Probably my greatest regret in Beijing was opting to go home early one night instead of staying out w/ my friends at a bar where they later met up and spent the rest of the night hanging out w/ Usain Bolt. I just assumed he'd be sort of pompous, but my friends swear that he was a really nice and cool guy. - Ana
Ana, remind me if we're ever hanging out and a decision has to be made about interacting with a celebrity (like talking to the real Dwyane Wade or hanging with Usain Bolt), to not listen to you. - Dan Hsiao
Uh oh. Tom, if I get this camera, we won't be able to share our lenses and have redundancy. That's one of our special events! Actually, it's *two* of our 10 events! - Ana
well i can always just throw away my camera and get the nikon just to "copy" you. :) - eviltom
(although the only difference between this camera and the canon link i sent you is that the nikon can capture video. all the other specs seem to be the same.) - eviltom
"Frankly, it is hard to take anyone seriously who created a company motto reminding an organization not to be “evil” to their customers. Friendfeed now seems a little lamer to me than it did before." - Paul Buchheit via Bookmarklet
i like the 1 comment on his about page: "I’m looking for some help setting up SQL 2005 Web Services. I need some hands on training. Would you be able to help me as a consultant or trainer?" LMAO! - Morgan
Glad you got trash-talked in a way you can enjoy. :-) - Bruce Lewis
my login name is "eviltom" - does that count for anything? - eviltom
Better than being the Microsoftian who created the secret motto "Do be evil, but don't tell anyone" - Jason Carreira
It wasn't "trash talk". I don't think any of my comments were disrespectful to Paul personally. I have never been a fan of the slogan and never will be. To each his own I guess. You guys have fun with the discussion, eh? :) - Randy Holloway
I saw "hard to take anyone seriously" as disrespectful and "who created a company motto..." as Paul personally, but maybe that's just me. - Bruce Lewis via fftogo
No problem Randy, and no offense taken. I just thought it was kind of funny :) - Paul Buchheit
Evil is Live when reversed... now, what was the Microsoft's online brand again? ;) - Joni Moilanen
Bruce- fair enough. To clarify then, it would be better to say that I don't like that slogan and learning that Paul created it colored my perception of FriendFeed. Others can disagree, no personal disrespect intended. - Randy Holloway
Interesting. I've never particularly cared for Nike's "Just Do It" slogan, but if Dan Wieden (former ad man for Nike) went out and started up a cool new shoelace company, I can't imagine that my distaste for a slogan he created many years ago would in any way color my opinion of his fine, fine shoelaces. - Jeanette Martinez
am i the only one that thinks it's hilarious that a current msft employee would be bagging on a "former" goog employee's not lame new company simply because of a slogan that was part of a (goog) marketing campaign to differentiate themselves from the "evil empire" (msft) - all of which is ancient history - randy here's a clue, if you have to say "no disrespect intended" someone took it as disrespectful, i know i did when i read it - rock on paul, glad you're humored by this :) - mike "glemak" dunn
Paul didn't say “don't be evil” as a marketing slogan. - Amit Patel
Using the beta 'Friend List' feature, I've tried segmenting my friends into 'best friends', 'real-world friends', 'important people', 'pundits', 'must read', and 12 other ways, but it turns out that, by far, the most effective list is made up of those people about whom I answer 'yes' when I ask myself 'does thinking of this person make me smile?' - Kevin Fox
What a cool way to approach it. Those lists might overlap some in my case but I'll give it a try. - Todd Jordan
But are you smiling at them, or with them? - Paul Buchheit
What's funny is I was just quietly wishing for this feature to myself this morning. - Akiva Moskovitz
If I was smiling with them it would be a room, not a list. ;-P - Kevin Fox
tsk tsk Paul.. you can do better.. don;t bust his bubble !! - Peter Dawson
Mona N. and Mark Wilson are in my 'smile' list, hands down. Have a few others that will be in it as well :) - Tim Hoeck
this evolution of list names is going to be really fun to watch - a peek into how folks categorize their friends and develop organized groupings of social media relationships/groups to track / monitor / engage their network of friends - Susan Beebe
Does anyone find it odd that you can basically create a Group or Room...without anyone knowing they're part of it? - Rahsheen(isSoAwesome)
@Kevin, sorry for asking..did you mod comments on this thread ? just asking.. as I am seeing this is beta - Peter Dawson
The other part of the story includes "Earlier Saturday, China's double gold medalist Chen Zhong crashed out in the quarterfinals after initially being declared the winner. World champion Maria del Rosario Espinoza, the eventual winner in the women's over 67-kilogram (147.4 pounds) class, was to fight Chen in the semifinals but the judges overturned an earlier ruling and made Britain's Sarah Stevenson the winner of the quarterfinal bout. [snip] "It's been a really tough day, an emotional roller coaster," Stevenson said. "I would have been devastated if they hadn't changed the decision." - Ana
Chen Zhong should have, at the very least, kicked Stevenson in the head, if not the ref too. - Ana
I get it. WTF = World Taekwondo Federation - Richard Chen
Volleyball is my favorite sport. And I am so mad that NBC has decided to not show the Men's Final Live! oh well, I will go play the open gym and practice some kills to get over my anger! - Syed F Ahmad
This is from 4 days ago... Bolt ran that day, but it was just a heat. I'll have pictures up of last night's 4x100m relay soon... - Ana
ana's captioning productivity has gone up 1000% since i left! - eviltom
I wonder if the cameramen have to train to be fit enough to run alongside the track&field olympians on their victory laps. Their equipment doesn't exactly look light. - Dan Hsiao
"With 47 gold medals through Friday afternoon, China led the gold medal count by 16 over the United States and by 39 over Michael Phelps." - Bret Taylor via Bookmarklet
Shared for that quote alone... Pretty funny for the NY Times. - Bret Taylor
Phelps, if considered a sovereign nation, ranks 5th in total gold medals this year, and ties for 21st in total medals of any color. - Kevin Fox
If he formed a union with Stephanie Rice (AUS) together they'd be in third place after China and the USA. - Kevin Fox
Funny comparison... if he would be country. :D - Daniel Schildt
People here are obsessed w/ the medal count. There's updates posted on outdoor whiteboards and kiosks every three blocks, the news repeats it at the top of the hour, and it's the first thing people ask about after any event. - Ana
"But we didn’t think they were actually basketball players—although one of them did resemble Dwayne Wade." - actually, it looks like you saw the real DWade. and Chris Paul and Deron Williams, too. - David Vasileff
Wait seriously? We really just weren't sure, and actually joked about doing that--posting the pictures online and having the FriendFeed community help us figure out if they were the real guys. :) - Ana
yep. CP3 is in the red shirt with backwards cap. Deron is in the back with grey T and backward cap. - David Vasileff
no way! really? crap, why did he have to be so cynical. those guys really DIDNT look like pro athletes. crazy. - eviltom
As it turns out, it's hard sitting around for hours watching others compete at the top of their athletic ability. I'm exhausted. - Ana
I am also unable to cope with the crush of my own photos. I am finding myself declining social requests just so that I don't have an opportunity to take more photos and get more backlogged. - Ana
caption the photos later. That's got to be a bottleneck. Love the gymnastics posts tho. thnx - Josh Haley
at least ana is honest when she declines the social requests. instead of blaming jetlag, she just says that she needs to stay home to caption photos. - eviltom
Like Ana's first comment! And in response to your second comment - I totally know the Photo crush, I'm a year or more behind and there is not a day that goes by that it doesn't bother me. - Rachel L Fisher
Is this something you could outsource? - Jim Norris
Good point Jim, as Ana is in China I guess India would be her best outsourcing opportunity, I'll call for tech support on my Dell and ask for any volunteers while I'm on the line. - Steve Craft
We've already outsourced Ana's role to China, what more do we want? - Kevin Fox
"Yang Peiyi was replaced by Lin Miaoke who mimed "Ode to the Motherland" as her face was "not suitable" for the Olympics opening ceremony" - Karen Padham Taylor
"Dr Hamermesh's work shows that ugly people earn below the average income while beautiful people earn more. In Britain, attractive women enjoy a +1% premium. But in Shanghai, the figure was +10%" - Sanjeev Singh
Lin Miaoke is a very pretty little girl. There's nothing fake about that. - Alex Mendes da Costa
god like beaties,,,keso 's right ,we are all Yang Peiyi,我们生活在国家荣誉的包围之中 - qian
I am a chinese, and I hate the fake, especially in children. But this is only one small example. In the whole school, the children are taught by teachers who are doing bad example. - zgjie
This is a shame...though quite Chinese way.. - WooParadog
Badminton... 8 rows up from the courts! I was so excited walking
inside the stadium I actually started jumping up and down! - Ana via mail2ff
very cool. I just pulled up badminton live stream. they are showing JPN Sato/DEN Gade, now tied 1-1. very lively and excited crowd, indeed. - David Vasileff
didn't even notice they have streams for all three courts. crowd must be cheering the GBR/CHN mixed doubles match - what a match. unbelievable. GBR down 17-12 in final game finish 9-2 to win 21-19. wow. - David Vasileff
is jumping up and down in excitment outlawed by the government? the Chinese are a stoic people - eviltom
some good talent on the china team - they didn't seem to have much organization though. 3 of them in the nba, they should have done a bit better. - Maneesh Arora
Kinda ridiculous how they already have a Brett Favre section in the Jets' online shop. They sold over 3,000 jerseys on the first day. - Dan Hsiao via Bookmarklet
I don't care about the affair, but it stuns me how many people run for president knowing they have a big ol' skeleton in their closet. How could he have thought this wouldn't have emerged a month before the election? [Thanks Jonathan for the link] - Kevin Fox via Bookmarklet
Oh my god. I had no idea. I never even heard of the original allegations. - Ana
It was odd that the allegations didn't make too many headlines (I only read about the rumors on Wonkette) considering he was considered a top choice as a VP candidate - Roshan Vyas
bleah. well, we know he won't be the VP now. - Jason Kaneshiro
Aristotle even said you could be a good citizen without being a good man. The affair doesn't bother me much either. The fact that you'd go out to campaign with an active strategy of lying to the American people over and over again and be completely at ease with it....that's problematic. - Shellee
I'm not cut out to be a politician: I could never cheat on my wife. - David Muir
Ghah! Thank goodness he didn't beat Clinton and Obama. If he was the presumptive nominee and this came out now, he would have just thrown the election. What a jackass! - Paul Wilcox
He's just human I guess. Not worse than anybody else. - Rutger Blom
I disagree Rutger. He's certainly not worse than everybody else, but he's worse than some. Not everyone is quite that selfish with their ambition. (I'm judging based on running for election with such big skeletons, not the affair itself) - Robert Seidman
Robert, I agree that it was a very stupid thing to do considering his position. - Rutger Blom
@Sprague, I don't get it, are you saying he was the only person to cheat on his wife in 2006? Or there might have been some others, but you're pretty sure they were mostly politicians too? - j1m
america is prudish, it really should not be a big deal, in my opinion ... - gregory lent
"In an 11th-hour move that shocked the international athletic and political communities alike, the Chinese Olympic Team announced Wednesday that it will not be attending the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing due to "shocking, shameful, and ultimately dangerous environmental conditions" in the host city." - MG Siegler via Bookmarklet
I wonder if this just a start of bad things to come. - imabonehead
""I was very much looking forward to making China proud," said 100-meter hurdling champion Liu Zhang, who had expected to defend his gold medal in Beijing. "But, if I am honest, China should be ashamed of itself."" - Ana
As a Chinese, this is both painful and funny at the same time. - Clarence Chiang
A large sum of goods produced in China, are exported and consumed by the developed world, especially the US. That is to say the environmental and energy cost are consumed by them as well. You can agrue that those manufacturers should raise their energy efficiency or produce less waste, but aren't consumers and investors should be responsible for their the mass consumption of low priced goods and pursue for high margin? - Ray Chen
As China get rid of the "Factory of the World" in the future, there will be other countries taken this role, as long as the consuming power and current trade mechanism are still there. - Ray Chen
After watching the opening tonight...I'm having second thoughts about the truth of this, I don't think China will pull out her own delegates! And now the Onion wouldn't load :P - BeeLing
@ray chen: Before consumers and investors, how about non-Chinese companies being assigned some responsibility for contracting with suppliers in a way that allows for bad environmental practices and problematic labor standards. Because they have the ability to select whom they subcontract manufacturing to, and can dictate terms of their production, I would argue that they have more effective leverage over Chinese manufacturing practices than the Chinese government does. - Chester
@Chester: Totally agree with you. "dictate term", very accurate in describing their negotiation power. The current Chinese political and economical system will need some time to make a good trade off between GDP growth rate and environmental cost. It's a sad truth that it may need a US law like "Foreign Corrupt Practices Act" in the enviromental area to help resolving this. - Ray Chen
I'm starting to understand how plagiarized Onion articles become "real" news stories in China :) - Paul Buchheit
