Jim, you weren't supposed to post that where Paul could see it! NOW how are we going to keep him off the street and out of trouble? Quick! Tell him he has to write lots of code to make coffee. - Bruce Lewis
"You've already voted for someone for this category within the last 24 hours!" - No I didn't! - Tobias Boonstoppel
I've never voted (online) this is my first time. - directeur
I'm having the same problem Tobias... I voted for one category and it seems to have blocked me from voting in any other category. :( - Michael Leggett
Only one member of our household has been able to vote. Others get the "You've already voted..." message. Different people on different computers, but same internet connection. Tried again today, but apparently need to wait a full 24 hours (supposedly you can vote once a day). - Anne Bouey
I voted for friendfeed except for best design. Not that the design is bad; it's just that I like Cooliris better. - Bruce Lewis

"I can't promise that your vote will end the war, fix the economy, or save the environment (that one is here), but I can promise that your vote might be counted." - Clare Dibble
"On iTunes over 3G:
Why does everyone think its the labels? I'd imagine this being more a concession from AT&T;, not the labels. Labels would love the chance to sell more songs, but AT&T; wouldn't be too thrilled with so much extra traffic on busy 3G networks when WiFi is effectively free to them..." - Q dub
"Simply highlight any text in the body of this post and a ‘Respond’ bubble should fade in near your mouse. As in Ubiquity, the bubble maintains a low opacity in order to be fairly unobtrusive unless you mouse over it. Clicking the respond button scrolls you to the comment box where it is now populated with the an html blockquote of the selected text." - Paul Buchheit

I think FF's works great - via bookmarklet, of course - highlight text, then click the Share on Friendfeed bookmark - it's ready to go (only minor request would be to be able to then highlight and share more to the post thread, via subsequent clicks of the bookmarklet) - Christopher Galtenberg
Wow, that's cool idea. Works well and it's much more faster then copypaste. - Kristian Salonen (krisu)
Any of you know how to intergrate this with wordpress? - Greg

"Past Performance Is Not A Guarantee Of Future Returns" etc. - Logical Extremes
At the beginning of 2008, his 13 for 13 made some sense (especially in hindsight). But the 12 for 2009 aren't as sensible. Now with the market still near decade lows, he's saying sell almost everything you haven't already sold? Even if the markets are going lower, how many investors will be able to get back in later such that getting out now will have made sense? - Logical Extremes
Gotta set up an imaginary friend for this guy - great recommendation - Christopher Galtenberg
He seems to be following the advice "don't try to guess the bottom of a market". As some say, "bottom pickers will be cotton pickers". In other words, wait for a clear confirmation that the market has bottomed before going long again. - Chris Lamprecht
"9. Buy the dollar." - i guess he isnt concerned about inflation - bob
Inflation is actually a really complicated issue. A lot of people are projecting inflation at some point, but when will it occur? Also, inflation of what? Fuel prices and housing have gone down, and many think they will continue to stay low. That's deflation. Also, the increase in the money supply is mostly through increases of credit lines to banks. If the banks don't lend, the money doesn't flow into the economy. And even then, it has to offset the massive de-leveraging that has/is occurring. - Chris White
Finally, there is concern that the dollar could be (massively) devalued against other currencies and/or gold. This might occur if other countries move their large treasury holdings to other currencies and/or assets. However, this requires they believe in the safety of those assets more than in the safety of the dollar, and so far that hasn't been the case. If we do see this kind of massive devaluation of our currency, I'm afraid canned goods and guns might be the best investments. - Chris White
Ignoring the "cents", the other units boil down to Energy * mass * distance^3 * time^4 in both the numerator and the denominator; so everything cancels out leaving only a measure of currency and whatever coefficients associated with the original units. - Q dub
"Francis said in a statement that “the US government should actively support the adult industry's survival and growth, just as it feels the need to support any other industry cherished by the American people." “We should be delivering [the request] by the end of today to our congressmen and [Secretary of the Treasury Henry] Paulson asking for this $5 billion dollar bailout,” he told CNN Wednesday. Flynt and Francis concede the industry itself is in no financial danger — DVD sales have slipped over the past year, but Web traffic has continued to grow. But the industry leaders said the issue is a nation in need. "People are too depressed to be sexually active," Flynt said in the statement. "This is very unhealthy as a nation. Americans can do without cars and such but they cannot do without sex."" - Bret Taylor

Well deserved noms. NOM NOM NOM NOMS! - Josh Haley
done. good luck! Hope you win them all. - Jim Jannotti
I would say "vote early and vote often", but that might be against the rules, so just vote now, and vote in all three categories :) - Paul Buchheit
hopefully I won't offend anybody, but I had to give Best New Startup to Dropbox, since I used them to sync my critical data between geographically dispersed machines. However, I voted for FriendFeed on the other two. Also, I really feel like FriendFeed should have been included as an option in some other categories. Is there a three category limit or something? - Jason Huebel
i tried to vote and it says i've already voted for someone in that category today, even though i hadn't. not sure why this is happening. could the site be registering votes from multiple users in the same household as votes from the same user? - Jessie
I voted for FF in all three categories (but I arrived at this post via Google Reader. :)) - Sean McBride
I voted for all three, even though I have no idea what the criteria is for being a good startup founder. Y'all seem awfully nice and down to earth, so that's a good thing. - Laura Norvig
I voted, I voted, and I voted. You better win, win, and win. Oh yeah, and kudos for the nominations! - Pete D
I love Friendfeed... But I think user voting means Friendfeed is virtually guaranteed victory in all 3 categories. Friendfeed is a social app where you can reach out to most of its users and ask them for votes, something which the other nominees cannot do. For e.g. I seriously doubt whether most of the Dropbox users have even heard of something called the Crunchies. - Nikhil Dandekar
"The boy told police he learned to drive playing Grand Theft Auto and Monster Truck Jam video games. "He was very intent on getting to school," said Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins. "When he got out of the car, he started walking to school. He did not want to miss breakfast and PE."" - Private Sanjeev
My driving instructor said I drove well and asked whether my parents had taught me to drive. I said I had never actually driven before that day — I learned by playing video games (Pole Position, Spy Hunter). That also might explain why I drove so fast my first time. - Amit Patel
I liked his unstoppable urge to go to school. - Sanjay Ghemawat
GTA... Good thing he didn't go around carjacking. - Richard Chen
I wonder how his parents are considered to have 'endangered' him? Allowing him to play games which made him think he could drive? - Robin Barooah
"I am now prepared to subject myself to the laws of the land and fact the consequences thereof." -- Raju is well-known through Silicon Valley and used to sponsor many events and dinners in the area. On a recent visit here, he was honored for his work in bringing 911 services to the poor of India. This recent revelation is absolutely surreal. - Christopher Sacca

And their profits/assets were largely fictional? - Paul Buchheit
Yeah. I know. It is confusing because of how frank the author is. This is the Chairman of the company personally admitting to inflating the revenues, profits, and assets of the company for years until he could no longer keep it up. Fraud on an amazing scale brought to light in such an approachable letter. Like I said, this fascinates me. - Christopher Sacca
I wonder how much of this kind of stuff is going on out there. All kinds of scams can be sustained when everything is going up, but collapses quickly when there's a reversal. - Paul Buchheit
Indeed. It's just particularly interesting to me considering how close he is to so many folks around here. I think he was honored at Google once, actually. - Christopher Sacca
Any idea how much "Rs 5,040 crore" is worth? - Gabe
1 Crore = 10,000,000 Rupees. There are approximately 48 Rupees to the Dollar. - Christopher Sacca
I think the Warren Buffett quote is "Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked." - Chris White
I wonder to what extent Madoff inspired this. A well known effect: when suicides are reported in the news, suicide rates / accidents for people fitting the profile of the victim go up. Also if I were running a scam like Madoff or Raju I would be more likely to donate to charity / etc to assuage my guilt, so that doesn't seem anomalous to me. - Private Sanjeev
I didn't mean to sound like I think his charitable work is anomalous. Agreed. I was just caught off guard by knowing this guy. - Christopher Sacca
I'm mystified by the inclusion of Judge Dredd (“I am the law. Put down your weapons and prepare to be judged.”), 40 First Dates (“There’s nothing like a first kiss”), but the rest are ok. - Jess Lee

Perhaps I missed it but...No Return of the Jedi? WTF? - Carlton
I will have to agree with the comments on the blog. Hitch? Bruce Almighty? WTH! - Shevonne Polastre
@Simon I was just about to say the same thing. - Joey Gibson
Movie buff nit-pick: Forrest Gump came out in 1994, not 2004. - Benjy Weinberger
@Mike I LOL'd at the Naboo quote... (It was from episode ii, not i.) - Dan Hsiao
Additional nitpicks: I'm fairly certain "Hasta la vista, baby" was from Terminator 2, not the original (John Connor had to teach it to Arnold). Also, Mike and Dan, it was from Episode III. - Brian Chang
@Carlton: Maybe they weren't sure if "Aieeeeeeeeee!" and "Yub yub" counted as one-liners or not. - Brian Chang
It's "Han Solo", not "Hans Solo". WTF. Lots of problems with this list. - Andy Bakun
No no, they're actually quoting Han Solo's adopted German brother. - Brian Chang
excellent list, inspiring me to write one for non-us movies. there are gems out there too! - Pascal Bouvier

It increasingly pisses me off to find more and more economists who predicted this shit dead on and no one paid any attention. - Aaron Brazell
Many would say he did it by predicting the same thing year after year. I won't go so far as to go the "broken clock" route... congratulations... he got it right. Now what really matters is does that mean you should follow his advice going forward. To determine that I certainly wouldn't just look at one year's results. If you followed his advice for the last, say, 10 years, what would your RoR look like compared to other analysts and strategies? - Ken Sheppardson
@technosailor I would like to see who those economists supported for president, my guess is Ron Paul. - Christian Burns
Ken's (kshep's) wider perspective on this is right on. - Micah Wittman
j1m: Sure it has. But where would acting like "this is the year it's going to crash" for those ten years have gotten you? I'd be much more impressed by someone having actually predicted this would be the year than I am by someone who's been saying this is the year for the past ten. - Ken Sheppardson
