That's what you do when you're mad and have to sue someone... - Lindsay Donaghe
@Tad -- because the phone was lost and found on McD property and McD employees acted totally inappropriately when they put the photos online. Either McD and/or the restaurant have no policy in place to ensure their customers' privacy in cases like that, or they failed to properly supervise their employees. Either way it's not unreasonable to hold them responsible. Now, whether that's really worth 3 million bucks is a different questions... - Ray Metzen
Ahh, just read the article... yeah, if the employees found in at promised to secure it, then they have good cause to sue. - Lindsay Donaghe

Detectives cried after finding Shannon -

"Two burly detectives with nearly 60 years' experience between them broke down in tears on finding Shannon Matthews. Detective Constables Paul Kettlewell and Nick Townsend described the emotion of recovering the missing child from Michael Donovan's flat after she had been missing for 24 days. The two policemen, with many of their colleagues in the West Yorkshire force, had thought Shannon was dead. So they could hardly believe the little girl was now sitting in the back seat of their police car. Looking at each other, they shook hands and cried "tears of joy" at the unbelievable recovery of the nine-year-old." - RAPatton via Bookmarklet

I think it depends on the degree of severity. If they did it one time, 10+ years ago, regret it a lot, etc. that would be different than someone who has done it in every single relationship, doesn't think it's a very big deal, etc. It would be case-by-case situation for me, rather than an automatic yes/no thing. - Rochelle

I would, because I've been that person. There's a big difference between mid-20s Jon in NYC and 21-year-old Jon living in Italy for a couple years. 5 years isn't huge time-wise, but can contain huge personal growth. I would give a person the benefit of the doubt and let him/her fuck it up later. - Jon Anderson
Might be a good think if they've cheated. It's out of their system and they know the aggro it causes. - Sofia Gkiousou
I would, but I would probably be a bit cautious and guarded for a bit. And like others have said, it would also depend on the degree/quantity/timeframe of when the past offense(s) occurred. - Amanda H.
Plus you should only say "no" if you never cheated in your life. Not once. Never. Not even a peck. (Which I can safely assume is not the majority of the population, even if its not admitted amongst the nouveau puritans) - Sofia Gkiousou
I haven't considered dating since I got married. - Glen Campbell
I only cheated once when I was 16 and never did it again. I think sometimes people cheat once and they feel so much guilt that they jut can't imagine causing that hurt to someone again. However, in the case of my ex..... - Shevonne Polastre
Having been the victim of someone who was cheated on, and looking back on that experience, I'd be open-minded enough to let someone who would share that info with me have a chance. But looking back at my POS ex who was just a small, small man (pun intended), I feel for whoever he ends up dating. - Derrick
Good idea, Glen. - Yolanda
There is a difference between someone who cheats and someone who has cheated. Usually, someone who cheats will do it again and probably has other red flags going on. I'm usually willing to give the benefit of the doubt to someone who has cheated, but cheaters never prosper. - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★

Thomas, I have to agree with you. They have already made big strides toward taking away any reason why someone would want to hack the XB360 for additional features. I agree - the 360 is great on a multitude of levels. Can't say I've ever used a PS3, but I also can't say I ever regretted getting a 360. I use it to listen to music while I do things around the house, I use it to show photos to friends, I use it to watch video from my computer on the big screen, now I get to use it for watching streaming Netflix movies... and of course I use it to school chumps in Halo. - Tom Harrison

XBOX 360 absolutely rocks online.. its what makes it soo much fun! Me and my friends still have the 360 vs PS3 argument, but I just cant justify buying one just to get the typical sony bulls&&t - Jez Arnold
@Thomas. The noise that the damn thing makes will put most people off using it for anything but games. I bet most consumers don't even realise that it can be used as a media player. - Paul Grav
Paul, the new units are far, far, quieter than the original ones. Interestingly, when I sent my two original units in for repair, MSFT returned 2 new ones to me that were *far* quieter than the original units. I think they've got the noise problem down now. - Thomas Hawk
The last one I just received from repair is way way quieter. you don't even notice it running now. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
Also, the new desktop OS lets you rip a game to the hard disk, so it's faster and doesn't activate the DVD drive while playing, which results in a lot less noise and heat. - Kevin Fox
I bought one yesterday, for the game Lips. ;) - Paul Whitaker
@Joel Tanner $7.99 for Gold + $8.99 for Netflix, I would say that's a fine price for watching streaming movies instantly on my TV. That is especially considering I frequently buy PPV movies from cable, which I won't do anymore. The Netflix video quality is very good, and I've watched 3 movies so far without getting any buffering or lag. My only complaint is that there are many, many, many movies that are not available for streaming. - Tom Harrison
I remember back when On Demand channels came out - it was quite apparent "on demand" is the future of entertainment (except of course for things such as sporting events, to which there is a significant draw to watching live). Netflix and Microsoft are absolutely on the right track with this. I'd cancel cable TV if I wasn't the only one in the house. - Tom Harrison
I'd cancel my cable but crappy AT&T forces me to buy TV from them if I want their high speed fiber UVerse internet service. Somehow that seems wrong to me. - Thomas Hawk
that sucks Thomas, what a scam - John Cozen
I know. I totally don't want their TV service but am essentially paying for it anyways because I value faster internet that much. I think that they should let me cancel the TV service and just pay for the internet. - Thomas Hawk
The NXE with Netflix streaming is the best thing to happen to the Xbox in a while. I'm getting so much more use out of it now.. and Rock Band 2 is awesome. The starting price of $200 for the Xbox 360 Arcade must have opened a lot of eyes this holiday season. - Rodfather
I've heard you can get a u-verse package, then cancel the TV and keep the internet. Haven't been willing to try it myself though. - invariant
I'm not surprised...I've played both and I love my Xbox 360 even with the latest goofy update that 'Wii-ified' with silly avatar crap...which I ignore. I think Sony just blew it, plain and simple, with that launch. - Rich Harris

Left-handed children 'do badly at school' -

"Gap in performance particularly wide among girls, study show. Children who are left-handed or ambidextrous perform worse at school than right-handers, according to a study of national curriculum test results. Left-handed girls fare worse than boys: while left-handers from both sexes start off performing worse, girls fail to catch up with their right-handed peers during later school life. Those who are ambidextrous from both sexes also fail to bridge the gap in performance, according to the study carried out by researchers from the University of Bristol for the Economic and Social Research Council. The researchers, who looked at the results of more than 10,000 children, reveal that left-handers perform less well in IQ tests and tests for 11- and 14-year-olds." - RAPatton via Bookmarklet

Well - if they're using IQ as the measurement tool then this is all junk. My mother said I started out ambidextrous. My pediatrician told her to encourage me to pick a hand and stick with it. I'm not sure if I chose the right hand, or if I was helped along. I was not attentive in school. Good lord, Heather, that sounds good. Sounds like something I should make...to take *photos* of course. I'd never eat it. Nope. *licks fingers* Never. - Derrick
Sounds great Heather. You're making me hungry. - Daryl aka Lil Trumpet Boy
Yummmmm - Adriana

Kaia, do you deliver? - Derrick

Make sure you wear your Eatin' Pants when I make you dinner, D. =) - Orphan Spinster Librarian
501's or Dickies are part of my uniform, but when it's time to relax, I put on my kick-its: elastic waist track pants, complete with racing stripes. - Derrick

“"One of the reasons that Prohibition ended 75 years ago was the urgent need for tax receipts during the Great Depression. As we enter another major collapse, the US government could (should) consider legalizing and taxing other popular vices such as marijuana, cocaine and prostitution."”

from Richard Russell: continues. "... like they tax alcohol and cigarettes. Of course we would also save the unbelievable amounts of money we throw away trying to stop people from engaging in these vices, usually making the activity more dangerous in the process. - Thomas Hawk
"selling is legal, and sex is legal, so why isn't selling sex legal?" George Carlin - Thomas Hawk
"Over the past 10-15 years, despite interventions at every point in the supply chain, cocaine and heroin consumption has been rising, prices falling and drugs have continued to reach users. Government interventions against the drug business are a cost of business, rather than a substantive threat to the industry's viability." -- Tony Blair - Thomas Hawk
Good idea, but I think there would be a significant uphill battle with the religious lobby against legalizing any of these activities or substances. - Jeff P. Henderson
And online gambling. - Joey Gibson
Prostitution in particular seems like a no brainer. As long as it is kept safe and all participants are adults I fail to see how it will harm anyone, or effect anyone who is not involved. - Jeff P. Henderson
Legalized prostitution seems to be working quite well in Nevada. - Jeff P. Henderson
How about a national lottery? The prize: Foreclosed on homes! - Jason Kaneshiro
Definition of gambling: "A tax on those who don't understand money." But sure, online gambling ought to be legal and taxed too. - Thomas Hawk
Or photography, a vice if ever there was one. - Tom Kimmerer
@Tom, last time I checked, Photography was legal ;-) - Jeff P. Henderson
and hard to tax. - Kevin Fox
Oh please. You'd just buy over the internet to evade sales taxes anyway. - Jake Rome
good point Jake. I suppose that they could figure out a way to tax it though. Aren't alcohol and smokes still taxed if you buy them on the internet? - Thomas Hawk
+1 Joey - studies have shown the US Gov. could collect $3 BILLION on taxes on online gaming if it's regulated and taxed. Instead the US Gov. is attempting to ban it by forcing the struggling banking industry to block 'unlawful internet gambling' - but they don't define what 'unlawful internet gambling' is!! - Ken Gidley
Many places can't even receive alcohol through the mail. It's super annoying for wine in many states. - Chris White
Yes they are, Thomas. My father sells cigars and he's responsible for paying all tobacco taxes on his product, not the consumer. In fact, tobacco products cannot be sold until the tax has been paid on them. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
I would be all for this, IF some of the money was also designated to treatment on demand for those who need it. IT is a sorry state that we are in now, where you have to wait months for treatment, but you can go to jail right away for using. - Beth K
Not only can the government make money on taxes on these things, they can save money by not having to pay to incarcerate people. The savings alone would make it worth it. - April Russo
Between the human costs (lives destroyed, families wrecked), the direct cost of imprisonment (highest incarceration rate in the world), the cost of kneecapping the potential economic productivity of those convicts, the law enforcement costs, the opportunity costs of lost law enforcement resources, *and* the failure to utilize a potential tax base, the war on drugs is our most disastrous and financially ruinous failed war. - Eric P
Eric, I agree, so then where are the politicians out there promoting this? Other than comments made earlier this year by failed Democratic Presidential Candidate Mike Gravel, I've heard very little from any politician on these matters. Why isn't Obama talking about this? - Thomas Hawk
I agree except for the cocaine part. - Ruchira S. Datta
Interesting note: The 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which repealed prohibition, was ratified in 1933, and the state that cast the deciding vote in ratifying this amendment was—of all states—Utah. - Jason Shultz
Utah, where you still can't homebrew... at least they got ratification of the 21st Amendment right, I guess. - Bob M. Montgomery via twhirl
Something tells me this isn't even on Obama's economic team's radar. My cynicism tells me the pharmaceutical and religious industrial complexes would never allow this to happen, but my idealism is holding out hope for at least decriminalization. - Pete Delucchi
@Thomas: Because it's unpopular. No politician - least of all a Democratic one, wants to be seen as "soft of crime" (whatever the hell that means). It's an issue that seems obvious to rational thinkers, but to the vast majority of the population, ending the war on drugs is tantamount to the government teaching first graders how to use crack cocaine. We're making baby steps towards marijuana legalization, but the general public just isn't there for "hard" drugs. - Eric P
In short, if we want it to change it'll take a massive grassroots effort and a campaign to educate the public on the folly of treating drugs as a criminal rather than medical problem, and minimally reach the point where the public doesn't punish politicians who might call for an end to this war. - Eric P
We'll run out of money, and then we'll have to start letting people out of jail. Marijuana users and sellers will probably come out before rapists and murderers. - Chris White
at the very least, I simply don't understand why Prostitution is still illegal in the US. - Duncan Riley
they did legalized prostitution in Germany, tho not sure whether they thought it well -- one might find himself unemployed, only to face stark choice between cut-off unemployment benefits and going to now-legal-and-moral-by-law job offered... - silpol
There are plenty of good reasons for keeping prostitution illegal, on a moral level, for instance, it is simply the case the legal or illegal, prostitution is a pretty terrible profession, with a ton of potential for abuse. It may be inevitable, that doesn't mean we have to like it. - Jamelle
