haha yes, liked just for the captions alone :) - Dennis Jackson
I'm really tired of Apple getting a bad wrap for having a higher quality product. As an apple enthusiasts it gets to me. - orionstarr
It's not that they have a higher quality, it's that most malware writers are on Windows machines. It's the same reason Linux viruses are rare, too. Read the article, the author nails it. - Mona N.
Wait, what Mona? That's only one reason: "But suppose this was some bizarro world where OS X was king. Would Microsoft run ads about how virus-plagued OS X was? Well, it would still be more prudent to run anti-virus software, since there'd be a lot more thrown crap thrown at the Mac OS, but if malware acted mostly like it does today, it likely wouldn't have the same impact as it did on Windows pre-Vista.
A lot of that is because of the way permissions work in OS X vs. Windows. Basically, Unix-based systems are architected so that they require administrator privileges to modify the OS and are traditionally more strict in enforcing them. - Roshan Vyas
Yes, the design and structures are completely different - but I wasn't going to flap my gums since I am definitely no expert on OS X and or Linux. ;) - Mona N.
via IM
you'll find that the kernels of windows, linux and osx are pretty much water tight, almost 100% of exploits now adays are taking advantage of 3rd party software with the threats discovered valid across all 3 platforms. Long gone are the days where something like natchi or the one that attacked LSASS in windows would spread from windows box to windows box on a network. In fact there are a hell of a lot of them that rely upon the user to give them the OK - which shows up the one great threat endemic to all ;) - alphaxion
Mona, I don't buy the market share argument, though I hear a lot of people make it. Unix-based malware isn't proportional to market share; it's nearly non-existent. And Unix isn't all that great from a security architecture point of view. It's just that Windows is worse. - Bruce Lewis
via fftogo
Well think about it this way. Larger market share = more users = higher probability of bored people creating viruses / malware. - Mona N.
via IM
Viruses aren't really created out of boredom that often. Nowadays it's all about the botnets and monies. =) - Daniel Bruce
Well isn't the camry the most selling car in U.S.? Does that make it better than a BMW? Don't think so, just the cheap alternative. The world may own mostly windows, doesn't make it better - orionstarr
Doesn't make it worse, either. Just different. - Jordan Hofker
Don't open attachments that come in spam, and don't download strange stuff from the internet, and you don't have to worry about viruses. And AV software is such a resource hog that it practically qualifies as a virus itself. I scan my system now and then just to confirm I'm virus free (never found one), but I'll be damned if I leave that stuff installed and running. - Eric P
mona: actually you'll find the VX'ers who used to make viruses for (in)fame(y) or to prove a point have all but died out, now the malware scene is full of people making them for commercial gain hence why many of them are attempts at stealing financial details and/or cons to make you pay money for crapware. It's basic economics - windows has the greater number of gullible users ergo more money to be made. - alphaxion
I like when people complain about AV software being a resource hog (NOD32? a resource hog? nope) but then have no problem running a browser, Firefox, that often will happily eat up 300 megs of RAM with just a couple of tabs open. - Akiva Moskovitz
I think the problem is a browser can be the place where you actually get all your work done. AV is just something running just in case something happens. You aren't actually doing anything with it. - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
Can we stop this? People just want to fight about windows vs. pc. It gets to me. - orionstarr
@mona, those captions are actually RED. ;-) - .LAG
People who write malware to get a feeling of power would love to write something that affects Unix-based systems. People still remember the 1988 Morris worm, while the horde of Windows malware is mostly forgotten. Taking either the OSX community or the Linux community down a peg would be an enormous ego boost to a malware writer. - Bruce Lewis
via fftogo
orionstarr: There's a Hide button right there ^ =) Personally I find that as long as you have a decent firewall (a NAT router works just as well) and common sense, you should be fine. I haven't had a virus on any of my computers (windows or not) and I never run AV. - Daniel Bruce
How are virus spread? By e-mail downloads? - orionstarr
E-mail attachments/links, infected files on P2P networks, drive-by downloads on infected sites, subversive software (registry cleaners are a prime suspect), and probably hundreds of other methods. - Daniel Bruce
I had a virus on my computer, but I was being careless and I downloaded stuff I had no business downloading. I used to want to write a virus because the very idea of a living program was freaking cool to me. Never actually did it though. - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
you'll notice the majority of these infection points rely upon the user to do most of the leg work. The few that don't either use flaws in browsers (predominantly flaws in flash to be specific) or rootkit tech that "cloaks" itself. - alphaxion
Yeah, self-spreading worms aren't that common anymore, the most prevalent virus these days are trojans which, really, are platform-agnostic to some degree. - Daniel Bruce
A trojan is not a type of virus. Neither are most platform-agnostic. - Tanath
Tanath, the vast majority of existing types of malware for Windows are trojans, not viruses. Yet that doesn't stop people talking of Windows having a big "virus" problem. And there's very little to stop people writing highly-effective (and highly damaging) trojans for Mac OS X. - Ian Betteridge
I remember watching code red do a driveby login attempt on my FTP server using all the standard IIS and windows guest accounts.. was funny cause I don't use IIS for FTP because it's one of the most abominable implementations of an FTP server ever created >.< - alphaxion
Ian, it used to have a big virus problem; and people are ignorant. The name stuck. Virus is synonymous with malware to many people. - Tanath
So I had to replace my keyboard yesterday (a couple of keys died) and I purchased the new flat key Apple model (with chord...I need a numeric keypad). I've been typing since I was 8, so I'm a traditionalist with keyboards, and I thought I might not like it. 24 hours in, and seriously the best keyboard I've ever owned. - Duncan Riley

This keyboard is really nice to use, very smooth - Darren Heydon
I want to get one like that as well ... really like the profile .. but finding one at a reasonable price for a PC isn't that easy - Steven Hodson
I went with the cordless, and I'd agree - the best I've ever owned. - l0ckergn0me
I spent 2 days on a friends Mac, ever since I've been using the apple keyboard. Very nice. The mouse...not so much. - Joe Pierce
I love the numberless wireless keyboard but find myself going back to the standard one every now and then. When Apple gets it right, there's nothing else even close. - Nice Fish Films
WANT WANT WANT WANT!!! I wish my school district would get these instead of the crappy, annoying iMac keyboards they have. I make three times as many mistakes on the ones they got than on normal PC keyboards (on which I make three times as many mistakes as laptops, but that's beside the point). I'm also not the only one. I dislike being without a right mouse button (and a few computers have mice without the scroll ball), but... Decent keyboard = more important. - Voyagerfan5761
via fftogo
absolutely with you there Duncan, gorgeous piece of kit & works wonderfully - Zee.
@l0ckergn0me my first job when I left school (and 6mths of a BA that bored me shitless so I quit) was with a Merchant Bank and one of my jobs was to hard code numbers every day. Since then I nearly exclusively use the numeric keypad for number entry...I liked the cordless, but I need my numbers - Duncan Riley
Voyagerfan5761, depending on which Apple mice you are talking about, you can enable a right button through System Preferences. - Chris White
Love it! Wish there was a wireless with numpad though. - invariant
@Chris: I'm talking about the -- what are they called? -- mighty mouse. One big button. Can I still do it? (Every time I log in; no saving of settings...) - Voyagerfan5761
via fftogo
invanriant, agreed, and its dumb that Apple doesn't offer it. - Voyagerfan5761, I actually ended up liking my old Apple keyboard. I stuck with a Logitech Win keyboard for the first 6 months, then I decided to "TRY THAT" keyboard, and I stuck with it ever since. Having said that, I've since purchased a top of the range Logitech mouse, and you'll pry that from my cold dead hands - Duncan Riley
Which Logitech? I generally think the buttons on Logitechs need a bit too much force to press, but I'm getting a little tired of the scroll ball on the mightymo getting clogged up. - invariant
@Duncan: Was "that" keyboard the kind sheathed in transparent plastic with white keys, a flat bottom, and USB port on the back? Those are the ones I'm referring to. - Voyagerfan5761

Sorry but nothing beats the: Microsoft Natural Ergo Keyboard 4000, I can type on that thing for days and fingers feel great. The Apple full keyboard is really nice but I need an ergonomic keyboard, and I love having all the shortcut keys. I want to use a keyboard for everything I do. Same goes for mouse the Mighty Mouse is nice, but Logitech MX Revolution is perfect. - Justin Yost
@Voyagerfan5761 yes, that's the one sitting in my garbage bin at the moment :-) - Duncan Riley
Justin: ergo keyboards are hell for people like me who are "self taught" typists. In my case, different fingers might hit the same key depending on what I'm typing (and I think this helps me avoid the RSI problems true touch typists have btw). And now Microsoft is making even their non-ergo keyboards wavy. That's just a frustration to me. - invariant
I'm using the same Apple keyboard at work on a Lenovo T61. The keys on the Lenovo are terrible and it feels like I can type faster on the apple keyboard. This keyboard will follow me for many years - Dennis Bjørn Petersen
via twhirl
@invariant: Agreed about ergo keyboards. @Duncan: Glad I'm not alone. :) - Voyagerfan5761

Very, very recommended. Like, insanely recommended - best keyboard I've owned (wireless version), by far. And I loved my Microsoft Internet Pro keyboards. Nothing comes close to either the one Duncan has or the wireless one - nothing. It's a dream. I type SOOOOOOOOOOOOO fast on this, compared to other keyboards. I also happen to love the Mighty Mouse, so... :) - l0ckergn0me
i wish they had a trackball version of the mighty mouse - jerobins
I have the Bluetooth version w/o numeric keypad, and, I have to agree, it's the best keyboard I've ever used. - Glen Campbell
I didn't think I would like it either, but I love it too... and my mighty mouse. - Carmen
My 4 month-old black MacBook has a smaller version of your keyboard and I love it for its low-profile, highly tactile feel. I had my Mac keyboard converted to the DVORAK keyboard layout, which I've been using for the past 4 years. It's really better than QWERTY any day! I can type much faster and with less errors compared to the full-size keyboard I had with my Windows box. The bluetooth Mighty Mouse sure beats using the trackpad, and has convenient programmable buttons to bring up Expose and Dashboard. - Siddharth Deb
I had a similar experience... was worried I'd hate it and ended up loving the new keyboard. (wired version, have to have the numeric keypad) - mikepk
One place to put & change userpics - great idea for people who like to change them often ) Service can give userpics in all sizes you qant so it's cool. - Я ВАС СОВСЕМ НЕ ПОНИМАЮ

"Farewell sweat TechCrunch IT" - sweat kinda works in a weird way, but maybe you meant sweet? - Hutch Carpenter
for those wondering if it is shut as there's no official announcement: type techcrunchit.com into a browser. Also heard that Calley is no longer at TC as well. Changes happening by the sound of it. - Duncan Riley

So does this mean a spot opens up on the Techmeme Leaderboard for you, Duncan? - Cyndy
I was surprised to see the blog launch considering all guest posts on techcrunch.com from Steve Gillmore before Techcrunchit were getting considerable flak about the long winded and abstract writing style that was used. - Adam Helweh
Cyndy, that spot will be reserved for another Arrington/ Gabe sycophant :-) - Duncan Riley

FSG has the power to bring blogs back from the dead?? - Cyndy
Guys they have only been around for like 60 days and had 50,000 uniques according to Compete.com... I wish I had that kind of traction. If they hadn't used the TC brand someone (me and a group) would have picked it up for sure. That was a great start. Why did they not continue I wonder? Duncan help me out you know how the big man thinks more than any of us - Roger Kondrat
Roger, you would have that kind of traction if TechCrunch crosslinked with every article you wrote. ;) - Cyndy
Two problems. Nik + SG would have been paid...well Nik definitely but both were named editors so presume both. Say 80-100k yr for an editor, maybe total if they split it + other writers for the site (allocated expenses, even if they were shared between sites). 50k uniques over 2 months doesn't even come remotely close to covering expenses. Arrington is a tight arse who hates spending money. My guess is that the site wasn't growing quickly enough and they decided to cut their losses now - Duncan Riley
It's also not a space Arrington would want to necessarily own either, after all there's no magical pot of gold nor any competitor he wants to destroy, so where as CrunchGear was sustained at a loss for a long time (and could well still be losing money) there was no reason for TCIT to do so. Pure business decision from him. - Duncan Riley
also there's the sucker aspect. My guess is that it wasn't his idea to start with, that Nik cooked it up and sold it to him, with SG's support. Arrington has always had poor judgement with investments and happily spends money to support friends. Maybe charity would be the better definition - Duncan Riley
It's redirecting back to TechCrunch again - Glenn Slaven
Completely gone from all the menus too now - Glenn Slaven
bizarre, it's like ZOMG, someone noticed! What should we do! - Duncan Riley
TCIT is an idea that has been floating around for some time in Arringtonland, I was even involved with some very early discussions (nixed when Gillmor noticed I was being included in group emails). I wouldn't be quite so quick to deadpool it, but one wonders if any such closure might be related to acquisition discussions which are coming to a head. - Paul Montgomery
Does this mean the TechCrunch Tablet is deadpool'd too? - Paul Montgomery
Paul, interesting question given the initial drive came out of TCIT. - Duncan Riley
With all due respect to Duncan, I think it opens a spot for Cyndy .... (he ducks) - Charlie Anzman
outside looking in, the guy has a heart, is loyal to friends, has that difficult combination of thin skin and strong character, and when he cuts, it's over. he has a good product, a good writing voice, and, hey, a job that he created that is fun and furiously difficult. i thought the tablet a brilliant idea, that might have flown enough to cover expenses. plus the pr and learning curve. bottom line, on the side of light. - Gregory Lent
it is again redirecting. Duncan any informed guesses on the reason for closure :-). Bye the way I posted about no new articles on techcrunchit on friendfeed about 3 days back. - Sidharth Dassani
No kidding Paul, what does this mean for the iCrunch? - Pat Hawks
Sidharth, apol, I got a direct tip on it today. My guess is that it simply didn't find enough traffic. - Duncan Riley

I think this is one of those songs that once it comes on you just have to dance. - James Ferguson
It was released at the wrong time of the year. If it had been released in the spring (i.e. right before the summer), it would have been BIG. HUGE. As in generation-defining huge. As in "where were you when you first heard 'Hey Ya'?" huge. It's the perfect summer hit. - Ontario Emperor
Well, as a single, it sold 3 million copies and spent 9 weeks at #1. That's pretty huge. Not Mariah Carey chart dominance levels but nobody but her does that anymore. - Jason Toney
Is she still popular again? I am so out of touch *chuckle* - Michael W. May
Well, her 2008 single "touch my body" was moderately successful but her 2005 song "We Belong Together" was (and probably still is at weddings and engagement parties) a ridiculous smash. 14 weeks at #1 and the biggest single of her career (which is saying an awful lot). - Jason Toney
It's a difficult issue. Merging disjoint conversations can be a mess (I think Paul & Robert Scoble discussed this 1-2 months ago). Often the only comment on a post is the Del.icio.us description which was imported. They are not really part of a "conversation". It would be nice to see a threaded mix of threads. Moopz http://moopz.com is one attempt at thread consolidation. - Mitchell Tsai
This one has separate 'likes,' the second one being Scoble's bookmark. The way I see it, comments from del.ico.us et al should be treated like a type of trackback. It works pretty well in a blog, why not here. These duplicates are the biggest cause of pollution on FriendFeed and it gets worse the more people you follow. - Vincent van Wylick
Here's the scope of the issue http://friendfeed.com/search?q... There are about 60 posts already on FriendFeed. Main one is Hutch Carpenter's (41 likes, 25 comments) http://friendfeed.com/e/bf9199... but 5 other posts with comments. Combining other comments into this main post with 25 comments would be a mess. - Mitchell Tsai
The situation is much improved with the release of FF's "Show best of:" feature. Before that conversations sometimes fragmented into 4-10 places, and I would run around trying to follow. Now it usually sticks to the top 1-2 places, with a few tiny 1-3 liners in other spots. --- Unless something big like "Cuil" hits the fan. - Mitchell Tsai
With Cuil, http://friendfeed.com/search?q... We've already got over 400 posts in the last 24 hours, and I can't even see all of them due to the "page 11 & item #0-399" limitation. Merging those would be a nightmare. - Mitchell Tsai
