Los Angeles-based Republican consultant Mike Murphy calls the choice of Sarah Palin "cynical" and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan says the neophyte's pick means the "race is over." They had finished speaking more carefully on MSNBC and didn't realize their microphones were still live. The audio is on YouTube; I found it via Top of the Ticket. Murphy has worked for McCain and Mitt Romney, among others. - Robert Konigsberg
"With a face recognition feature set to launch at noon PDT Tuesday, Google's Picasa Web Albums will help users label their photos with the names of subjects. That and other changes to the photo-sharing site are joined by a new beta version of the accompanying Picasa 3.0 photo-editing software." - Robert Konigsberg via Bookmarklet
Screen is awesome. One tip, use 'screen -x' to join a session that is already attached to another terminal. I use this at work with multiple terminal windows. It's the best of both worlds, multiple windows for each screen, but when I'm at home I can still attach to all of them with screen -x. - Allen Hutchison
@Allen, Thanks. How is that different from screen -d? Note also the one thing that tutorial sorely lacks is screen -list. But of course, I found it with a little searching. - Robert Konigsberg
I didn't understand allen's explanation either. However the manpage, for once, is actually quite clear: "attach to a not detached screen session. (Multi display mode)." What you type in one terminal magically appears in another window. - Adewale Oshineye
I use that as my vnc when debugging remote systems with other people. - Elias Torres via fftogo
This means I finally have the ability to start a long-running process at work, go home and then periodically check up on the state of the process without disturbing it. - Adewale Oshineye
screen can be wonderful and frustrating at the same time. But it is an essential tool every developer should learn. - Benjamin Golub via fftogo
@Benjamin I wonder how I missed it after using Unix over 20 years. @Elias how do you do that? At work I rely heavily on remote desktop, which makes more sense since my job is to write Eclipse plug-ins -- day to day I need to see someone's UI. But still, I want to know how to use something more lightweight when the time is right. - Robert Konigsberg
@Robert If you are logging in with same user, you start your own screen. Then you ask the other user to type screen -x. Voila. ASCII remote desktop. - Elias Torres
"With thousands of "Family Values"-type conservatives descending on St. Paul, Minnesota, for the Republican National convention, area locals—who are largely Democratic, progressive and, yes, gay—are being asked to do their best to make the visiting Right Wingers feel more at home in a series of fun commercials which urge, "The Republicans Are Coming... Make An Effort."" - Robert Konigsberg via Bookmarklet

"McCain at first seemed happy enough to do the interview. But his mood quickly soured. The McCain on display in the 24-minute interview was prickly, at times abrasive, and determined not to stray off message." - Robert Konigsberg via Bookmarklet
