Neat! One photo says "The bubbles always seem to freeze from the top down. I think this is because the sky radiates a lot less heat than even frozen grass." I think it may actually have more to do with the fact that soap bubbles are thinner at the top than at the bottom. - Laurence Gonsalves

“What's the youngest you'd feel safe flying with a baby?”
January 1 at 7:52 pm - Link
1 month? 2 months? - Gabe
It looks like Gabe's sister might be getting married in California this May or June. Our baby is due in April. We're contemplating whether to leave her with my parents or take her on a the plane with us. - Maggie
Depends on you guys. I'm sure Baby April would sleep through the flight. If anything, the first 3 months just might be the best age range to travel. ;) - April Buchheit
I would take my son if I went somewhere that early, but April has more experience than me. If you are planning to nurse, it seems like the separation could throw your milk production out of wack (both uncomfortable while there and lower when you get back... - Clare Dibble
Thanks! I hadn't thought of either of those things. It looks like baby's first trip on an airplane will be this spring. - Maggie
Depends: how many hours has the baby logged to get his or her pilot's license? - Jeff Eddings
Jeff, I said "flying with a baby", not "with a baby flying"! :) - Gabe
Milan is 15 months and has been to Europe three times with no problems yet. I would say two months is perfect to fly. - Robert Scoble
As a non-baby owner, what is the potential risk? The pressurized cabin? Loud noises? - Mark Trapp
Mark: Assuming that flying is just as stressful for babies as for adults, and knowing that stress weakens the immune system, it is possible that the a cross-country flight may make a baby sick. I'm not worried that my child will be injured, I just don't want to spend the vacation carring for a sick baby. - Gabe

Looking for perspective on this argument from parents who have recent experience with diaper changing. - Maggie
I say disposable and Rob says cloth, but we will get back to you when we have some experience with an actual baby. - Clare Dibble
I've heard that you get more leaks with cloth - but babies with cloth diapers are more likely to be potty trained earlier. - Maggie
I think parents just get sick of dealing with cloth diapers, so they make their kids learn to use a toilet. - Clare Dibble
Gabe is pushing cloth - his argument is that he doesn't want to have to carry out a trash bag of stinky disposable diapers once a week. My thought on that is: don't we still have to take a bag of diapers out for the diaper service once a week? What's the difference? - Maggie
Cloth has gotten a lot better in the last 30 years. But commiting to a service is very all or nothing. Is your kid going to be in daycare at all? Because if she is, many do not accept cloth diapers. - Clare Dibble
You can contain the disposable diaper smell with a Diaper Genie: http://www.playtexbaby.com/Pro... . - Gary Burd
Trash has to be carried 50 feet down a steep hill for the garbage man to pick up. I'm assuming that since the diaper man will have to bring fresh diapers, he will deliver them to my front porch, then take the dirty diapers with him -- much like the UPS man. - Gabe
@Gary - Clare and I prefer the Diaper Champ - it takes regular garbage bags, instead of super expensive inserts, and it features one-handed operation. We'll probably get one for either disposable or cloth. My plan with cloth is to wash them myself though, since we have a nice, super-efficient, steam-cleaning washer (and I'm cheap) http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Tre... - Robert Felty
If we were to go with cloth - I would rather buy the ones by 'Bum Genius' than use the diaper service ones that are the exact same type my parents used for me. Gone is the need for plastic pants. http://www.amazon.com/bumGeniu... - Maggie
It looks like the advantage of the Diaper Genie is that the bag has special odor-absorbant properties. - Gabe
I have a Diaper Champ and have used it for a little while with Camilla and never with Thomas. I, too, saw the advantage of the Diaper Champ needing only garbage bags versus the Diaper Genie which requires special Diaper Genie bags, but after a little while, the Diaper Champ got very stinky and required frequent cleaning. What I do now is just toss the diapers in a brown paper bag in the garage and take it out with the trash at the end of the week. As for our Diaper Champ, it's sitting in the garage unused. - April Buchheit
As for my two cents on cloth vs. disposable. Personally, I'm intimidated by cloth especially in having to deal with fecal matter. I figured with the resources being used up in either hand-washing (using lots of water and detergent) or a diaper service where someone is using fossil fuels to drive a vehicle to pick up dirty diapers and deliver clean ones is comparable to using disposable. - April Buchheit
I feel less guilty using seemingly Earth-friendly disposables such Seventh Generation. - April Buchheit
Diaper Genie inserts last for weeks. Odors are contained well. - Bruce Lewis
April: The disposable diapers have to be delivered to you (possibly by the UPS truck or your minivan) and taken away (by the garbage man). The diaper service picks up and drops off at the same time, so it shouldn't be using more fossil fuels. - Gabe
Gabe, the garbage man and minivan were coming to our house anyway, so the addition of some diapers is negligible. Disposables are definitely the way to go, especially if you ever plan to leave the house. (do you really want to take dirty diapers home with you?) - Paul Buchheit
cloth diapers last longer, they are re-usable - even after you don't need them as diapers. you can wash & driy them yourself using enviro-friendly means. they cost less than disposables. they feel better, are less likely to cause rashes when properly changed. - MikeAmundsen
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/t... no need to feel guilty about disposables according to this study... - Trish Haley
Paul, I think this is a trivial argument. It's not like diaper service truck is going to make a special trip just for you any more than a UPS truck would if you ordered disposables online. And I would expect that any time the baby goes outside the house, she would be in disposable diapers. - Gabe
Clare read in the book "Rubbish: the archeology of garbage" that, unlike popular belief, diapers make up less than 5% of landfill volume. However, I still like the idea of reusing. If you have multiple kids, it would be possible to reuse the same diapers with all of them. But it really only makes sense if one person is staying home with the kid, and you need some disposables for when out and about. - Robert Felty
I should point out that my reasons aren't environmental. I just want diapers to automatically show up and dirty ones carted away without me having to do anything. Because I'm lazy like that. - Gabe
