System restore? You can go back to last week and restart your computer from there. Control Panel->System->System Restore tab - Anika Malone

System Restore can do this (but it's not really automatic), it is built into XP and Vista. Another way is to start using virtualization, something like VirtualPC, VMWare, Parallels, etc. - xero

You can use something like Symantec Ghost to do this also. They can do whatever they want to the computer, then in the middle of the night you can "reghost" the machine and it will be like new. Though it gets rid of everything they did, like wallpaper, appearance settings, cursors, etc. - xero

Considering the situation, you should first ask a couple of questions: 1) How many of the people are installing crap and why? 2) What are they installing and is it actually hurting anything most of the time? Sometimes it is just a few people, in that case you need to reign those people in either by education or reprimand. Sometimes people actually need to install things on a regular basis. etc. etc. - xero

Is this thing still going? I can't remember if I replied to this yet, but I say it depends on what will benefit you the most. Robert, you are a photo-maniac. I know that you have a few cameras laying around the house, but I don't know how many Macs you have. You have to remember that a 17" laptop sounds great on paper, but I know that you do a lot of traveling as well, so it might now suite your means.
