What do you think? Is her curmudgeon-ness warranted? - Marnie Webb
In a way I think it is warranted. She makes some very good points, and she follows up with an action plan, which I think makes the overall post quite positive. - Laura Norvig

jcolman - what do you think? - Beth Kanter via Bookmarklet
I've been thinking a lot about social search for a while. And although there's likely to be a lot of worrying and fear-mongering about it in our industry (and others), overall I think that it's a really good thing. As presented here, social search helps our causes' best supporters create search structures that aid them in returning to our web sites. - Jonathon D. Colman
Remember that search is, essentially *already* influenced by social actions. As web managers, we all ascribe credibility and relevancy to resources online by linking to them -- and search engines take note of those actions when they rank sites. - Jonathon D. Colman

“Trying an experiment here. I added a feed from the twitter account nptechblogs - it will automatically add the tweets from that account which are links to blog posts from nptech blogs. Not sure who set it up. But I just discovered that rooms can have feeds streamed in .. what do you think?”

add more feeds, take off all automated feeds, only certain feeds? - Beth Kanter
I'm not wild about the automated feed entry here. I like that people have to take an action to put something into this room. Makes it feel a little more intentional and different from the stream I already see via RSS. But maybe that's just me. - Marnie Webb
I'm torn. I'm skimming them and finding some good stuff serendipitously, but it's a bit much and seems like it may push the native posts of active friendfeeders too far down the stream. - Laura Norvig
Hi! I created the @nptechblogs feed (so any crashing of computers or other catastrophes, please blame me!) -- and I agree with Marnie. Even the best aggregation doesn't beat a good community. ... What do you think about creating a unique tag which the 200 FriendFeed folks here could use in Delicious and Twitter (and other places) -- and maybe aggregate those in this feed. Could lower barrier of entry. We did this in the Peer to Peer Social Change room -- with the tag "p2pchange" -- http://is.gd/3uxV - Joe Solomon
okay coming back after few days - Marnie I think the automated thing thing - that we both dislike is generational. Old farts like me like intentional ... younger folks are comfortable with the fire hose what do you think? - Beth Kanter
just took the automated feed offf .. I may be to tired .. but wonder if/how impact on membership was attributed to that. I'm pondering Joe's idea .. - Beth Kanter
Agreed that I may be in the old fart intentional community with you. But I already get the automated stuff via twitter, rss, yahoo pipes, etc etc. I want some intentional communities. So wondering how the two -- intentional and automated -- fit together. A new tag nptechff could be one way to manage it but what else? - Marnie Webb
the positive aspect of bringing the feeds in was that the room had something posted every day so it stayed as a fresh and current room, which floats it to the top of people's room lists. I'd be in favor of bringing a few select blogs in. the twitter stuff was overkill, IMO. - Laura Norvig

An interesting discussion about fundraising on facebook and how most folks are disappointed with it. IMHO, this is completely understandable since most folks just look at the # of Facebook users and expect them all to convert instantly upon arrival of their nonprofit brand. But that's not how communities work. We have to find meaningful, relevant ways to engage those users in order to gain their trust and support. That involves listening and experimenting with strategies, like the one that I propose in a comment to the above-linked post. :) - Jonathon D. Colman

Finally, Learn and Serve America, a division of the Corporation for National and Community Service, recently announced that the Phoenix Project will receive $550,000 to encourage increased levels of service and civic participation by college students throughout the United States. The Phoenix Project, together with partners George Mason University and Craigslist Foundation, will use the grant to research whether and how social media tools can engage more students in service to the nonprofit and municipal agencies confronting difficult challenges within their communities nationwide. If unmet needs are identified through the research, the partnership aims to use social media tools to respond to those community needs and increase student service. - Reed Stockman

“How do you define "social media" as opposed to "social networking"? Have you noticed that the first term is becoming ubiquitous while the second term is not used much anymore?”
September 29 at 4:14 pm - Link
I usually say that 'social networking' or 'social networks' are the 'private side' (facebook, linkedin, etc) , and 'social media' the 'public side' (digg, delicious, flickr, youtube, twitter, friendfeed) - Alex Barredo
Great point, Laura, something I've been thinking about as I'm helping my organization write up a social media policy. I first learned the term "social media" from Beth K. and agree that "social network" and, esp. "social networking" are going by the wayside. Another question to throw on the heap: how do you refer to a place where one finds social media? A social media "presence"? An "outlet"? Something else altogether? God help us if it's "social media network" -- arrrrgh! - Jonathon D. Colman
You mean like a place where an organization might bring in all their social media RSS feeds? How about a "social media hub"? Although I suppose that could be ambiguous also! - Laura Norvig
I would interpret 'social media' as being either an individual item of or a collective noun for an information delivery technology or platform e.g a podcast, a blog, RSS, etc. and 'Social networking' is something that happens as a result of infornation sharing using social media - Tony Molloy
I rather like danah boyd's definition of a social network site: We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. The nature and nomenclature of these connections may vary from site to site.(http://jcmc.indiana.edu/vol13/...) - Fitzgerald Steele
what's interesting to me is how people define the word 'media'. I was originally thinking of it as mediums that go beyond words so, photos, videos - hence flickr and youtube as 'social media'. There is also the sense of media in its common use as 'news'. However, there is another thread on FF, which I can't find now, that defines media as 'the medium in which people communicate' hence blogs, email, discussion groups are all social media. - Laura Norvig

106 mpg 'air car' creates buzz, questions
September 12 at 5:50 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"You've heard of hybrids, electric cars and vehicles that can run on vegetable oil. But of all the contenders in the quest to produce the ultimate fuel-efficient car, this could be the first one to let you say, "fill it up with air." The compressed air car planned for the U.S. market would be a six-seater, a New York company says. That's the idea behind the compressed air car, which backers say could achieve a fuel economy of 106 miles per gallon. Plenty of skepticism exists, but with many Americans trying to escape sticker shock at the gas pump, the concept is generating buzz. The technology has been the focus of MDI, a European company founded in 1991 by a French inventor and former race car engineer. New York-based Zero Pollution Motors is the first firm to obtain a license from MDI to produce the cars in the United States, pledging to deliver the first models in 2010 at a price tag of less than $18,000" - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet

"We owe our lives to trees. Trees provide far more than furniture and fuel. Everyone finds forests to be beautiful, but not many know how hardworking forests really are. The world’s great forests help make our planet hospitable to life; they purify the air, manage nutrients, capture greenhouse gases, create soil, regulate wind and ocean currents, house two-thirds of the world’s plant and animal species, cool the globe, provide subsistence or jobs to 1.6 billion people, and even play a role in weather systems. And yet, the world’s forests are critically threatened. Though, like amazing threatened species, there are hundreds of endangered forests and other beautiful aspects of nature, the following forests are visually stunning, ecologically precious, unique and simply wondrous and you don’t have to go vegan to help them out." - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
