The Death of Public Relations. Will social media kill the beast?
4 hours ago - 123socialmedia.com - Link
"Everyone is buzzing about social media, some of us are blazing into new territory while others are simply exploding in frustration. Will social media be the spark that changes how communication occurs? Are the spectators in the crowd cheering in applause or screaming in unknowing terror? We can only sharpen our intellect and maneuver a realm of uncharted territory. The simple truth of the matter is that no one knows. The numbers shed some dim light on the traditional communications model. Just remember: numbers only define one aspect of the way the communication landscape is evolving." - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet
yes, of course, marketing too - postlinearity
Yes. - Meryn Stol
or is it really just the same old communications, only in electronic, mini-bite form? A lot of twitter chatter is the same stuff I used to see floating through my email systems 8 or 9 years ago, only it is public now. - alphaxion
Think so too. Social Media just has to become more popular. Many things like Twitter are still seen as geek tools. - Denis Eggert via twhirl

Logical Extremes: Privacy is only dead for those who choose to have none
2 hours ago - logicalextremes.blogspot.com - Link
"...The concept of forced full transparency uproots more than two centuries of constitutionally- and otherwise legally-protected rights in the US, and similar (and sometimes greater) protections in many other democratic countries. My personal belief is that it also goes against many elements of human nature, and even in the most "utopian" of societies where everyone would have equal rights and equal technology (worldwide), it wouldn't be desirable. Most definitions of privacy are vastly oversimplified. Privacy is complex, and contextual. Privacy is not the same as secrecy (and it's not mutually exclusive with security)....I've observed that most of the people who espouse the "privacy is dead" mantra have products or services that benefit more from less privacy. I am not about to yield basic human rights for commercial gain (or "security theater" for that matter). If someone wants to live transparently, that's an individual choice rather a unilateral edict to the rest of society." - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet

A New Card Being Developed Will Be Used For Public Goods, Services - cbs11tv.com

"One little card will soon make your life a whole lot easier. The revolutionary idea has taken root in Dallas. But from Denton to Weatherford, Frisco to Waxahachie, Fort Worth to Rockwall, residents could have their own easy button in the form of a new credit card. It would be the first of its kind anywhere and could be used at any participating city and transit agency in North Texas. It's called the Rapid Card and it's being developed by the City of Dallas, DART and the NTTA. It's a universal payment card that can be used in all participating cities, counties and transit agencies in the 12 counties in North Texas. It could be used at a parking meter or at a public garage, when taking a bus or rail, and even when paying trash and water fees. It can also be used at a city recreation center or to pay for overdue library books. The card would work like an existing toll tag and be linked to your credit card." - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet

5 Meta Trends Shaping 2009 Social Media Predictions | ChrisKenton.com
4 hours ago - chriskenton.com - Link
"1. The Growth Curve: Size Does Matter One of the biggest drivers behind behavior on social networks today is the imperative to generate quantity of connections over and above quality of relationships. Many people are focusing on activities that help drive up friends and followers, and while there’s some hand wringing among pundits about this emphasis on size over quality, I think we’re just seeing an important early stage of the social media phenomenon in which growth is critical to unlock the value of the network. There are real social and systemic drivers behind this growth-oriented behavior. From a social standpoint, perception matters, and size is one of the easiest metrics for judging social standing. How many connections on LinkedIn do you need to be taken seriously as a job candidate? How many followers on Twitter do you need to be considered cool or influential? These are compelling social imperatives, however shallow we may think they are. Now it’s true that the number of followers or friends " - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet

"20. RETURN TO THE KITCHEN (Economy / Family / Food) - Fuelled by the credit crunch and food as a fashionable hobby, we’ll see a return to the kitchen, especially for the celebrated meals. -> Maybe the other point to discuss is: what kind of food will be brought to kitchen? There are already big trends in Europe proving that more and more people with higher purchase power are in favor of healthier/ organic food @ home 19. DIY & THE RISE OF THE COTTAGE INDUSTRY (Economy) – Internet communities like Etsy and Craftster were already sparking interest in DIY projects, fashion and crafts. A troubled job market and the need for extra cash will spark many hobbiests to transition their love for craft into cottage industry. -> Probably true: nonetheless, except some rare big buzz around talents, it's highly complicated to earn enough cash compared to the time you spend. The DIY is first a pleasure stuff 15. GEEK PRIDE a geek is less and less a UFO-like and more and more a guy or girl we trust. " - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet

Mac Tip: Hide Holiday Music With Automator « The Paperweight

"Now that the holidays are over, most of us are ready to be done with holiday music for a while. The problem is that sometimes our digital music collections have a mind of their own and start playing holiday music even in the middle of July. CNET’s Donald Bell suggests several ways to make sure you don’t have this problem, including storing all of your holiday music on a special flash drive. But if you don’t want to go to all the trouble and expense of his methods, there is a simpler way for those of you who use iTunes on a Mac. It’s easy to setup, doesn’t require any additional materials or software, and works year after year without any user intervention." - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet
How One Post Quintupled My Blog Visitors — AriWriter

"Do you want to guess what caused the mountain? On December 21, I wrote an article about a series of Facebook phishing scams, that at the time, had zero online references. My post now has 69 comments, with new ones appearing every other day. While you spend an average 60 seconds reading my blog content (typically because you read one post and rarely click into multiple posts), every visitor to the Facebook scam page spent three minutes reading! Like the cycle of news, blog content comes and goes. But if you write something at the right time, visitors will come. You don’t have to be an A-list blogger; you can be anyone. Just write it and capture the noise. Provide possible solutions. Offer a way for people to ask questions, whether by blog comment, email, or Facebook message (and I received all three). "1. They’re Growing Like Crazy Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this morning that Facebook now has 150 million active users (unique users who logged in over the past month), half of which use the site daily. Facebook has added about 10 million users over the past 3 weeks, which suggests that at their current growth rate the site would double its active user base to 300 million by year end. What’s more impressive than their incredible growth, which Zuckerberg says would make Facebook the eighth most populated country in the world, is that the growth is happening everywhere — across 170 countries and in every age group. Using AllFacebook’s Demographic Statistics tool, it’s easy to see where growth is happening on Facebook. I randomly jumped around from country to country, male to female, and across different age groups and couldn’t many that didn’t see user growth over the past month. Spanish males aged 60-65? Growing. Australian females ages 26-34? Growing. Mexican 18-25 year olds? Growing. American" - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet

Any suggestions on mice? I'm tired of them hanging up on me. - Internet Strategist
get 4gb ram, and make sure hard drive speed is 10,000 RPM...i would custom build (that is how i make PCs)...or get an alienware system. processor speed is nice but lots of ram and a quick hard drive are key bottlenecks...processors can handle more than you reailze. get a quad core intel, they are a beast.... - Adam Singer
I'd say amount of memory>network interface>CPU>hard drive speed>graphic card - Alex Scoble
Internet performance? Depends on what you mean by that, but I'd second Alex, Memory then CPU are your two big winners. Then disk, followed *maybe* by graphics card. Unless you've got some uber-pipe to the internet, the network interface won't make *that* much difference (unless it's a real stinker). Again, I'm not sure what you mean by internet performance (since almost any machine now a-days will give you adequate browser/email perf). - mikepk
Adam, that PC comes with a choice of three quad core intel processors: Quad Core Q6600 2.40 GHz FSB 1066 MHz L2 8 MB Quad Core Q9300 2.50 GHz FSB 1333 MHz L2 6 MB ( +$99.00 ) Quad Core Q9550 2.83 GHz FSB 1333 MHz L2 12 MB ( +$195.00 ) Would you spend the money on the upgraded speed? - Internet Strategist
hmm... i'm also assuming this is a home PC - mikepk
I work online and want to increase productivity by eliminating wait time as much as possible. I suspect that will take using at least three PCs so that I can work on them sequentially when what I've submitted is loading. - Internet Strategist
You need alot more RAM. 2Gb Min 1Proc 2HD 3RAM - tsudohnimh
@tsudohnimh A lot more than what? Options are 2 GB - 2 x 1 GB - DDR 2 - 800 MHz 4 GB - 2 x 2 GB - DDR 2 - 800 MHz ( +$40.00 ) 8 GB - 4 x 2 GB - DDR 2 - 800 MHz ( +$100.00 ) - Internet Strategist
Try this ASUS http://tr.im/3524 and add 2.4Ghz Phenom CPU and 4Gb Crucial RAM, then add a West Digi SATA HD 7200RPM 1TB size all for $754 - tsudohnimh
would depend on the kind of application you are doing - graphics? video? data? writing? games? RAM first, but no more than 4Gb. Then it could be a tie between the other 3, depending on application. For work/graphics/video I'd probably go drive then cpu, for games gpu and cpu - Joelle Nebbe
more than the default. get at least 2Gb. 4 if you can get it. - tsudohnimh
I'm a little late here, but RAM, RAM, and RAM, in that order. RAM covers up a lot of other deficiencies. - Kenton
agree w/ Kenton except for RAM doesn't make up for underpowered CPU's - tsudohnimh
They're right about Internet usage, it's RAM+CPU+HDD Speed and maybe graphics card in the future. The system you've linked to I think is overpriced by about $200-400 (not including warranty pricing). - xero
Agreed @tsudohnimh, my order would be RAM, CPU, HDD, Video, flashy lights and things... And really, if we're talking Internet performance only, none of it matters, your Internet connection is always going to be the bottleneck (unless you have FiOS or something but even then it'll likely be the slowest part). - Kenton
When I said network interface I meant of course internet pipe + network card...and I'd severely disagree on any modern computer being up to the task of browsing the internet. If you mess with a lot of flash and java apps at once (like a heavy Facebook user would) it can literally bring a computer to its knees. - Alex Scoble
I agree with @xero the orig system you linked to seems high to me. Hence I intro'd mwave. I get all my PC's there. ASUS and AMD FTW! - tsudohnimh
@growmap 1. CPU 2. Memory 3. Video 4. HD. - Czar
Yeah, mwave is good, but so is Newegg...I'd check between them to see which has better aggregate price for you. Also check Amazon, particularly if you are a Prime member. - Alex Scoble
What I do: Blogging on WP, micro-blogging primarily on FriendFeed & Twitter, accessing Google Analtyics (until I can talk some other company into replacing it). No games, no graphics. Pro HughesNet satellite connection. - Internet Strategist
i could hand build you a faster PC cheaper Internet Strategist...shame you don't live closer, i'd show you how to do it - it is easy...if you want, email me a link to where you want to buy a system from and i'll custom config it for you. the thing is you won't get as good a deal as you would if you order parts from new egg and build it yourself. it's actually a lot of fun and quite the adventure, no advanced skills needed to build a PC if you get compatible parts, you can do it successfully the first time - Adam Singer
If that's all you do then you certainly have no need for a quad-core...Find something with a dual-core and buy as much memory as you can get. - Alex Scoble
IMHO Microsoft subsidizes the cost of PCs to get their O/S on them so if you want something else you have to expect to pay a little more. Since I'm not a true geek I value having turn-key Ubuntu installed and tested. - Internet Strategist
for what you do: buy good memory, as much as you can buy and your OS can support. 2 nice fast disks so you have data security + an external backup drive (ideally a NAS you can have hidden). Any mainstream CPU will do, I tend to choose looking at power consumption (lower means cheaper and quieter). Pay for some good silent cooling - go as fanless as you can, and choose a good quiet case, I find it really helps my thinking (could suggest brands) - Joelle Nebbe
from 2GB to 8GB for only $100? that's a must buy, I don't care what anyone else says about anything else, RAM is the thing that will keep your machine usable long into the future. My current machine has 4GB, my previous machine had 4GB when I purchased it in 2001 and I only replaced it mid-2006 because I wanted legit OSX :) the more you can get, the better. - Michael J. Cohen (mjc)
previous machine is still perfectly usable and I continue to use it every day! - Michael J. Cohen (mjc)
Ubuntu = free, 4GB of RAM = ~$50, 1TB 7200RPM HDD = ~$85, C2D e7200 CPU+MoBo combo = ~$180, Radeon HD 3650 = ~$60, good case = ~$90, 500W PSU = ~$90. Fans, cables, etc. = ~$30. That would be a good computer for you for under $600 provided you build it yourself and are fine with individual manufacturers' warranties. http://www.pricewatch.com and http://www.newegg.com and http://www.tigerdirect.com - xero
In order: memory, graphics, processor, drive. (that is for Internet browsing use); and depends on monitor size & internet bandwidth. - clarke thomas
Just to clear something up, I'm not sure what browser some of these people are using, but your video card currently has nothing to do with your internet browsing capabilities. AFAIK all of the browsers still render the pages to the screen using the CPU and not the video card. One exception might be browsers in Vista since they offloaded some of the root GDI stuff to the video card when possible. - xero
Thanks for all the awesome input. LOL - Building the hardware is a piece of cake - it is the rest that can eat your lunch. I wouldn't bet that I don't need a quad-core. The first few days I had HughesNet I hit the FAP limit without downloading anything or watching any videos. When I'm researching I might have over a dozen windows open at once. Filling up memory is definitely an issue. - Internet Strategist
Don't forget a 64-bit OS otherwise you'll be stuck with 3-ish GB of RAM. - Kenton
2, 1, 4, 3, and good M/B that will take complete advantage of the full capabilities of the above - Shey
I don't know what the causes are of the issues that reduce performance. Had to copy that last comment, reload the page, then paste and re-submit because it hung with a clock. Some issues are satellite Internet connection related. - Internet Strategist
The last four or five PCs I've had were white boxes (built by friends who build their own all the time). I thought I might get a name brand for a change and see if it runs better. The one I'm using now is Intel Celeron 1.70 Ghz with 502.0 MiB memory. Has two memory sticks and one more slot so I might bump memory and see if that helps. - Internet Strategist
Satellite internet is fairly unique. You want to minimize your connections/reconnections. It takes a long time to establish a connection with one, but once you do the download/upload speeds are tremendous. - xero
You can't really call the way I use a PC "browsing" the Internet. Having three inexpensive PCs like the one I have now and keeping each logged into half a dozen sites and into a WordPress dashboard so I can move sequentially through them to increase productivity might work better than a super-powerful PC. What do you think? - Internet Strategist
@growmap "Intel Celeron 1.70 Ghz"?! IMHO, you should *not* spend anymore money on that machine (and avoid Celeron CPUs.) - Czar
I know that - had a friend throw it together when my other PC fried. Only charged me $75 for it to use temporarily. - Internet Strategist
With Chrome, I'm able to keep 22 tabs open with no adverse effects on speed. This is on a dual-core Intel laptop with 2gb or RAM. - Alex Scoble
Based on what you've described, a quad-core, >4GB RAM, and 2-3 monitors should work best for you. Hard drive(s) should be at least 7200rpm and springing for the 16MB or greater cache on them would be worth it. - xero
Add 8 GB of memory to that Wild Dog Performance (or similar) computer, together with 500 GB SATA II 300 Mbps - 7200 RPM 32MB Buffer ( +$80.00 ), better graphics card that supports multible displays like 512 MB ATI Radeon 4830 PCI-Express x16 GDDR3 (2 x DVI, S-Video, DVI to HDMI, DVI to VGA) ( +$90.00 ) and consider of starting to use Opera instead of Firefox to make better use of hardware resources. - Daniel Schildt
@xero What do you use (hardware / software) to connect the three monitors. The main reason I'm leaning toward multiple separate PCs is that I haven't found a utility that would allow me to easily switch between accounts at FF, twitter, WP, etc. and logging in and out is a major productivity hit - major waste of time. - Internet Strategist
I need to be able to FAVE threads like this. I might build a new box in a month or so and wading through likes would take like ... forever. Right now, I store links to FAVE threads on my augmented-brain-management wiki. :-) - michael silverton
It might be good thing to buy larger hard drive but consider that cost of those is probably going down so don't get too expensive disk. Compare cost of HD's by calculating how much each gigabyte will cost. Remember that RPM speed and amount of buffer memory can make huge difference. Using disk with 10.000 RPM could make your computer work much faster but it's still much less than what adding memory from 2-->8GB make to use of computer. - Daniel Schildt
I think that is what del.icio.us was good for but now I use Tomboy Notes. Without a keyword searchable solution I'd be lost. Oh, that reminds me that using the search function here is probably the best way to find this thread again. - Internet Strategist
I recommend that you get computer with two graphics cards (both with 2 DVI outputs) so you could have 4 flat displays in one computer. Just remember that display drivers (or kernel modules) need to support your graphics card well enough to work with several cards. Linux certainly supports multible monitors but not so many people use it with more than two displays. - Daniel Schildt
@michael: Hit More > Link to this entry then save it on delicious or as a normal bookmark - xero
Daniel, I like your idea but it can only work IF I can find a way to switch between personas on Social Networking sites and between log-ins on WP blogs. Any suggestions? - Internet Strategist
Still… you could benefict from having more than one computer if one of those is laptop since that will allow you to move from place to another much more easily and continue your work at different places. With remote connections (over WLAN or even via Internet), you could also use programs running on your main desktop (that has more processing power). - Daniel Schildt
It's also possible to have virtual installations of operating system so if you need some Windows software (or might want to use some other Linux distribution) you could do so without causing harm to main system. - Daniel Schildt
With the five main browsers on the market, you can open one of each for the logins and personas on each site and still use one PC, or you could use virtualization for each. There's probably a Firefox plugin that locks cookies directly to a browser window (there should be if there isn't...). - xero
@Internet Strategist, there is some software that allow you to do so. I haven't have that much of need for it frequently but one approach would be to use virtual installations of Ubuntu running inside virtual machine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V... like Xen or VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org etc. - Daniel Schildt
It might cause somewhat more work, but after setting things up there is good side that if some software messes things up inside virtual machine, you can just take backup copy of disk image file and restart from fresh working system (without rebooting your host computer). - Daniel Schildt
Still, it might be good thing to have two computers because one would act as backup if other would fail. That's probably one of the best reasons to have several computers. - Daniel Schildt
Also, make backup plans to make sure you get your data to several safe locations (preferably one to different physical location than were computers reside). That to make sure you don't lose your data in case of theft or accident. - Daniel Schildt
Can all those browsers use Share on FriendFeed? Do virtual installations make more sense than an app that manages personas? Surely someone could create that and I guarantee they could sell it. I'll promote it no charge. - Internet Strategist

"Has your service provider complained you are using too many server resources? This could happen because you have a really popular blog or blogs (like Tricia) or it could happen if you have installed a poorly written plugin that’s a real CPU hog or it could be a combination of both! Regardless of the reason, you can continue to run your blog by paying more for a dedicated server, but that costs big money. If all your plugins are reasonable efficient and provide essential services, then spending for a dedicated server is well worth the money. But how can you make a lot of money if you waste money paying for a dedicated server just to run a CPU hogging plugin? Unfortunately, it’s difficult to identify which of the zillions of plugins you use is the hog. Bloggers randomly turn things on and off hoping to find the problem. Now “PluginHogDetector” will at least help you identify the problem." - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet

We run fairly streamlined Wordpress installs at Foliovision with about 30 active plugins per site. A lot of them are one-trick ponies developed in-house so we know the code isn't creating a huge load. But anyone who has been working on Macintosh computers from the old days (System 7, 8 & 9) knows very well that every extensions (and some people were running 50 of them) slows down your compuer and increases the chances of a system conflict. There were whole expensive utilities devoted to keeping extensions and control panels under control. If you don’t use ‘DoFollow’ Plugin then search engines will ignore those links. When submitting comments to these blogs please write some relevant and useful content. Don’t Spam! If you submit just one comment to all of them then it gives you more than 250 back links to your Website/Blog. And these 250 back links alone can get you a PR of 1 assuming you have quality search engine friendly articles." - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet

"I’m just one example: I grew Zen Habits into a Top 100 blog within its first year even though I was working a full-time job and doing free-lance writing on the side — giving me only about an hour a day to work on my blog, total. I probably could have spent more time blogging by working in the evenings or on weekends, but I have a family that’s more important to me than blogging. So how did I grow Zen Habits so quickly on so little time? Well, I figured out through experimentation what grows a blog the quickest, and I learned to focus my time on those things. And guess what? Checking your blog stats and earnings — even though it’s the thing than many bloggers do most throughout the day — doesn’t really grow your blog, at all. What does? More on that below." - Internet Strategist via Bookmarklet
