Business Models on the Web | Professor Michael Rappa

"Etsy is seeking a skilled lead software architect. As a member of Etsy's engineering team and reporting to the CTO, you will support a rapidly-growing, high-traffic 24x7 web environment. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on developer who is passionate about performance and knows when to buy, build, leverage open source, and/or use SaaS (software as a service) solutions. Etsy is a startup and we especially value candidates who are passionate about what we are doing and are willing to step outside of their specific job descriptions to do whatever it takes to create the best experience possible for Etsy's users." - mike "glemak" dunn via Bookmarklet

You mean like digg? - AJ Batac
AJ: Not bury and points. Like in the sense of starring or marking as a favorite. Digg has a thumbs up or down feature and bury. I don't care about accumulating points for likes. For me it is for archival and linking reasons. Discovery and branching out conversations. - Rolf Schewe
No. If you like a comment, just thank the commenter for commenting. With a formal upmodding/downmodding system, people compete for points. - possible248

Amazon and TiVo Somehow Make 99 Cent Films Seem Too Expensive
Monday at 11:52 pm - Link
I feel for you Louis... I have gotten a few of the Amazon rentals on my Tivo.. not impressed. They were so-so, but I have had skipping and artifact issues... the sad thing is, they aren't streaming, they are downloaded! Let's just be thankful Netflix is coming to Tivo this month :) Here's hoping for HD... but I doubt it. - Tim Hoeck
Hmm. We've rented from Amazon on our TiVo for almost a year now and have never seen problems with stuttering, skipping, or noteworthy artifacts. The rentals aren't perfect but, in our experience, they haven't been worse than recorded programs. That said, I haven't tried renting since the Fall 2008 update. - Seth Long
growing pains maybe? - .LAG
I get HD on my Xbox 360 :-) I get Netflix, Hulu, and games, too. :-P - Jesse Stay
@Tim- What is the file format for Amazon, and is DRM used? - Mike Chelen
Even with Netflix, the Xbox, and HD Tivo, all offering movies to me, I still find myself renting on AppleTV more than I care to admit. It is so seductively simple and great looking. - Caleb Elston
agree with caleb - we have same options but tend to opt for apple tv more often than not - ex: watched season 1 of mad men over a few weekends so we could better understand season 2 - mike "glemak" dunn
The price should be reduced until demand really kicks in. I would pay 50 to 75 cents, but 99 cents does seem like a waste. - Roney Smith
Hey Louis, I'm the director of operations for Video Downloads for TiVo. Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I think you must have a bad drive, because what you experienced isn't typical at all. I had no problems with either title you rented. Can you drop me a line (estephen@tivo.com) and we can do some troubleshooting? I'll also make sure you get a refund for the two rentals. - Stephen Mack
Stephen, appreciate the note and good to see you here. Our TiVo HD unit is doing great with all other media, so I hope it is not a drive issue. Let's connect offline. I'd love to talk about a lot more than a mere $1.98. - Louis Gray
Hey look... see.. FF community rocks!! - Susan Beebe (Santa Claus)
I'm having fine results with HD movies on AppleTV. OTOH I like YouTube much better on TiVo than ATV. - Michael Markman

not sure if this is worth $25 but looks promising - anyone else using this on iphone? - mike "glemak" dunn via Bookmarklet
not using on iPhone, but it's amazing on my Window Mobile phone...syncs my RTM task list with WinMo's native task app (or any other PIM you use on the phone). definitely worth the $25, i think. the sheer number of ways to input & read task lists is amazing. - Trent Olson
thanks trent that's helpful :) - mike "glemak" dunn
I pretend to use the (still free) Sandy (http://www.iwantsandy.com) no native app, but the email and IM is so easy to use, I don 't mind it. - Paul Reynolds
this just in on Sandy: Twitter bought them today, and is shutting the service down: http://friendfeed.com/e/5485da... - Trent Olson
Ugh. That blows. So they just bought them out for the developer talent? - Paul Reynolds
Wow, I just signed up for Sandy thinking it would stick around and just get better...but who am I kidding? Very lame move on Twitter's part. I just don't get them. - Jared Smith
OK...that makes me cranky. I want Sandy was actually useful. - Ken Kennedy
This is exactly the kind of that that has flipped me to complete contempt for Twitter. They not only screw up their own service but reduce or eliminate the value of other ones. I personally root for the death of Twitter, the sooner the better. - Dave Slusher
Agreed, Dave. Buying a flat-out useful service just to shut it down...FAIL. - Ken Kennedy
Agree, but this is exactly what big companies have been doing for years. Oracle comes to mind. :) http://tinyurl.com/6jv8xr - Mark Hurley
Mark, and this is why we hate the big companies. Twitter just moved up in rank to the front line of hatred. Welcome to the NFL. - Dave Slusher
lol - like how this thread started as a simple request for feedback on an app and blossomed into a hating on twitter feast - of course that's as it should be since there is just so much to hate about twitter ;) - mike "glemak" dunn
I know it, mike. This is one of my favorite threads in quite a while! - Ken Kennedy
So the only real defense anyone has of Sandy shutting down is "hey, it was free so what do you expect." I think I'm coming to believe that paying something like $25 is worth it to buy the right to have umbrage if the service screws you. I'm with J Wynia. Paying for things or running them myself gets ever more attractive. - Dave Slusher
But they did rebuff Facebook, that should count for something. - Mathew A. Koeneker
