“VC shutdown underway? One entrepreneur told me her deal with Intel Capital fell apart after they lowered valuation from $5 mil to $1. Ouch.”

I think we have not reached the bottom until now. Worse luck! - Marcel Janus
wow, crazy. tell her to contact me if she needs any development - Jason Pratt
I am trying to remain personally optimistic, but I don't believe the bottom has been reached. - Louis Landon
This is what I love about being a student and working with other students. I can do everything much cheaper. $1 mil would probably fund my current business for 2+ years easily. - Daniel Zarick
It'll get worse before it gets better. Next two quarters will be tough. - Patricia
@Louis Landon Me too. I still hope thing will get better. - Marcel Janus
Eventually, things will get better. - Patricia
how people/firms/investors respond in bad times is much more telling of their character than how they respond in good times. they're doing it because they think they can get away with it. that window will close. - Bryce Roberts
Look, things are really bad and getting worse. They will eventually get better as Patricia says, but it will be hard for very many people. No one is really insulated, but there's no point in panicking or worrying about what you can't fix. However, we all should try to understand WTF happened and learn from it. I just shared a speech today by Charlie McCreevy of the European Commission in my timeline that everyone should read. It's simple and clear. - IRWebReport.com
better worse better worse better worse better worse better worse ... been going on forever, every up has a down ... why complain about the inevitable? - Gregory Lent
I don't doubt that VCs are having a tough time, but Intel Capital wanting to lower the valuation to $1 doesn't mean Intel Capital is having a tough time. It means some of the previous investors who participated in the rounds leading to the $5 mil are no longer putting in more money, and Intel wants to squeeze them out. They don't want to carry nonperforming investors. Those other VCs might be shutting down, I guess. - Denton Gentry
You kinda get the feeling that the 'world' is on hold until someone, anyone, suggests a REAL solution. Crazy stuff - Charlie Anzman
I have to say I agree with Denton. Value of a company is still consistent with the market. At the end, you're only worth what somebody's willing to pay. - Patricia
I also agree what Denton and Patricia have said. - imabonehead
I recently had one of those 'holy shit' idea moments, and I am wondering if I'll even be able to get seed capital. - Michael R. Bernstein
In many ways this is just a sign of a smart VC is it not? I'm hearing that most VCs are going to be lowballing valuations in 2009, using the economy as the 'excuse'. Extend your runway if you can and wait until the funding environment isn't as unbalanced. - AJ Kohn
I can understand if the lowered value was just 1M but from 5 to 1? That's gotta suck - Canada's Web Shop
Well the other thing is that VC isn't always the ideal expansion route. Everybody gets excited about, because it can be useful and it can be the right thing - but as somebody mentored by quite a few successful serial entrepreneurs, and a few VC, everybody says the same: don't do it unless you have to. The barrier of entry and costs of web business are so low. I went three years self funding, then started to look at financing options which I didn't end up needing. In a nutshell, it's not the only way to skin the cat in financing a startup. - Patricia
AJ, if I invested in a startup now, I would invest much less than a year ago. I think the risk in the economy is enough of a reason to give a lower valuation, since there is higher risk you won't get your money back. - Chris White
@Chris: Absolutely. I'm not saying there's not a real risk. The risk/reward ratio is steeper in this environment. But VCs are going to over-correct IMO, both to protect against risk and maximize reward. - AJ Kohn
As someone working on his own startup right now I can say categorically that if you are looking to raise VC money you are nuts. There IS NO potential for massive growth right now... there is no expendable income in the economy. Bootstrap - find partners and customers... sell what you can and try and survive. That is all. - Brian Roy
Another data point here is that very serious suitors of Genalyte, the company I work for, pulled back. We're now in survival mode, but that's not to say we aren't able to get some interest from some of the bigger players. My industry is biotech, and although the sector is down like everything else, we've not have a industry-specific bubble and crash yet. I think there's tremendous potential for growth in our sector for technologies that present significant cost savings over competitors. - Mr. Gunn
As CEO of a startup, I gave up on Venture Capital in September. Anyone paying attention could see the signs of slowing investment since the spring. But September slammed the door. What worries me now, though, isn't the VC markets. What worries me is the credit card market. AMEX is slashing credit limits, which will hurt small businesses and slow innovation far more than any VC slowdown. Real innovation happens on the back of credit, until a case can be made to risk-averse VCs that there's a real business opportunity. When credit is gone, our economy is like an engine running without any oil. - Chris Kenton via twhirl
So a good time for the super rich to help small businesses then ;o) - Rob Sellen
The first question you have to ask yourself is - can I do this and generate profit (or at minimum be revenue neutral)? If not you've got big problems. You have to do whatever you need to do to get to profit... NOW. - Brian Roy

But I do not like the new Reader - Threepwood
I liked the old one.. was getting used t it nicley.. could have asked us to give em feedback first lol.. :o/ - Rob Sellen
I preferred the old one as well - Duncan Riley
And how hard would it be to just give the user the choice as to how it looks? - James D Kirk
It's just a case of getting used to it. I think. I didn't like it originally but it does grow on a person - Paul Sharrock via IM
I was quite disappointed about the change as well. - trextor
Ugh -- not a fan either. Much like with the stink I raised over the iGoogle shift a while back, I'm not sure why they can't give us an option here, as James said above. - JR R.
I was happy with the old one. Don't much like the new look even though it is a subtle change. Wish they would put a "change back to old view" like Yahoo does. - Jeff P. Henderson
I like it, except the line items need to go back to their smaller size. - Jordan Hofker
Just seems like change for change's sake. The look isn't an improvement on the previous style. It's too washed-out now. Bring back the colored background for the left column at least. - Rowan Hanna
some themes can be added just as what had been done with Gmail. - pestwave
Missing the old google reader. We had just gotten to know eachother well. We were vibing. - Ebm
I like the new GReader... nice and clean... - Aad 't Hart
I think it's neater. Is it faster or am I just a big enthousiast ? - Genaro Bardy via twhirl
i didn't even notice the change, and I spend a LOT of time in my reader - William Harryman
I like the new look. - Denton Gentry
My reader on the iPhone is messed up. The lines don't wrap. I tried clearing the cache but no luck. This happening to anyone else? - Brian Newman
I liked it at first, but that wore off quickly - Shey
the overly bold text is grating to me... my whole left column is nearly all bold - Nathan Chase
yeah... be nice if we can have own themes like in gmail :o) - Rob Sellen
iPhone version needs to be fixed but the new version looks great in my browser. Not sure what "soft and feminine" is supposed to mean. I just have more white. Same palette different combination. For the "tough guys" out there, request themes from Google. The optimization of real estate is something I have been wanting them to do for the longest time. Finally. My content is taking up more of the screen and my subscription list is now pushed all the way down anymore thanks to collapsing boxes. Good stuff. - Rolf Schewe

The semantic web is really interesting. But I think it will take some time before it "happens". I've been using the semantic interest network Twine for awhile...quite cool, although the semantics are still a bit rough at the edges. - Patrik Johansson
Interesting. Semantic web stratifying, unifying and ultimately destroying the web. The stratifying, unifying sounds like an undesirable potential side effect of Greader's new "bundle" algorithm. - Brad
cheers Robert, I've commented over there (in short: it won't "Think", but it'll help us in thinking/decision-making) - Danny Ayers

There are as many semantic models of the world as there are individuals and groups at any given time. View the world through as many different conceptual lenses as you fancy. That's another vision of the future of the Semantic Web. The dominant global consensus model may well be wrong on a regular basis. - Sean McBride
Good point Sean. You view of a semantic result may not be my view. - Robert Miller

right next to Larry and Sergey - Bob
Lol Bob i dont think Larry & Sergey will be sleeping like babys...the N97 seems good competition for android in my opinion - Eldon via twhirl
Eldon, there is no, and there will be no competition in near future for Android. If you want functionality, a open world of apps, there is no alternative. When you want to have a lifestyle gadget get an iPhone. Android (which is a whole platform, not a single device) is for tech guys and Google users, not for snobs. If there are some who can sleep like a baby, it's the one from Google. There will be new Android phones, when the iPhone is already history. - Ryo
@Scobleizer I have a "disagreement" in point of view, to me, S60 application development is up to Symbian not Nokia, at least that's my take on it. Nokia develops it's own software, but they're not in the same "genre" (bad word choice) as Apple... - Sociosophy Reviews via twhirl
Sociosophy: Nokia owns Symbian now and is open sourcing it too. - Robert Scoble
Holy moly! That's huge news to me... Nokia owns Symbian? I had to jump to Google News just to verify that's so awesome. Ok, yea - Nokia needs to step their friggin game up on dev now for sure then... That's... I'm excited - Enrique Gutierrez via twhirl
@robert; But there are serious differences. Android is a real open system, a nice gui and infinite possibilities. The iPhone is a closed, very cool gui for snobs, running from a insane genius with a lot of disciples. And Symbian is simply a pile of shit. - Ryo
Androids short comings are the fact that the phone feels like a pile of under developed garbage. The iPhone has a large dev base, but once Adobe releases mobile Flash & god forbid AIR, that game is up. Symbian needs work, but if anyone can make an improvement, it's Nokia - Enrique Gutierrez via twhirl
Aren't we all too focused on the US? Mobile phones are fast proliferating in other parts of the world where Nokia has a strong base and market share.I believe that means a strong Symbian developer base too? Thinking aloud... - kamla bhatt
Kamla: It's been that way forever too. Back in the early 2000's GSM was all the rage with 140+ countries adopting the technology, partly due to poor land line services. Nokia's been ahead of the curve (globally) for ages. - Sociosophy Reviews via twhirl
It's true Nokia has a massive footprint. But many people who have even the S60 smartphones don't even know how to install apps, and you can forget about the S40 users :-). - sixbit
sixbit: I'm assuming you've never used the Nokia Application Installer via PC Suite or Ovi? It's mindless and fast. Also, apps can be installed from the phone-based browser. - Sociosophy Reviews
@ryo I couldn't agree more with you. Apple has done a great job with making apps available but Apple's characteristics limitations restrict it from achieving it's true potential. Android on the other hand has limitless possibilities which will only truly be displayed from 2010 onwards when a lot more devices start coming out without necessarily outdating current gen Android devices. - Bhavishya Kanjhan
What I like about S60 phones is their ability to sync with Lotus Notes (what I use at work). So, I think I will stay with Nokia. - Olivier CASTETS
@sociosophy I install apps on my S60, but not nearly as often as on my iphone or android phone. but thats besides the point, i'm a mobile developer, and my point is the the average person who has a Nokia doesn't even bother with the PC Suite or Ovi. - sixbit
@Enrique. I don't have any confidence that Adobe can sufficiently optimise Flash/Air on mobile devices so that your phone's battery wont sucked dry in minutes. If they can't even get decent performance on Mac or Linux, then I don't see how Adobe can magic up some decent performance on mobile devices. - Paul Grav
@ryo I like Android but love iPhone. Just plain easier. And, IMHO, limitations can be liberating. A sonnet is difficult, but satisfying. It is early in the game. Apple might get more open (the kernel is there,) if the competition demands it. It is easier to open a closed system than to close an open one. - Phil Boiarski
Maybe not so much after AT&T's announce they want 1 OS (possibly Symbian) for all the (rest of the) the phones they sell. The Symbian ecosystem from cheap phones through expensive ones like the new Nokia could hold back "time to get a new phone" customers on T who have the dough to buy an iPhone. Unless of course Jobs has got a little $99 phone (w/o big subsidies, which AT&T isn't going to take up the a** anymore) in his pocket. Or, if this 1 OS is the iPhone OS itself. But that isn't what T said. - Wade Dorrell

'Offensive' Tui billboard takes a hasty flight
6 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
Why is it offensive? - Sofia Gkiousou
"who labelled the provocative billboard "appalling" and said it demeaned the holiness and meaning of Christmas." Oh give me a break! - Sofia Gkiousou
As a strictly non-religious person, I say; "Hell yeah that's offensive". It's not like it's challenging creationism or anything, it's just needlessly offensive to a lot of people for no good reason. - Sean
Sean this is just all too politically correct for my taste. sorry. - Sofia Gkiousou
As a Christian, I'll say my jaw dropped, then I chuckled, and then I thought. Probably what they were going for. I wasn't offended, but I can see how people would be. And I'll agree with Sean that it does seem needless and pointless. - Ladybug Heather
comment on the culture, well done - Gregory Lent
Considering how "christmas" has been an marketing ploy for who knows how long now.. its got less about christ than ever... I am not religious, but but even if i was, i doubt it would offend me. Whats "Tui"? Is that a company or something over there? - Rob Sellen
Several things could be offensive to different people (discussing what is offensive or not leads to quite hypocritical and contradictory conclusions). I would comment it's good enough to attract attention, thus meeting it's purpose as an ad. - Cωνσtantίnoς
That's true... controversy works for getting attention... as prooved here. ;o) - Rob Sellen
That's hilarious! Ah, Tui. Did it again... - kirsten
IMO, it's a condescending remark and that's offensive. - MikeAmundsen
christianity is condescending - Gregory Lent
Religion is condescending...IMO. - Rob Sellen
Rob +1 - Clay Newton
:o) Is that...an agreement with me? lol :o) - Rob Sellen
Who is Tui? - Clay Newton
As a Christian, I took it as a way of saying Christmas has lost its meaning, which is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. However, I can truly see why some would be offended. I am not. True intentions and emotions are not always express properly in writing, but in this case maybe so because here we are talking about it. On the other hand, this is coming from a beer company. - Valley
ah..beer... lol.. :o) Smart marketing if you ask me... - Rob Sellen
@Rob, @Gregory, @Clay. condescension is not a plus. no matter the source or the target. fun is fun. making a point is appreciated. beliefs are handy. an 'I'm better than you' attitude detracts from all those things. - MikeAmundsen
Who said "I'm better than you"? Noone.. who said it was a plus? no one... it just IS what it is. - Rob Sellen
You have to understand that this is not in the US, it's in New Zealand where the sense of humour is entirely different from the US. People don't get offended as much by things that are true but otherwise seen as taboo. Like saying Christmas is not all about Christ these days. It may be for some, but not the majority by a long shot. Tui is one of the biggest beers in NZ. You'll get the idea of their irreverant marketing by going to their site where they have a *cool shit* section. http://www.tui.co.nz - Scott Lockhart
Good point... :o) the diversity of world humour is a big thing ;o) - Rob Sellen
Yeah, Christianity needs to learn how to laugh, in general, and at itself. Sad that this has caused issues. - Robert Miller
Thanks, Scott! - Clay Newton
It makes me really happy that the Catholic bishop said the ad was "great". - James O'Malley via twhirl
The point here is not whether it's poking fun at Christianity or not; the point is that the company *knew* that this was a sensitive topic and *still* decided to go ahead with it for the "shock" value. IMO "that" has to be discouraged and I'm glad they took it down. - vijay
@vijay this would be a very boring (and much scarier) world if we weren't shocked once in a while, even by advertising. Honestly there's a lot more to be upset about in the world than a beer billboard on some building in Hamilton, New Zealand. It's a lovely town by the way. - Scott Lockhart
Reads more like social commentary to me. They're acknowledging the lack of such discussion during the holidays. Might as well have a beer, since it's unlikely that will change. - abacab
Tolerance is a lost art and action. Perhaps we (humanity and religions) need to relearn this art. Yes, there are actions for which tolerance is not acceptable, like genocide. At the other extreme is religious intolerance and, globally, we have too much of that right now. Tolerance is a blessing. - Robert Miller
Scott it'll be fun until it touches a subject close to our heart. Just replace the first line with something you feel strongly about and see how fun that is. { Btw, NZ, holy wow, that entire island is gorgeous! } - vijay
Vijay...it's people like YOU that spread the word of what the ad was supposed to do.. get read, gets eyeballs.. working is it not? Comaring it saying somethig about a country doesn't work. like with NZ for ex.. If you think about it there is several messages in the ad. :o) Plus as been said...bigger issues than a bloody ad1 :o) - Rob Sellen
@Rob: i understand your point. my use of the word "condescension" (patronizing) was apparently too literal for this discussion [http://www.merriam-webster.com...]. - MikeAmundsen
christmas had nothing to do with christ .. it is way way older - Gregory Lent
@mike.. I guess so ;o) ALL religion is patronising...full stop, it's ORGANISED for a start... there is no two same beliefs..can't happen, we are unique, so are our beliefs... NOTHING organised about it ;o) - Rob Sellen
1 : voluntary descent from one's rank or dignity in relations with an inferior 2 : patronizing attitude or behavior : ..... patronizing attitude or behavior ... yup , christianity is totally qualified to be labeled condescending - Gregory Lent
Another important point... Vijay, you said, well they did it cos they knew it would offend, glad to seen sense, and took it down.... WRONG.. its right there above us.. ;o) I never BEEN anywhere NEAR where it was posted, yet its had MORE eyeballs than it would have done anyway BECAUSE of the controversy its produced...got us talking, spreading it, etc.. worth doing? stick up offensive in humour billboard, cause a stir...apologise, take it down, KNOWING its spread over the net already... :o) smart marketing! - Rob Sellen
@Rob, @Gregory: heh, i've got no argument on *what* is condescending, just making a personal statement about how i feel about that<g>. we're all cool, right? - MikeAmundsen
in india there is a huge sensibility, and laws, about behaviour that could incite riots, basically .... in america, not so much, - Gregory Lent
course we are cool.... discussion and that are always good.... :o) no beef with anyone here :o) - Rob Sellen
btw - i was kinda hoping someone would point out that ".. my use of the word condescension was too literal for this discussion..." was... (wait for it..). a bit patronizing<g>. - MikeAmundsen
In a sense it fitted! ;o) - Rob Sellen
