Tilt-Shift photography is basically the use of of camera movements on small and medium size cameras. In many cases, it refers to tilting the lens relative to the image plane and using a large aperture to achieve a very shallow depth of field. The result is a blurring of parts of the image for de-emphasis purposes and the possible effect of reducing huge objects to miniature models. - Jonathon via Bookmarklet

“Q: Should the govt. try and bail GM out or just let it go?”
October 29 at 10:59 am - Link
Let it go. - Anika Malone
Let it go - Brian Sullivan
Let it go.... - Rich Harris
I'll be consistent and not support this bailout either. - Morton Fox
Bail it out. If they can bail out bankers they can bail out GM. GM's hybrid technology is within six months of breaking some significant ground. It would be ridiculous to let it die. - Karoli
keep in mind it's not just about the 140,000 current employees. About 600,000 people rely on GM pensions. These are retirees that theoretically could lose at least part of their pensions/medical benefits. People who in some cases worked their entire lives for GM and counted on that pension being there to support them in retirement. - Thomas Hawk
Let it go - Atul Arora
Article on GM from the WSJ: http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/200... - Thomas Hawk
Indeed. The pension liability alone without a bailout would break PBGC I think, which would lead to its bailout. Better to keep GM in biz. - Karoli
let it go - Chris W
At least GM actually MAKES things. While it's clear we're not buying those things much right now... - Bob M. Montgomery via twhirl
Let it go. - Derrick
GM had an electric car in the 90's. They took them all back and crushed them. Even though the leasers wanted to buy them. - Chris W
Bailout with conditions. See Karoli above. - Russellreno
let her burn - Mark Frost via twhirl
GM has been dead for years. Close it and sell off the assets to fund the pension fund. GMAC and AC-DELCO are worth a lot. - Mark VandenBerg
I don't think anyone here feels good about the loss of pensions, etc. for the employees. I have some older friends who that has happened to and it's awful. Thing is...is this the best way to spend fed money during these times or are there more pressing issues like public schools closing down, etc? - Rich Harris
It SHOULD let things fall where they will, but it WILL do things to prop up GM. - Alex Scoble CISSP
I will help bail out GM when they bring back the EV1. - Wizetux
@Mark GM sold 51% of it's stake in GMAC already. GM's assets won't cover the pension liabilities. - Cains
We crossed the bridge. Now stand and watch it burn. - Secret Ninja Steven
Reviving GM helps those schools, in my opinion. start with the jobs and revenue back into areas like Michigan and go from there. - Karoli
Thanks, Cains. I missed that. I just see the decisions like the one with FIAT and having to fund Delphi's healthcare/pensions as incredibly poor. Why perpetuate and reward stupidity? - Mark VandenBerg
The pension thing makes it tough but it is a big part of why it costs them so much to make a vehicle. Can we kill GM and bailout the pensions? - Kenton
that would cost waaaay more than the GM bailout. PBGC is hanging by a tenuous thread right now. - Karoli
Bailing out anything validates the deviant behavior that caused the failure in the first place. GM should go out of business if they can't be competitive. - Dave Roth
@Kenton - it seems to me you've got that exactly backwards. I know it sounds mean... but heathcare and pensions are killing GM - Brian Roy
Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. Think of it as the FDIC for pensions. - Karoli
What GM is asking for is less than a month's investment in Iraq. Why should we ignore something that helps our citizens while blowing all that money over there? Those soldiers deserve to come back to jobs. - Karoli
The legacy costs are one reason GM is not competitive, the others are; an inefficient dealer network, a lack of investment during the good years and poor long term planning. Removing weight from a sinking ship will not fix anything, you have to plug the leaks. - Cains
If GM goes it'll take large parts of the economy with it. Thousands of US companies rely on business with GM. - Roberto Bonini
Bill Gross on CNBC, "buy what the govt. is buying," Gross said that the Govt. will let some businesses fail but thinks that they will use TARP money to help other non bank businesses and mentioned autos specifically. CNBC asked him if that meant he was buying Ford and GM and he replied "let's just say we hold some." My guess is that the govt. injects capital into GM before letting it fail, just a guess. They have wide latitude under TARP. - Thomas Hawk
Let it go. If MSFT or Apple were going under, would the gov save them? Hell no. Tons of tech companies went under in 2001, the gov didn't lift a finger. Let them go. - Jason Kaneshiro
Kill -9 - Jonathon
One side of me wants to see the govt step in, but the rational side of me says let it live or die on its own. The govt can't be responsible for babysitting every Corp out there. - Pete Delucchi
Let it go - Brian
no: it's rewarding bad business....well on that count, they did it with the banks, although the car industry has been a lot worse for a lot longer - Duncan Riley
GM has been struggling for years. If they haven't been able to turn it around yet, it's their own fault. Would anyone really miss seeing Pontiacs on the road? Other side of the coin is all the Joe Six Packs it will affect in an already struggling economy. But regardless if it stays or goes, tons of people will end up getting fired. For GM to stay in business, radical measures will need to be taken. - Matt
