"Awesome" seems to be a standard Sales response. Part of the upbeat mentality that's required in the job, no doubt. - Andrei M. Marinescu

"Remember last week's Obama in-game ads? Well now it's McKillaCain's turn, and he's gone with a different approach. Namely using old games instead of modern ones. Like Obama's, the ads were professionally photoshopped by Paul Tassi, and are a throwback to a simpler time. A time when gas was cheap, video games were basic, and I had no idea what my penis was for. I think it's a coffee stirrer." - Bret Taylor

"Playing off the recent outburst against Obama at a McCain-Palin rally by Gayle Quinnell, who said she's read of Obama "that he was an Arab," Thursday night's edition of "Saturday Night Live," featured a skit in which a crazy McCain-Palin supporter in a red t-shirt wandered onto the set of "Weekend Update" to proclaim such things as Barack Obama "is 50% Egyptian, he's going to change the White House to a pyramid."" - Jess Lee

They're awesome. Except the one where there's a concrete wall between the two, which could possibly be the worst feng shui in the history of photography. ;-) - Chris Baskind
But she's breaching the wall, Chris! So symbolically she's coming through to his side... though, upside down... which symbolizes a breach birth... which curiously uses two meanings for "breach"... so, maybe you're right... - Lindsay Donaghe
Thanks to Ross (my cousin, FriendFeed intern) and Robert Scoble for being the sources for my analysis (little did they know!). My talk focused on the signals we are looking at to create better automatic filtering and ranking interfaces for FriendFeed. (Emily is Ross's sister by the way, if you are wondering why he likes her entries so much.) - Bret Taylor
Josh -- we've barely scratched the surface of analyzing social media and networking. The AI-based social network analysis software of the future will optimize the interactions and experiences of billions of people. We are still at a very primitive stage in figuring this stuff out. - Sean McBride
Imagine a rapidly self-evolving global superintelligence firing on all cylinders, maximizing the productivity and self-actualization of billions of people simultaneously. That is the long term strategic objective of AI-based social network analysis, collaborative filtering, recommender systems, etc. We're barely at step 1. - Sean McBride
I love this path. FF makes me increasingly less likely to use my reader. Yet, I know there are some worthwhile nuggets in there that I am missing. This kind of intelligence improves the chances that I am predictably surfaced everything I would want to be. I love it. - Christopher Sacca
Awesome. I'm going to buy Emily cookies so she likes more of my posts. :-) - Robert Scoble
Did someone record this talk? I'd love to see it, since I'm one of the sources. Hey, Bret, want to get together when you get back? I'd love to talk more in depth about this with you. I think you're onto something very important. - Robert Scoble
I wonder what effect I had vs. my brother. :-) - Robert Scoble
Friendfeed remains ahead of the game. Bret a driving industry force. - Alex Hammer
Saying she reads the Internets might have helped. - Chris White
I can name 2 newspapers I read in Alaska. The Fairbanks Daily Newsminer and the Anchorage Daily News. That was 4 fricking years ago and I can still name them. - Erica Baker
There are no words...I mean like gee...she's all like...WTF - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
(A) Honesty: "I read the Wasilia Moosehumper, but usually just have time for Family Circus and Dear Abbey". (B) Lying: "I read the Journal, Harper's, the Economist, and the Harvard Law Review". (C) Cluelessness: "Um. All of them." - Steve Weis
Couric: "What about blogs, do you keep up with any blogs?" Palin: "Yes, I read any of the ones put in front of me. I read all of them Katie." - Jason Shellen
Why are you all so hard on her? She said she reads most, all, and any put in front of her. Oh, and a vast variety of sources. How can you argue with that?! I mean, personally, I've only read a "bunch," so she has me beat - I think. - Vince DeGeorge
I read a bunch too. Google News. Memeorandum. FriendFeed. Between the three all the world's newspapers come into my view. But at least I could tell you something about them. How can we get her to go away? Please make it stop. I really hope this helps the Republican Party purge themselves of all the Religious Right jerks who've destroyed that party in the past 20 years. - Robert Scoble
I can't name a newspaper I read cause I don't read newspapers. I get all my news from the screen in front of me or a little bit from the TV. - Mathew Ballard
I think the important thing to remember is we are not 'picking on her', we are trying to hold her to the high standard the office she is applying for demands... - Johnny Worthington
Why does it feel like, the worse Palin appears, the more likely she's actually going to get voted into office? Oh, I remember now. That's what happened in the 2004 election. - Victor Ganata
I tell you one thing, she has really made me appreciate Hillary... - Vince DeGeorge
She should NOT have said she "reads them all". WTF kinda answer is that. I'm trying not to be on the Palin hater bandwagon, but she just won't work with me... - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
she reads "all of 'em. any of 'em." she's very entertaining! god bless her - Cee Bee
Alright, that's it - Palin has officially entered "un-parody-able" territory. Any joke about how uninformed she is only pales in comparison to the reality of how uninformed she is. SNL has got nothing on this Katie Couric footage. - Adam Kazwell
good god help us. This is it. I'm utterly disgusted at the joke that McCain and his campaign have made out of our election process and our government as a whole with this woman (sure, there are people there I'm sure who don't like her, but this nonsense was allowed to happen). - Chieze Okoye
I saw this mentioned this weekend, but I agree. It's cruel to put her in this position. She clearly isn't knowledgeable enough to answer these questions. She also clearly freezes up when challenged. They had to have some clue these were traits of her's before putting her up there. - Occasional Headbanger
more shit...this has got to go AWAY now dammit!! this is sooo stuoooopid! - Susan Beebe (Santa Claus)
this is a totally different stage than she's used to. they might not have known she would be like this under these conditions. <trying to give benefit of the doubt> - Jon Price
You know what I take away from this? That she reads and believes anything put in front of her. Let's hope the Taliban aren't sending her spoofed articles. *removes tongue from cheek* - Lindsey

Not judging perspective, but Bush was proud not to listen to news and katrina happened under his nose. They had to basically put a You Tube style of clips in front of him so he could figure out what was happening. I am very concerned about someone who doesn't expose themselves to news that doesn't filter through their handlers. They should not be so easily controlled. - Eric @ CS Techcast
Dan: "get in trouble"??? with who? even if she said National Review Online, Wall Street Journal and the New York Times, she still would have covered her ass on the right-wing side. Hell, I'm not running for anything (yet) and read those all the time. I wouldn't even expect her to read them everyday, but at least be able to list something. - Anika Malone
I just brought myself to watch this clip. My God. Seriously? Seriously? Are they for reals? Seriously? How Katie didn't just stop the strolling and say point blank "Please, just name one newspaper you read.", I'll never know. Although, the look on her face was awesome. Your face said it out loud Katie. - Yolanda
I'm sick of giving her the benefit of the doubt. She's had how long to prepare and CAN'T NAME A SINGLE NEWSPAPER IN THE US?? Any other position where she's this clearly mismatched (scratch that, unqualified) for the role, ANY OTHER POSITION, and she would have been laughed out of the room. This is completely ridiculous. - Chieze Okoye
w. Sadly Tina Fey's excellent parody is straight up. She doesn't need to presenhy wouldst a caricature, just the real thing... she get into trouble for naming a newspaper. That's ridiculou - Tim Wolters

Ok, we all agree. Not smart. Perhaps the title should be: "Sarah Palin Can't Name a Newspaper She Doesn't Read." What would your alternate video title be? - Jason Shellen
"I think the Onion has some great insight" But seriously, say WSJ, NYT, Washington Times - heck you'd even get points for USA Today. - AJ Kohn
If she says 1 particular newspaper, then people will drill down on that paper and assume that is the only place she gets her information from... and if she says 1 newspaper, the moment she has an opinion about something all media will be able to link it to one newspaper and its potential biases. She answered the question strategically here. I don't mind the answer. - Mike
She is totally in touch with the "microcosm of America" -- who actually reads newspapers or magazine anymore anyway? Reading is for lefty wimps. - Pete Delucchi
c'mon, she pretty much said she only reads what is put in front of her (at this point by Republican party handlers), which to me is actually worse than not saying "all of 'em" or "getting in trouble" for name dropping the wrong ones. basically it says she reads only what someone tells her too. I could never support someone that has this little curiosity about the world. - Jon Price
This is an app some friends and I built to encourage registrations among college students in exchange for concerts from Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, Wyclef Jean, and Jason Mraz. Check it out. OMG I am so glad you did this! I had this idea last election and someone told me it would be akin to paying people to vote which would be illegal in some way. That's what I get for listening to others. - Erica Baker
We did a lot of research into this. Leaving it non-partisan keeps us in the clear. Or, so the lawyers tell us. :) - Christopher Sacca
What happens when they don't have any incentive? This disturbs me on some level, even if it is non-partisan. Let's face it, most professors aren't non-partisan. - Jill, Superhero Librarian
To me these things sign up uninformed, fairly apathetic voters. Often events / groups like this combine it with heavy propaganda on who to vote for. While in this case I suspect Chris has the best of intentions - I find the whole food / concert / pony ride for registration thing a bit iffy :) - Soulhuntre
via twhirl
Wow. Only on FriendFeed can one find people opposed to voter registration drives. :) - Christopher Sacca
I'm not opposed to voter registration drives. I'm opposed to rewarding people for something they should do because it's a responsibility we have in this country. And even if you register these people, it doesn't mean they'll actually get to the polls. This demographic doesn't tend to vote even when mass drives result in tons registered. I think somehow you are still missing the bigger problem here. (And again, it's almost impossible to keep anything non-partisan on a college campus.) - Jill, Superhero Librarian
I'v been to a number of GOTV concerts on college campuses and all I've ever seen is *information* about the candidate(s) made available to the concert goers. Have you seen lots of *propaganda*, Soulhuntre? - Ayşe E.
@JMS I don't understand how making an effort to reach out to young people is so wrong. Do I think that all of these kids will register and show up? No. Just like all of the people who put stuff in their Amazon shopping carts don't necessarily end up checking out. Nevertheless, if I can help bring more awareness to the process and make it more accessible to young people, I will. - Christopher Sacca
I haven't said it's wrong. It's great to reach out. Are you listening? I said that I think it's wrong to reward them for doing something they should do because it's the right thing to do. Have a concert, fine. Don't make it a contest though. Have something that will draw a ton of this age group in and provide them with education. Again, don't make them win it. While it may not technically be illegal, it still seems rather unethical. That's what I'm saying. - Jill, Superhero Librarian
Ayse - have I every seen propaganda at registration drives? Hell yes I have. Most campus registration drives are not "register and vote" they are "register and vote - here, use this pen provided by candidate x, along with his tasty free soda. Oh, and remember, candidate bob really cares about you!". On paper is that what they claim to do? no. In reality is it what they do? Yes. Is that what Christopher is doing? I said I didn't think so. - Soulhuntre
As for the whole concept? Frankly i am not sure if I want people in the electorate who only registered cause their favorite band told them it was cool. - Soulhuntre
@Soulhuntre Oh, you mean in contrast to the really sophisticated analysis so many other voters make? :) - Christopher Sacca
@Christopher - adding MORE unthinking voters to the pool is not the answer to the ones already there. Frankly? I'm with Heinlein on this :) - Soulhuntre
getting people to engage is the first step - and if it takes a musician serving as an effective role model, then so be it. Having spent time with will and wyclef (via Chris), i'm confident their message to youth voters is about getting educated to make informed, powerful choices, not just rocking the vote because it's cool this year. - hunter walk
I'm always skeptical of people who need some kind of reward to care about voting. I can't help that. - Brian Norwood
Props to you and the brothers iLike, Sacca. Love it. - Dave Morin
+1 Christopher Sacca. JMS, what is your problem with rewarding people for doing things they "should" do, as long as the reward isn't coming out of your pocket? If I bake a pie, and decide to give a slice to people for voting, what business is it of yours? - Karim
JMS, aren't you familiar with the fact that George Washington won election to the Virginia House of Burgesses basically by getting all the eligible voters (white land-owning males) in the county drunk on rum punch? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B...) Would you say Washington's actions were "not technically illegal" but "still seem rather unethical?" - Karim
we can't have YOUNG people engaged and interested in politics, oh noes! 'cause we know how THEY vote, wink wink nudge nudge say no more. - Karim
Soulhuntre, as for "Frankly i am not sure if I want people in the electorate who only registered cause their favorite band told them it was cool," I think it beats people who voted only because someone got them drunk off their ass. That's how Washington got his start in 1758. Madison once tried to NOT do this in 1777 (bribe the electorate) but found "the old habits were too deeply rooted to be suddenly reformed," and lost. - Karim
"The people not only tolerated, but expected and even required to be courted and treated. No candidate, who neglected those attentions, could be elected." -- James Madison - Karim
Soulhuntre, thx for your reply. Not questioning your response to Christopher; just curious what you regard as propaganda. Seems one person's propaganda is another's advocacy. But are we really concerned that people are influenced in their opinion by the use of a pen w/ a candidate's name on it? Seriously? When there's voter fraud, vote suppression, and outright disinformation afoot? - Ayşe E.
This is laugh out loud funny. And then immediately rather sad because after seeing the Katie Couric interview it's pretty clear that this trailer may not be all that far from Palin's actual IQ. - Cathy Brooks

Yes, but this isn't really reality. A disney movie probably wouldn't have moose killing and evangelist overtones. Silly liberals trying to make things seem worse than they are. - Chris White

I enjoy listening and watching Leo, Dvorack, etc. when it comes to technology discussions. The more I see the higher echelon of FF and Twitter talk about politics, the more I wish there was a filter I could apply. I mean, this was just a funny picture that gives Obama supporters another means to look down on people who do not support Obama, but I've seen Dvorack's outrageous blog post about Palin's children, and I've read Scoble's mistatements regarding Huckabee's speech at the convention. - Charles LePage
Perhaps if one admires mavericks, one spells words whatever way one wants. - jswi_jim
The democrats' signs were much slicker. With every speaker at the DNC they passed out new ones -- there were hillary ones, biden ones, michelle etc. all beautifully printed on nice sanded sticks. Not a hand painted sign in the crowd, all the perfectly the same, and no chance for a misspelling. Good stagecraft. The hand painted signs make me cringe from a design/spell check pov, but they are authentic. - "Oldengrey" Tannenbaum
What is this? The Republican Friendfeeders coming in to comment swiftboat style? Lighten up for Christ's sake! Obviously you've yet to discover what a sense of humour is. Let me know when you find one and I'll teach you how to install it. - Mark O'Neill
Geez, Mark, maybe you could lighten up a little. The Republicans were commenting on the headline, which was perhaps uncharitable and directed at them. I think Leo is great, and I think Dvorak has no problem taking care of himself. They are completely entitled to their opinions outside the world of tech. That's why I subscribe to them. We live in a great country, don't we? - "Oldengrey" Tannenbaum
Misspelling and bad grammar goes across the board, even at MoveOn (http://skitch.com/chilimac/i87...). I've been known to make a mistake once in a while my self. I know, shocking. Maybe that will be the next big tech idea. Electronic campaign posters with built in spell checker. - ChiliMac

Mark, from Wikipedia: "Swiftboating is American political jargon that is used as a strong pejorative description of some kind of attack that the speaker considers unfair or untrue—for example, an ad hominem attack or a smear campaign. Most accurately, it refers to the repudiation of a politician's personal history by people who were present as that history was made." Does the speaker (Leo) consider my comment to be untrue? - Charles LePage
