"What about registering at a used kids clothing store? There is one on Bayview Ave which seems to have great stuff and you can't get more sustainable then reusing....." - leigh himel
"I find it funny that this old media vs. new media debate often ends up with many defending traditional news organizations as more credible in the territories of false reports, innuendo, and gossip. Any "real time" reporting situation will require 'after the fact' assessment and verification. That's whether it's Anderson Cooper blithering on CNN or someone in Mumbai twittering on twitter." - leigh himel
"While i was hiding in university during the last recession, I worked at a company called Telepersonals (today called Lavalife) which had a huge growth period during that economic slowdown. And it wasn't in spite of the recession, it was likely in part BECAUSE OF the recession. People when depressed, apparently like to connect with other people.
No doubt during this economic downturn, many businesses will fail but there will be some that will thrive. The key will be to tap into human truths regarding what people will need (i.e. comfort, security, hope) to figure out what products and services will start to fulfill those needs...." - leigh himel
"Sorry but I'm with JohnDodds here. Lots of stuff has radically changed media - the Internet changed media but the Internet isn't post-media. This term must be stopped before it starts. Sigh." - leigh himel
"I don't have context, but I actually don't like the term post-media at all. What does that mean? Was he meaning post-mass media? Was he implying Yahoo is still a mass media model vs. Google which is some type of new model? That might make more sense but the term media is way to broad to define by the word post and have it make sense..." - leigh himel
Ok...yeah...that is freaking hilarious. The punchline comes out of nowhere. My dad used to do something similar, get you hooked then go "THAT'S NO LADY! THAT'S MY WIFE!" - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
"Does this mean you will have more power or less power to get the horrorscopes back onto the crossword puzzle page?
Very exciting though M...if they are truly committed to doing it and it happens, the Globe could be more than just a powerhouse content provider in Canada but Globally. Looking foward to seeing what you end up doing over there.
(but really, can you get the horrorscopes back on the crossword puzzle page?)" - leigh himel
Sasha, that's exactly what I think myself as it is definitely kind of unrealistic hoping to avoid blogs when they are just everywhere. And again, I think it is simply the approach to the study where people have to share their own opinions directly without tools to see if they actually understand what they are talking about. - Svetlana Gladkova
I agree. It's as much a 'language' issue as anything else - my mom has thought she wasn't reading a blog she was just getting a recipe off the internet - but of course it happened to be on a blog. Lots of people probably don't consider things like popsugar blogs - its just online gossip fun. - leigh himel
Exactly leigh, the example with recipes is a very valid one here. What's more, your mother should not really bother if it is a blog or some recipes directory - she should be able to get the information she needs and that's it. I just wish there was some credible stats that will not rely on people mentioning their own opinions. - Svetlana Gladkova

Sasha, thanks for dropping the link to Steven's post here, I left a comment on the post itself but for some reason did not add it here. - Svetlana Gladkova

Sveta, my pleasure :) Don't you just hate this fragmenation? - Me, myself and I
I honestly do but still hope it will eventually be fixed to a certain extent at least. For now we are working ourselves on collectiong multiple conversations in one place manually :) - Svetlana Gladkova

"So I take it the MBA requirement on your one of the Sr. Marketing positions for one of your portfolio companies i saw a while back isn't really a requirement? I remember thinking i was surprised at the time to see it there. I usually have people tell me why their MBAs aren't an issue vs. actually wanting someone to have one.... :)" - leigh himel
"If there is one constant in building a team it’s that you should be willing to trade a gallon of raw talent for one drop of vision. Someone can always become a better designer, a better coder, a more proficient marketer or a stronger salesman but it’s much harder to teach them how to work with your product, or to turn them into true believers for your brand. When you find someone who feels passionately about your idea, and more importantly see’s the path you are creating for it, set aside the resume and dig a little deeper into what makes them tick. - Daniel J. Pritchett
never met a company that thought this way .. - Gregory Lent
I've heard of this idea as "drinking the kool-aid," but it's equally important to competence and skill. A loyal and enthusiastic employee who is incompetent is just as useless as a talented employee who isn't loyal. - Mark Trapp
I agree with Mark. I think the criteria I set in the last paragraphs express my true aim. They -must- be clever, but on top of that they need these other criteria. @AJ I don't think it is, it is a response to the feeling that intelligence trumps all (lots of traditional engineering firms and software companies with execs who are alumni of these firms believe this). It's a call for a more holistic view in hiring. - Steve Spalding
"Ha! I'm sure you can keep yourself busy with your other 1000 blog feeds. (but i'll tell ya, I almost wrote a post today - so let's see how long it will be before some ranting inclination will take over!)" - leigh himel
“Since Friendfeed's redesign, I get a lot less comments on my items --it doesn't bother me, as I spend less time here now, and maybe that's a good thing to help stay focused.”
where are you spending your time, instead? - Stowe Boyd
I think that because of the economy everyone's interests have shifted a bit. I'm still getting a lot of comments per item, though. But I am seeing interests shift. - Robert Scoble
Stowe - looking forward to seeing you at Defrag. Love your flow thinking. - Hutch Carpenter
Jeremiah, I have the same sentiments. I believe the FriendFeed lists have to do with it. I've been posting more into my lists than on my main feed. I've also curtailing my use with my social networking applications as of late. - imabonehead
Robert - I think there's truth to that. Are people still engaged as much, but commenting elsewhere? Or are they spending less time here? - Hutch Carpenter
Hutch: I think a lot of people have pulled back because of the politics. But there's still a lot of engagement here too. It's just that most people can't be focused online all the time. Oh, and I've noticed that traffic before 9 a.m. is a LOT heavier on the roads. People are scared about their jobs so are goofing off a lot less. - Robert Scoble
I drive down here to Mtn View at 6:00 - 6:30 each morning. Even at that hour, haven't noticed any let-up in traffic. - Hutch Carpenter
Robert nailed it! I am being more "good" now...less FF time (I have today off so I can play on FF...yeah!) - Susan Beebe (Santa Claus)
Maybe FFers are getting better at digging beyond the social media A-list and are spending more attention on smaller players? This thread reminds me of that "A-list still dead" blog post from last week: http://friendfeed.com/e/b2de53... - Daniel J. Pritchett
Daniel: I watch thousands of people on FriendFeed and my observations invalidate your theory. - Robert Scoble
Robert: My 'theory' was just a guess. Your last comment makes you sound like an irritable Skynet btw ;) - Daniel J. Pritchett
Stowe, I'm back on Twitter more. See how long it took me to respond to this? I don't have FF as an open tab all the time now. - Jeremiah Owyang
I can certainly see how people are focused on taking care of business rather than reaching out and making new connections on social networks. I prefer to think that this will be the lasting value that carries me and my career through the next decade, but maybe not everyone is in the same situation. - Daniel J. Pritchett
Jeremiah, maybe it is the way you are using FF. You have always been more active on Twitter, so the pull back into it will be bigger. From my posts, I have not seen much change in terms of likes or comments. I have noticed a lot of change in the memes and politics, they are not nearly as active. - Rob Diana
Jeremiah: I'm also liking a lot fewer of your items lately because social media has just gotten a lot more boring. Lots of reasons for that, but the economy and politics are two. - Robert Scoble
I stopped using Friendfeed since introduction of the list feature. I'm back, briefly, but don't know if I'll stay. I prefer all items in one feed. - rambn
@Rambn: You don't have to make lists. Are you leaving because *other people* might not be reading from an unfiltered stream? This level of customization is exactly why I spend so much more time here than on Twitter. I have about the same number of subscriptions on each network but HERE I can actually make sense of the ones most interesting to me. - Daniel J. Pritchett
"You don't have to make lists" Lists are like gated communities. Sure, some people get beyond the gates, but everyone parties together on Bourbon street in New Orleans. - todd
FF has been feeling a bit cliquey frankly and the discussions seem more like a chat room lately. I find i'm spending less time here as well.... - leigh himel
I have to agree. I'm commenting more, but on a smaller group of people, but it's quite rare to get a run on comments on my own items...just the occasional 'like'. - Chris Nixon
"I hear print is so 1950's.
Actually i think what's really happening is that blogs are becoming so integrated in the digital landscape most people are differentiating anymore. My mom thinks she's never been to a blog ('cepting mine...of course) but then she'll show me a recipe and I'll be like, mom, that's a blog.
As for flamebait, that's too bad. Wired has had some really great content lately. Don't think BS and stupidity really does much for their brand overall (although maybe they are that desperate for some more higher impressions???!?...)" - leigh himel
