@Robert. I agree with that, but the realtime stream is far too much to be filtered in any relevant way. FF is great if you use it right (like creating lists) but simply folliowing 4500 in realtime makes it worthless imo. - JonathanJoseph

Jonathan: there is a TON of filtering still to come to RealTime streams. For instance, I filter mine by making a list, which has its own RealTime stream (only 200 people, all hand selected, are on that). Also, in future you'll be able to filter by talking to the stream. For instance, say you have too much. What if you could say "please only show me items with likes." Still too much? "Show me only items with four likes and at least two comments." And there's lots more, too. - Robert Scoble

What if you could say "show me only items with 'Mumbai' in them?" Or, show me only items from people who Tim O'Reilly is also following? Or, what if you could say "show me only items from people located in India?" Can you start to see how your RealTime stream could be filtered? - Robert Scoble

All in all, I'd say Apple is better-positioned to weather this "storm" than Microsoft would be (not that *that's* the competition at hand): 1) they can probably react quicker to make the fixes necessary (Microsoft REALLY needs to overcome their "build lethargy" and be more nimble in that regard) and 2) the fanbase & the detractor base is much more forgiving of Apple-the-up-and-comer than they are of Microsoft-the-evil-behemoth. - Craig Eddy

It really wasn't so bad at all. The launch today was a bottleneck of too many people and: 1) not enough technology (the servers), and 2) knowledge (AT&T). I'm not sure that the slowdowns today qualify as either PR nightmares or disasters. For example, I think the price drop of iPhone 1.0 was a bigger PR problem than the signups being slow. Some things just end up taking time, particularly when they are new and there is a high demand for them. I wonder if some of the language here is influenced by tech myopia. In other words, I wonder if most people will just see that the process is slow and come back later. Who is going to forego buying an iPhone because of this? I was there at the Apple store in downtown SF at 6am, for my first iPhone, finally walking out of the store at 12:30 after some activation trouble. Took a lot longer than expected but you could tell this one was out of the hands of the store employees, who I felt did a very good job considering the circumstances. .... because there's gold gonna be raining down and money to be made. I have literally seen 7 tip calculators, about 10 to-do lists and all of them look like they're cut from the same Cocoa template mold that came with xcode, and just now I saw a time billing app that sells for $80. It has about 14 settings. There's a light version that will only handle 50 projects, it's $30. And one that really took the cake is the "Light". A single white screen that the author is charging a dollar for! This stuff is an insult and makes me feel like the app store is some type of 3rd world street bazar market - Adam Turetzky

Adam, I am ADC select. I've never seen anything regarding being able to put apps on the iPhone though, and I don't think I ever got a reply after signing up for the iPhone developer program, but I can't be sure. - Chris White

I haven't downloaded Enigmo, but I bought Monkey Ball and it's challenging and cute. It's a good diversion but it's very one-dimensional (try to keep the monkey from falling off the platform while collecting bananas). This is essentially a demo of how to use the accelerometers in the iPhone. - Eric Thompson
