This sounds kind of weird but I find it much easier to "maintain friendships" online than off, simply because of the lack of available time to meet with people in meatspace. FF (and other networks) gives me the ability to socialize when it's convenient for me. And the fact that I can participate in a conversation not in real time is also convenient. Yes! This is the catch-22. We want our close friends to get this and enjoy it, but the unwashed masses we don't, and yes Baratunde, we can't pick and choose. It's like affinity groups. We're here because of the community of folks (and friends), like hanging out in our favourite pub. Reasons I YouTube/FriendFeed/Del.icio.us/Facebook/LinkedIn are (1) 60% Personal scrapbook for myself, family, and close friends. The linking/sharing is much faster than updating my website pages and I can edit on any public computer. (2) 20% As a "white pages" for 10-30 yr high school, college, grad school, work, and social friends/acquaintances to find me (3) 10% As a "yellow pages" for business networking (4) 5% For new people to find my blogs/micro-blogs (5) 5% For finding new conversations & friends - Mitchell Tsai
