From the page: "Putting up a maintenance page while you are doing an update and restarting your application servers is good practice, but it definitely hurts the user experience. This, in turn, translates to less frequent releases and frustration for both the developer and the users (release often, release early!). To address this, the Rails community has come up with a couple of approaches to mitigate the problem: Seesaw, one-at-a-time restarts, and Swiftiply, none of which, unfortunately, caught on with the crowd. Well, it turns out, HAProxy has a beautiful solution for this problem!" - James Carlos

Reusing code is a great way to save time and money over the course of a website development. One thing that I have been looking to add to my developer toolkit is a CSS file that is flexible, well-organized, lightweight, and easy to learn. The result of my efforts to create such a tool, Momentum CSS Framework, is now ready to be released into the wild under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license. - James Carlos

Helvetireader is a userscript that pares down Google Reader to what I consider to be the essentials. In particular, it's made for looking at feeds in the expanded view, using Keyboard Shortcuts instead of on screen buttons. It’s not going to suit how everyone uses Google Reader, so you can take the CSS and fiddle and personalise to your hearts content! - James Carlos

Usability testing is a good idea for any new web site. Increasing the usability of your web site is a good idea because it will increase visitor satisfaction, which in turn increases sales and user loyalty. On the business savings side, usability testing can also save you money in development, maintenance, and support costs. Unfortunately, traditional usability tests is pricey — it can cost up to tens of thousands of dollars to run a usability test. - James Carlos

Do you use multiple web browsers? Juggling multiple web browsers is not so uncommon to overcome incompatibity and inefficiency of web sites or browsers that are not well optimized to web standards. But it's not that power users who know how to install and use multiple browsers actually love the hassle at the cost of their precious time. - James Carlos

The plugin transforms an unoredered list of images into a box displaying only one preview image at a time. The box has controls to skim through the preview images and to enlarge a given image. The box expands to accomodate the enlarged version, while the controls are hidden in full image size mode. A simple click on the image returns the box to its compact state. - James Carlos

Every now and again we take a look around, select “fresh” high-quality free fonts and present them to you in a brief overview. The choice is enormous, so the time you need to find them is usually the time you should be investing in your current projects. We search for them and we find them, so you don’t have to. - James Carlos
