"In my opinion, the problems with tip culture on the web are many, not least the evidence that most of the page-view-obsessed poopers of online tips seem to have zero real interest in solving any problem beyond their own need to generate repeat traffic from dazed information tourists. But, the common problem of all tip fixations traces back to a misunderstanding of how anybody ever got great at doing anything." - Graham English

Sweet, that must mean that version 2.7 is imminent. - Mark Krynsky
Played around with 2.7 a bit on WP.com and really looking forward to the WP.org release. Nervous about upgrading though with all the plugins and all. - Graham English
They had a countdown to roll-out, too! Hey Robert. :) - Mona N.
I'm also really looking forward to the 2.7 release on WP.org. Ditto the concerns of Graham on upgrading though especially since the Podpress plugin already doesn't really support the current version. - Phill Ramey
I've been using 2.7 for a couple of weeks and haven't had any problems at all so far. - Matthew Bennett
wow. Just tried it too. Very impressive: I really like how you can customize things. Interesting to see the speed at which wordpress is mutating compared to blogger. "Okay, she's got talent. But the best thing to happen to soul music? Since the title is asking, I have to say no. And who gives a fuck about the trumpet player being a caterer? This is a manufactured story for a dynamically-deaf presentation of a talented but not legendary voice (who wouldn't be half as alluring without the cleavage laden video)." - Graham English

'Self-Embedding' a Troubling Trend Among Teens
11 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
Slated to report their findings Wednesday at the Radiological Society of North America's annual meeting in Chicago, doctors said that ultrasound and other minimally invasive imaging techniques can help guide the removal of these foreign objects from the wounds. This is one of the first-ever reports of self-embedding, the authors said. - Shevonne Polastre via Bookmarklet

Wow, crazy. - Jason Huebel
WTH? I do not understand why teens, or anyone, would do this. Guess I am too sheltered. - Robert Miller
Robert, self injury is a method to cope with overwhelming feelings, anxiety, depression. And, yes, from the outside it doesn't make any sense. - Anna Haro
Cutting the skin releases endorphins. It can create a 'high' - Glenn Slaven

@Jeff I can't imagine the non-tame ones - Shevonne Polastre
Jeff - That is a body modification and isn't what this article is referring to. The article refers to self-mutilation by sticking random object underneath the skin and letting them fester. What you've linked is a professionally done body modification silicone implant of a heart of a girl's chest. They are two very different things. Body modification doesn't mean you hate yourself or are acting out. - Mattie Kenny
Here's a more hardcore example (warning nudity) http://www.flickr.com/photos/p... - Jeff P. Henderson
AGAIN Jeff, that is NOT what is being talked about in this article. What you are linking to are body modifications that are not indicative of a self-mutilation disorder. - Mattie Kenny
I can't imagine doing it either way! - Jeff P. Henderson
Well, that's you. But linking to those photos and saying it is the terrible burgeoning disorder that this article refers to is bad for the body mod community and bad for you. - Mattie Kenny
I agree with Mattie. Body modification is not the same thing as the self-embedding referred to in the article. - Graham English
They really are not the same. I don't have a DSM-4 handy but am pretty certain of that. - Mathew A. Koeneker
As someone who has several body mods (not of that kind), I can sincerely say I have no self-mutilation tendencies and I don't hate my body in the slightest way. - Mattie Kenny
Not trying to dis the legitimate body mod community. It isn't clear from the article that there was a differentiation between what these kids are doing and the more professionally done body mods. In fact some of the tamer mods look kind of cool! It can definitely be art if done well. - Jeff P. Henderson
Jeff - "The objects removed included needles, staples, paper clips, glass, wood, plastic, graphite (pencil lead), crayon and stone." You think THAT is what people with professional body mods do? Furthermore, there is a big distinction, they get it done professionally and under sterile conditions. They don't jam shit under their skin. There shouldn't even be a comparison made. - Mattie Kenny
"Self-embedding, a disorder where people wound themselves and then place objects in the wound"..."Self-embedding disorder is typically done without suicidal intent. Objects are used to puncture the skin or are embedded into the wound after cutting." Sounds to me like the difference is the motivation for the action and not so much the end result. - Jeff P. Henderson
Yes. The end result is different. One is an artistic heart. The other is a six inch staple jammed into your skin that has to be surgically removed along with the scar tissue created and the festering puss. - Mattie Kenny
I think what you just said is an excellent definition of the difference between self mutilation and professional artistic body mods. The article should have been more explicit to the fact that the kids doing this to themselves are putting their health at risk due to the methods they are using. - Jeff P. Henderson
For those who is not intimate with the body mod community, which I would imagine is a large majority of the population, it is unclear what the differentiation is between self mutilation and professional body mods. It would have been helpful if the article had mentioned the professional art and stated the stark difference between the two activities. - Jeff P. Henderson
The article I had read about this three or four days ago actually did make that distinction, but most people just want to think of body modification as being gross and stupid anyway. I have to defend body modding quite often. It's ridiculous because I don't attack others for their lifestyle, artistic and self-expression choices. But that's tangential to the issue. The issue is body modification != self-mutilation/self-embedding disorder. - Mattie Kenny
I definitely have no problem with people doing body mods. The ones that are done in artistic manner are very cool and not gross in any way. I think the general public's opinion is swayed by the fact that most people only see photos of the more extreme body mods or disfiguring self mutilation because they are much more sensational than artistic mods. I'm kind of surprised that the article did not show some examples of the self mutilation that these kids were inflicting upon themselves. - Jeff P. Henderson

Call me a curmudgeon, but the first reaction I feel is one of shock -- at the extravagant waste involved in this. Yeah, Cheetos don't carry much in the way of nutritional value, but this is still someone throwing away a massive amount of calories as a "joke". Delight is a poor choice of words and hopefully not accurately reflecting your sentiment. But I also think that it misses the big picture. Having competition is good for the space. With less competition, Twitter et al have less incentive to develop and improve. - Graham English
that's a fair point Graham, i guess my point is really that i'm tired of '2nd rate twitter clones' appearing on the scene...and Pownce (although it started well) became that. Regarding Twitter, i'm just tired of being tired with the service...not sure how much competition a service like that needs before it realises it needs to step up its game - Zee.
I don't know if you're saying users shouldn't go to Twitter or just encouraging them to seek alternative networks... But I agree that it's good riddance to Pownce. - Voyagerfan5761 via fftogo
