surprisingly, trying to bring Gates to a human level doesn't really work - Pete Delucchi
I think what they're getting at is that Windows is like a pair of rigid new shoes that always have to be broken in...and just when they get comfortable and you get used to them...you have to buy new ones and start all over. - Sean McGee
Yes Duncan, you merely have to take it in hand and squeeze it a bunch, work it in, and then shower with it. Then no more blue screen of death! - Ňicķ
Pete, the poor rich bastard as Aspergers... you can't expect too much from him. - Ňicķ
my basic take on it was that everyone thinks of microsoft as "evil" and this is the first cut at being self-deprecating and human. one commercial does not a brand make, and they've got a ton of work to do to get good will back. but what are they supposed to do, talk about how great Vista is? you'd all say they're lying. and for the argument that they need to make better products, that's not a question, but they need to rebuild their image - and that is going to take a lot of work. baby steps... - Morgan
Morgan, Microsoft is telling journalists that this is a positioning statement for Windows. What exactly is the message? Humor works, but bringing the Seinfield nothing idea to a positioning statement is an exercise in futility. There is no message, it's just bizarre. Way to clever by half. - Duncan Riley
Duncan, I guess it depends on what positioning they're trying to address. If it's let the world we're not evil I think it does that. It's out there to be sure, and maybe it doesn't work - but I think Microsoft is in serious trouble from a perception stand point and if they back it out to the highest level the biggest issues they face are that 1) they're evil 2) they're not normal people 3) they make bad products. If they're going for one or two they have to start with something soft... - Morgan
...this may not be ideal but i don't think it's disastrous by any means. And when you're in such a deep hole you can't start by asking for the order, pimping your product ('cause the audience has zero confidence), or coming up with some canned pitch that is disingenuous. I think the next ads are more important - starting from nothing is a tough course to sled. - Morgan
bill gates looking directly at the camera and 'fessing up with humbleness would do more to change perception than a hundred hours of seinfeld. - Gregory Lent
Arean? The Bay Area is Mars?? "Arean worlds can be considered a "mature" terrestrial planet; that is, it has essentially ceased evolving and has remained unchanged for much of its history. These worlds are marked by little to no geological activity, as well as tenuous atmospheres. These worlds tend to be of lower mass, which is by and far the main reason for their characteristics." But Lisa, we ARE from outer space! (It might be a local term :D) - Mona N.
