technologies. (Who didn't have a stack of never-watched VHS tapes collecting dust?) But the explosion of TV channels -- not to mention TV shows, movies, music and webisodes available via the Internet -- has made the situ" - Thomas Hawk

I've definitely dealt with Tivo guilt. Interesting article - Shevonne Polastre
Topical/news stuff has a shelf life of maybe a couple of days, after which there's just no point in watching it, as too many news cycles have passed. Everything else I eventually get around to watching. - Eric P
My Media Center PC is full of shows that I know I will never watch. Still it's nice having a broad selection when you finally do decide to sit down and watch television. The biggest thing that has cut into my recorded TV consumption is Netflix. I suspect it's only going to get worse as Netflix further integrates into video on demand. - Thomas Hawk
Interesting. I think I've had an instance of that here or there. But eventually, I just say "to hell with it" and delete the unwatched show off the Tivo. - R. Alexander Spoerer
Thomas, what devices are you using to watching Netflix on? - Joel Tanner
I regularly go into the "Tivo Suggested" section and delete shows in there that recorded that we'll never watch. It drives Akiva crazy because those shows regularly cycle out if we don't watch them but I like to delete them before that happens anyway! - Rochelle
I don't have a Tivo. I do get a few things off the net, mostly from UKNova, sometimes watch Joost, I've got a whole load of stuff I'll probably never watch either. I almost never watch regular TV - I'd rather listen to podcasts and music or read a book to be honest... well ok, and I find an evening in Friendfeed usually infinitely more interesting, stimulating, and informative than television in any case! - Ian May
@Joel. Right now I watch my Netflix discs on XBox 360 extender units. I watch "watch now" on a laptop connected to a TV in our kitchen and on my Mac. I've been desperately trying to get vmcNetflix to work on my XBox 360s so that I can watch "watch now" there, but that software is still really buggy and I haven't been able to get vmcNetflix to work yet. I can actually get it to stream to my XBox 360s but there is no way to move the sound from mute or go to full screen mode without buying an XBox mouse. - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas Have you tried the new Netflix service with the Live Gold membership? If you buy a yr of the service it comes to like $4 a month (on top of your Netflix sub).... I haven't tried it yet, but for all the on demand content it seems well worth it for ~$14/month (unlimited 1 disc netflix + gold live). If I hear some positive reviews of the service I think I'll get a couple 360s. - Joel Tanner
Netflix on Xbox is sweet - John Cozen
@John Cozen ... worth the Live Gold membership? - Joel Tanner
I get the guilt but when I'm 75% full I start to get antsy. It's either my episodes of 'New Yankee Workshop' or the wife's 'Coronation Street' to go and we KNOW how that one turns out. - Andrew Smith
Lileks had a great word for this phenomenon - TiVobligation. We have dozens of unwatched movies and TV show son TiVo, going back a full year. - Mitch Wagner
@Joel: i play online often so $35-50/years is so worth it. If it was just for netflix, I would instead consider investing in a cable or graphics card that'll allow you to stream netflix to your computer, hooked up to your TV - John Cozen
Definitely can relate to this. The only solution I advocate is "delete." Realize a lot of television is pointless after a few months and even more so in a few years - your life will not hinge upon watching all the seasons of "Friends" in chronological order. My strategy to pick 1 or 2 shows tops to watch religiously (for me its BSG and Mad Men), and all else is expendable. - Jason Kaneshiro
@John I've got a Media Center, and like Thomas I have vmcNetflix installed.... but the vmcNetflix experience on the 360 isn't there yet. I figured if I got 360s for rooms other than where the Media Center is, I could have Netflix and Media Center in one device -- and working well. - Joel Tanner
@Joel, I'd rather get vmcNetflix working for free of course, but if I can't get it working I'll probably consider the XBox Live Gold. I have a few cards good for 1 mo. free that they sent me when they repaired my XBoxes. Do you know if the new XBox/Netflix service is up and running yet? I'd heard that it is not up for the general public yet but that there might be a site where you can get it early. - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas http://www.netflix.com/Netflix... Shows that it's available at Netflix.com, w/no mention of service limitations... so I'd guess it's up and running for everyone. I also just noticed that you can buy 12/mo Live Gold subs on amazon for $39. My next question is... can you use 1 Live Gold membership on multiple Xboxes for Netflix at the same time? - Joel Tanner
Joel that's a damn good question. I'd hope so. I certainly wouldn't want to pay a live gold membership for every xbox in my home. Does anyone else know the answer to that question. Maybe I'll try and sign up for the Live Gold service and test out the new Netflix later tonight if I can use my Live Gold membership on any of the XBoxes in my home. - Thomas Hawk
@Thomas If you do test it out, that would be great. I'll look fwd to your comments, and if you get the chance could you dm me on twitter @joeltanner ? Thanks! If it works, I'll be buying 2 360s in no time. - Joel Tanner
good question Joel. This weekend My GF was watching Netflix on the PC and I was streaming different on XBOX, but I'm not sure about 2 XBOXs. Regarding vmc, I agree it's barely useable. Have you considered watching from the netflix site in IE, routing the signal from your PC to your TV over HDMI, VGA or DVI?? - John Cozen
Most of my DVR space is taken up with movies... I like to have an assortment to choose from. But when it gets full, I have to either delete or export. I'd be quite bummed if it died and I lost that library. - Logical Extremes
@John Typically I try to use solutions that are non-geek friendly for ease of use... for the benefit of others, like my girlfriend, and house guests. If a solution simple and fluid enough to meet those standards I don't think it's ready for everyday use by anyone... its a hack. Alternatively, my gf watches netflix directly on her laptop fairly frequently. - Joel Tanner
@Thomas @John I found part of the answer... re:netflix ToS: streaming is limited to how many unlimited disc plans you have. 1 disc plan = 1 device, 2 disc plan = 2 device, etc. However, it says that's how many you can stream at the same time. This still doesnt answer the question about the Live Gold membership though. - Joel Tanner
@John, watching from the Netflix site via IE isn't really an option as my PC is in the attic and my XBox 360s are in the bedroom, living room and kitchen one and two floors below. I might try and check out the live gold thing tonight and see if it works on multiple XBoxes. I hope it does. - Thomas Hawk
Buy the Tivo to Desktop software and burn any program considered that valuable to disk. Then it can be played virtually anywhere. It's PC only though. - Roney Smith
@Thomas Ever test 2 360s+Live Gold+Netflix? - Joel Tanner
Joel, this thread suggests you can register up to 4 devices for Netflix streaming and play simultaneously on as many devices as your discs per month: http://forums.macrumors.com/sh... - John Cozen
