This sounds kind of weird but I find it much easier to "maintain friendships" online than off, simply because of the lack of available time to meet with people in meatspace. FF (and other networks) gives me the ability to socialize when it's convenient for me. And the fact that I can participate in a conversation not in real time is also convenient. We're here because of the community of folks (and friends), like hanging out in our favourite pub. The linking/sharing is much faster than updating my website pages and I can edit on any public computer.
