“My boss just discovered TED and asked if there is anything like it in the library world. Gave a qualified "yes and no." Thoughts?”
18 hours ago - Link
First, happy birthday. Second, what was the "yes" part of your answer? Third, should we create a library TED? - Qui-Gon Binks Lawson
thanks! i'm not as familiar with TED as I should be, so the "yes" part was that we have pockets of this sort of thing happening in the library/info world (educause? webjunction? lita? code4lib?), but the "no" part was that we don't have the star-power or organization that a TED has. Third -- YES! - Jason Kucsma
OK. Let's do it. TED library-style in 2010. - Qui-Gon Binks Lawson
So we ask all of the "brightest people" in librarianship to pay top dollar to assemble and listen to each other give inspiring presentations? I'll need some convincing. Anyway, the real magic of TED is in its interdisciplinary nature. I'm not sure that bringing together the various areas of librarianship would be nearly as powerful for all involved. Maybe I'm wrong. But you can be sure that an invite-only event in insecurity-driven library land would go over well. - Greg Schwartz
Good points, Greg. What if we brought in people on the fringes of libraries? I'd love to hear Aaron Swartz, Brewster Kahle, Rick and Meg Prelinger and others talk. And even if we had to pay most of the speakers, I doubt they would command the kind of money that, say, Al Gore does. - Qui-Gon Binks Lawson
i've thought it would be cool to send a librarian to speak at TED. Who would it be? (assuming all we had to do was nominate them, that is) - Stephanie__=^-^=
I agree with most of your points, Greg, but I'll note that bringing together the folks behind the best projects in gaming in libraries at an interdisciplinary conference (the Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium) has been a huge success. Participants often note in the evaluations that they appreciate that aspect of it. - Jenny Levine
One of the things that I've liked about recent Digital Library Federation Forums (yes, I know, it's limited in terms of who can go) is that Peter Brantley has brought on some great people at the edges: Creative Commons folks, Prelinger, Joel Selanikio of DataDyne (who if you ever get a chance to hear, definitely go!) and others. It's been great to have that mix of library / non-library but in the library space folks. - Sarah
I would really like a library-flavored TED-type event. Even as a track or day at another conference, the idea of bringing together big thinkers dealing with new ideas who can present really well is exciting. Could be fun... - lauren pressley via twhirl

“Just got CIL 09 program. Am I the only one who finds it disturbing that someone from PBWiki is giving the preconference on library wikis? I KNOW I'm not the only librarian who knows something about wikis and getting a vendor to do it is just YUCK.”
December 23 at 6:49 am - Link
Seems like CiL wouldn't have to look very hard to find an expert from among library staff who could present on that topic. Kinda lame. - Stephen (a) Francoeur
Yeah, seriously. I can think of a bunch of people who'd do a terrific job. My favorite part of the "abstract" is "take home advanced tips and tricks to supercharge the wiki along with a gift from PBWiki." So lame. - Meredith Farkas
I'd agree with you Meredith. There are several people I can think of without any effort. And I don't find PBWiki to always be the best answer in terms of library wikis anyway. That said, they do employee a librarian (or so they say), so maybe this is the person who will be providing the preconference. Regardless, I think it's bad form. - Silly Jilly
I've always tried hard to be extremely product-agnostic when I talk about wikis, even though I do have my faves (and PBWiki hasn't been one of them since they moved to their awful 2.0 platform). I wonder if someone from PBWiki will talk about MediaWiki, Twiki, WetPaint, etc. Different products work well for different settings. - Meredith Farkas
Agreed. Lame. - Qui-Gon Binks Lawson
It would be interesting to know how CIL and IL selects speakers, etc., so we'd understand these types of decisions and also be able to pitch our ideas better. - Jill Hurst-Wahl
It's simple economics, folks. PBWiki is paying its speaker's way. If a libn did it, ITI would have to pay. - D0r0th34
I would bet that they pitched the idea to Jane and she went for it because no one else offered and she didn't feel like looking for someone else to do it. PBWiki has pitched all sorts of stuff to me with my class, my column, and my talks (asking me to talk them up and offering swag). No thanks. - Meredith Farkas
I agree with you Dorothea, but ITI could probably get some 10 -15 library staff members already coming to the conference to do this workshop or at least balance it out with a librarianesque presence or two to discuss practical applications of wikis in libraries. Seems very limiting and short sighted to not include that perspective at at library conference. - ♫letmygeekoutin2009♫
I don't approve of ITI's behavior, I should have made clear. I just figure that's why they did it. Meredith's probably right, too -- squeaky wheel gets grease. - D0r0th34
Several huge names (not regularly on the ITI conference circuit) were called in this year. Look closer. ITI is stepping its game up significantly. - Julian
(I apologize for my horrible performance eight months ago possibly ruined it for the rest of us.) - Julian
Julian, I don't think Jane chose to use someone from PBWiki OVER a librarian. Do we know of anyone who actually asked her about doing a wiki preconf? I'll be days away from having my baby, so CIL was not in the cards for me. - Meredith Farkas
Meredith: On the topic of the use of wikis in libraries, there's no question that you are the person in the highest demand. If they can't get you, they likely won't want "just another librarian," even someone else who is available and at least equally competent on the topic. (Sorry if that offended people.) Making a splash on the program increases registration, especially from those for whom the concepts being presented are not old hat. Ultimately makes more $$$, too. - Julian
Yeah, they really stepped up their game by getting Dorothea on the program! - Qui-Gon Binks Lawson
I guess that "celebrity factor" is what's starting to get to me about Info Today conferences. Chad Boeninger knows as much about wikis as I do and yet he doesn't get asked to do it because he's not the "Queen of Wikis"? I know the celebrity factor is what gets people to come to the conf (and I have a lot of fun seeing friends), but there's something I find icky about it at the same time. - Meredith Farkas
Meredith, that's true. It's interesting how the "celebrity" factor works on presenters, too. The main reason I wanted to go to CIL is that I somehow ended up on a panel with John Blyberg, Stephen Francoeur, and Kathryn Greenhill, all of whom I would like to know better and whose auras I would like to briefly bask in. - Qui-Gon Binks Lawson
*snerk*, Lawson. Meredith, yes, ITI is a big factor in "them that has, gets." I dunno, it doesn't seem like it's *always* been that way -- after all, they kinda discovered you, didn't they? - D0r0th34
I agree, it is icky, Meredith. Probably somewhat inevitable, though. - joshua m. neff
Also, I've already been seeing librarians complain that conference trips that were once funded are not being funded now. I know that there's no guarantee at MPOW that I'll get approved to go to a conference (with MPOW paying the way). If companies can afford to send their employees, like Dorothea's saying, I think we'll be seeing more companies presenting at big conferences instead of library professionals. - joshua m. neff
Good point, Josh, that wouldn't surprise me either. I sort of feel like my baby-having timing couldn't be better with travel budgets being slashed. - Meredith Farkas
I'm willing to dub Chad the Queen of Wikis. I think he'd enjoy that, don't you? - Greg Schwartz
Oh yeah, he'd love it, Greg. ;) And I wouldn't mind giving up my crown. I can't even remember who gave me that moniker, but it sure has stuck. One of the web developers at Norwich Googled me once and now calls me the Queen of Wikis every time I see him. Sigh... - Meredith Farkas
Contrary to what Mr. Lawson said, I don't have an aura; I have a vortex. - Stephen (a) Francoeur
If CIL were located anywhere but here, I likely wouldn't be attending every year. Will have to check to see how many locals are on the program for 2009... - Julian
Yeah, a Google search on "queen of wikis" is telling, isn't it? http://www.google.com/search?r..."queen+of+wikis" - Greg Schwartz
Josh has a good point. The only conference I hope to attend next year is more and more likely going to be self-funded if I go at all, so I haven't put in paper proposals anywhere. Vendors have always been a part of many library conferences, appearing on panels and what not, this is just taking that a bit further. Yuck, yes, inevitable, sadly yes. - Fiona Bradley

A Day in the Life. You work in a small municipal library, where you have to do a little of everything. You start your day by leafing through catalogs from online database publishers and book reviews in Library Journal to decide which titles to add to your collection. Next, it's out to the reference desk, where visitors regularly ask how to find something. Sometimes, it's esoteric; often, it's the bathroom. Later, you teach a class: an advanced lesson in Googling. Next, it's back to the reference desk, but you're soon interrupted by a group of boisterous kids, so you have to turn into schoolmarm: "You'll have to be quiet, or I'll have to ask you to leave." You end your day reading about "automated librarianship": data storage systems that let the public get needed resources without the help of a live librarian. Tomorrow, you decide, you'll start writing a grant proposal to develop a computer kiosk that will help patrons find health information. - Greg Schwartz

“has anyone centralized their virtual reference services (email, im/chat, phone, etc)? if so, how have you set it up?”
December 10 at 3:06 pm - Link
I guess you'd call us centralized. We have a separate off-floor service point that is staffed like a call center and handles all the incoming calls. The people who work there the majority of their time (there are rotating phone-answerers from other departments as well) handle email reference and IM. What else do you want to know? I used to supervise this area, so I'm pretty familiar with it. - Greg Schwartz
thanks greg! sounds like what we're working towards. i'll be in touch with some more detailed questions as we go along, if that's ok - krista godfrey
Our telephone reference dept at our main library does ours. - Lori Reed
I've never worked at a place where those services were de-centralized.....always, the person/people at the RefDesk took all comers, in the order they arrived. Current POW shares IM across multiple service points - RudĩϐЯaЯïaȵ
we have something set up using our jabber server, so the kids at the main Q desk (they no longer call it reference, but it is, kind of) IM us when they need a librarian -- when the desk isn't staffed with a librarian that is. I can answer some of the librarian questions for you if you like, and put you in touch with the tech brains behind it too if that's helpful. cogscilibrarian AT gmail. - Stephanie__=^-^=
right now calls & emails go to specific libraries. looking at maybe one central number to farm out calls, and 1 person to do emails and ims and then redirect as necessary - krista godfrey
