I gave up a few years ago and don't miss it at all. Now I use OSX with a Linux vm running under Parallels, and find that the combination works well. Linux is great for server work, but unfortunately the Linux "community" has usability instincts that are the opposite of good. - Paul Buchheit

I've just about run out of hard drive space on my Ubuntu machine (it's the SCP machine for backups/storage). Since I recently moved to a faster Wintel machine, the old Wintel is sitting around waiting to become the new Linux box. I've got a larger hard drive waiting to do it's job. Roberto, the Gmail security stuff is really far afield from my area, but I know the Gmail folks think hard about this. Not much to be done about malware/keyloggers/phishing/same pw at multiple sites. On too-easy password, the tension is between ease of use vs. security. If it's too hard to sign up for Gmail (e.g. require a backup email address), fewer people will do it. But I know the Gmail team thinks about this a lot. - Matt Cutts

It is a pity, cause not everyone has good pw security. And everyone has some important emails in gmail. looking like the only "solution" to this is remove important stuff from gmail. - Roberto Bonini

What if Gmail somehow flagged the account so the user could see it (and the hacker couldn't dismiss it) if someone signed in from an unusual IP? Gmail already has IP tracking at the bottom of the screen, but it is relatively unnoticeable unless you are looking for it. - Kelly Johns

What if setting filters and fowarding could be enabled to require a CAPTCHA of some kind to ensure changes user generated? Or have an option to replace the password every so often with a totally new and unique one you have not used in the past, like windows security policies do. - Roberto Bonini

You can also see the recent account activity information in the footer of GMail. It'll tell you when the last time was it was accessed, which IP address (and if that was on the same computer). If you see anything strange there, be paranoid and change passwords, etc. - John Mueller

You are right John, I think Gmail should somehow bring it to your attention though in a way that a hacker wouldn't be able to get around. Like by sending an email to an alternate account and making you approve that IP for use...otherwise I never even pay attention to the IP at the bottom - Kelly Johns

Kelly, from what Matt wrote it looks like this was not from a "GMail security issue" but rather something more generic (like someone getting to your password). Yes, using https is certainly better, especially when you are worried about the hacker being in your network (say at a public access point, in a hotel, etc), but you still have to stay secure (use a good password, change it regularly, keep your system's software up to date, etc). There are certainly ways to improve it & I'm sure the team is always working on that though. I like your idea of bringing "new IP addresses" to the user's attention, I'll pass that on :). - John Mueller

I mentioned this to Gmail people at Google, but it's unclear how the bad guys added malicious forwarding rules to Gmail. It could also have been password guessing or other low-tech attacks, too. I'm sure that we'll be looking into this, though. - Matt Cutts

Yes, and it works great for conversions, I asked it how many ounces in a pound and it gave it to me fast, the accuracy is amazing -- not to mention how good the local search is with easy to click telephone numbers and everything. Yes, keeping the browser within the app would be great, also the cool thing about the app is when I type one of my contact's name, it pulls them up on the list and I can click to call them -- however, if I speak their name it goes direct to a google search. Google has kept its focus on developing the coolest cutting-edge Internet software possible. Yahoo got distracted by some Old Media people, and, in some respects, tried to become a traditional mainstream media company. Brin and Page exercised better judgment than Yang and Filo. They havent done anything useful with Flickr & delicious! Meanwhile google has innovated with picasa with facial recognition & integration with contacts. Yahoo has all the components, its about tying them together and coming out with useful services. Unfortunately either they dont know how to do it or dont have the back bone to execute on it. Brin and Page have a grand vision of how to best organize all the information in the world. They see how all the pieces fit together. I'm not sure Yang and Filo ever quite reached that level of consciousness. Yahoo voice chat was the awesomest thing I had ever used in the world as far as social interaction at one point in time. Yahoo chat period was awesome. Sure, there was IRC, but this was different. Google does nothing but KILL cool things. Their search engine is great. Earth and Maps are good, everything else? Meh. I wish Yahoo would have kept Live! going. It was a really nice and robust personal broadcast service. Their MyYahoo page is pretty nice too and so many people still use Yahoo! Groups. Flickr is fine as it is ... it just grows. Yahoo has other good, homegrown properties that actually need something doing to, but not Flickr necessarily. - Robert Denton
