just about to hit critical mass methinks. We saw it with youtube, with myspace, then facebook. Time for Twitter to enter the global vocabulary. - linkman77
Well, I walk a lot in SF and this has yet to have you walk through a couple of very cool parks downtown, so I'm not 100% into it, but very glad in general that they added it! makes it more of a "as the crow flies" functionality whihc I think Is good. I'm picky :) This site rocks: Google Pedometer: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com - anna
Good golly, I was waiting for a good reason to walk more, I guess this it! All Hail Google! - Patrick
I'd love to get it, but UVerse still isn't available here. My DSL connection goes down whenever we have a thunderstorm. - Mike Hussein Cohen
Glad it's working for ya! Hawaiian Tel keeps talking about fiber to the home, but they're losing landline subscribers fast and furious. It can't be that hard on an island. http://billso.com/hawaiian-tel... - Bill Sodeman
First thing I did was load my 10 faves or more set on Flickr which has over 2,000 photos in it to see how fast it would load 2,000+ thumbnails at once. Answer, very fast, maybe 10 seconds. The other thing is Flickr used to hang on certain thumbnails on large thumbnail pages for me, but not anymore, everything loads perfectly now even on very intensive pages full of images. I love it. Have to go play with the TV part of it next. - Thomas Hawk
Sounds wonderful Thomas. Can't wait to visit at your house. - Todd Jordan
I'm wanting to install fiber as soon as its available in my area, I had it in utah and it was amazing... A true godsend...so fast...*drools..* - Patrick
whoa, whoa, whoa, you signed up for the FiOS TV service, too? That seems like a Thomas Hawk from an alternate reality. Though I hear they have a decent four tuner HD DVR. Jealous -- it may be years before its available where I am in SF. - Robert Seidman
How does the speed compare to cable? I've heard of dropout issues with others in my neighborhood that switched to Uverse - keep us updated. - James Hull
My Uverse isn't as fast as my Time Warner was on the internet side, but with 2-3x as many HD channels that just WORK every time and don't pixelate, I'm in love. - Blake
My inlaws just got it. Supposed to be available at my house in November! :) - cjmart
Congrats Thomas! Fast is more fun. We upgraded our TimeWarner and it is pretty consistently 15download/1upload now. Don't know if we can get Fiber yet where I live in KC. - Johnny Sewell
Congrats and welcome to 'real' broadband. I've been loving life since the beginning of this year with my Comcast Business class connection. Right now during prime evening time, I'm getting about 14Mb down and 1.5Mb up. Average is 16-18Mb down. I've seen it go as high as 24Mb down in the early AM!! - Jeff P. Henderson
Good stuff...I've had it down in San Jose for a few months. It is pretty nice. - Stephen Shelton
starting a betting pool, thomashawks GB usage the first month ... over or under 50? - Gregory Lent
we're suppose to be getting FiOS in our building soon, but they said that it would be ready last month.... - nick carrasco
@Thomas: Just wondering if you are still liking your Uverse connection. I'm supposed to have it installed on Friday but I thought I'd get your opinion one last time - if you've got the time, thanks! - James Hull
James, I absolutely love the faster internet, a tremendous improvement over DSL. I watch very little tv but you can't get the higher speed fiber without it. TV is ok, I think an ota hd signal is better quality hd than uverse. - Thomas Hawk
Friendfeed's growth is starting to slow. I am not adding as many followers as I did in May and June. And this chart on GTrends seems to back up my hypothesis. - Steve Rubel
via Bookmarklet
That trend could be no worse than April 08. When does it break out of the tech echo chamber? Get some (hollywood) celebrities in here - then watch the ascent again. - tagami
Except that it doubled from June to July... show me 2 - 3 units of slowing then I'll pay attention - Johnny Worthington
"starting to slow" - from a downward curve of 3 days? on the flipside, i've said all along that ff has no mainstream appeal while twitter does. - Allen Stern
Steve, there are at least 7 other points on this chart with a down tick. I think it's a little early to call this. Plus, summer sucks for growth. I've seen a decrease in everything from # of stories in my RSS reader and traffic for tvbythenumbers.com (blog) not only slowed since June, it dropped in the 30%-50% range. It's too early to call it a success, but it also too early to comment on growth stalling too. - Robert Seidman
The chart by the way looks like Loch Ness! - Steve Rubel
One possibility is that users are re-considering the need to directly subscribe to mega-posters / super-users. Instead, they figure the best stuff posted by them will become visible to them through the Friend of Friend feature. - Aviv
oh man you all need "correlation does not equal causation" t-shirts...but it does look like Nessie! - Robert Seidman
I was just thinking today that it would be nice to have an FF widget that you could install on your website to encourage your readers to have conversations and post their own material on FF. Something like that could expand its audience. - John Budnik
Twitter truly is a phenomenon - but all competers can't expect the same growth, I'm sure that friendfeed will do something new to bring some more growth, or perhaps a competitor will show up to knock it's socks off. Perhaps everyone is just on vacation, eh? - Patrick
Staggeringly small numbers - not surprising. To take full advantage you need to be a user of other API'd sites or know about them. That's a lot of assumed knowledge. - Sean Kelly
Sean, to that point I'm not really sure exactly what trends tracks. Its off (and lower) by a ton for my site based on numbers provided by other Google services (GA and feedburner). But FriendFeed is still a very small niche for now. - Robert Seidman
@Robert you could be right - seasonality. But does seasonality matter the way it used to now that alot of us have iPhones? - Steve Rubel
Steve, yes it matters because there may be nearing 10 million worldwide with iPhones, but that's a rounding error when it comes to total population who access the web. talk to whoever has the stats for AdAge.com and compare August 4ths stats vs. the first Monday in May... - Robert Seidman
that said, I think FriendFeed will be seriously challenged in terms of growth. As designed I think it highly likely that It's too much for most people to deal with. so they won't. - Robert Seidman
David, I find FF far superior to Plurk. I can't aggregate my feeds on Plurk or have conversations. Actually, I'm still trying to figure out what Plurk is good for (seriously, I have friends on there and it just seems like a more complicated version of FB). - John Budnik
Are we looking at the same graph? The chart shows traffic growing about 40-50% over the couple weeks leading up to a slight decline around 4th of July weekend. A few days isn't a trend. I don't see FF going mainstream in it's current form, but I do think you'll see that line continue to move up and to the right for a while longer. - Joe Lazarus
That's a graph of exponential growth -- adoption is *accelerating*. With just 50K dailies there's lots more upside potential. - Sprague D
Um, the "drop" isn't even a full 1% and not even a full two weeks of data. Meaningless dip until we get all of July's data. The median shows parabolic curve. I think you need to take that remedial stats class, again. - Dread Pirate PJ
I wouldnt: use Google Trends to track site growth. Compete.com is a better source. - Mike Reynolds
I don't know... that looks like a pretty good growth curve to me. And last time I checked it was skyrocketing up Alexa (with all grains of salt thrown in there) - Eric Berlin
Please, this is a small tick after a large leap, with an overall trend of growth. Not even worth mentioning yet. - Tanath
It's had similar drops throughout it's rise so I don't think that is too significant! - Joe Dawson (beta)
Always a problem, especially with a 7-month old and a wife that doesn't understand blogging and thinks I'm not working half the time. :) - David Risley
I'm far from being a "blogger" as I just started myself, but personally I'm having trouble putting time into it between work, photography (my main focus), and personal life. I'm curious to see how others manage their time as well. - Justin Korn
I created a schedule in GCal. I include times to read other blogs and write for my own blogs. I attempt to stick to the calendar. I was thinking of using Klok for actually timing myself, but it seems like overkill. I need GCal to notify me better (I don't have SMS right now). - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
Don't all bloggers face time management issues? - Summer
Meticulous scheduling and juggling. Occasional the balls land on my head. Since I became a mom, I've somehow learned to manage to do even more than I did before. I think I sleep less. - cartoongoddess
David - I can definitely relate to the wife not understanding, she's more understanding as I bring home bigger paychecks monthly though, of course. - Patrick
Justin - we each gotta start somewhere - if you keep doing it, you'll be successful, staying focused is the hard part. - Patrick
Sorry, I don't really have time to explain. Maybe later. - Aldon Hynes
Summer- I know I suffer from information overload and thus time management dysfunction. I'm putting together an ebook on time management for bloggers, and looking for some input from the community on this issue - Patrick
Patrick: Totally agree. I'm still trying to find my voice right now :) - Justin Korn
I was taught a phrase a few years ago to help with time management, PEP. PEP stands for Personal, Educational, and Professional. Make sure each part is equally divided - and you will be in balance. Take care of your health, learn something new everyday, and help others. Balance the three and you'll always have PEP. - LPH™
Well, I simply just ignore my blog until I have the time to post to it. - possible248
@cartoongoddess & Rahsheen - I'm beginning to think along these lines, today in church I came up with a schedule for my blogging, which even includes how many minutes I'm going to spend looking at my reader, how many adding friends on facebook / twitter, how many posting to forums / blogs, and a plan to write 1 pillar article a day, and 2-3 smaller posts. Also planning to spend about 30 minutes on stumbleupon stumbling and reviewing. - Patrick
@LPH Thanks for that tip - I'll definitely have to incorporate it into my time management overhaul, this week. - Patrick
I just stopped sleeping ;). I recently got into the whole 'GTD' concept and have found it to be a great way of managing my ridiculous juggling of two jobs and all of the craziness that it entails. I suggest downloading the audio book "Getting Things Done' by David Allen. It's fairly quick (maybe 4 hours or so) and will really help you develop a smarter way of approaching time and task management. I now use OmniFocus on my Mac and iPhone which are both great tools to implement the system. - Lon Seidman
Blog about what you're really interested in, to where it doesn't feel like work. You'll write faster and enjoy blogging way, way, way more. - Jason Kaneshiro
Jason Kaneshiro - the problem I was talking about though is - there are a ton of distractions online, sometimes you almost forget to keep writing your blog posts, at least I find myself doing this...I'll spend too much time in my feed reader starring items and my time is up and I don't get to write my post, etc... - Patrick
Lon - I'll have to listen to that book. Thanks for the tip. - Patrick
Ok, I'm off to bed for now - but keep sending your suggestions I'm compiling information for some training, blog posts, podcasts, etc on blog time management. I appreciate all your comments! - Patrick
Patrick: I posted a tweet like this the other night... http://snurl.com/3284e "Getting tough to balance online and offline life. Anyone have good time management tips to share?” It's good that you've been able to stimulate some discussion and get some ideas. I'm working on my time management issues trying to prioritize things. I read a lot of RSS feeds and I'm always adding more. I found this post on Mashable to be very helpful "How to Track 500 Business Blogs in 10 Minutes a Day" http://snurl.com/32883 - Larry Kless
Aside from managing online time efficiently I'm also trying to balance my online and offline life. Jim Kukral talked about this a while back on this post.. http://www.jimkukral.com/is-yo... - Larry Kless
Being one of the great mass of blogger who don't make their living from blogging, it's a constant struggle. Essentially, I'm a writer. Always have been. Writing it like breathing for me. Blogging is an outlet for that. Perhaps the best I've found. But I'm not a writer at work. It just isn't what I get paid to do. I'm not a writer at home, because writing is a solitary act, which requires separating from my family. So, I can't be a writer and be a good employee or a good husband and father, most of the time. - Terrance
This is a great post on twitter, although I think he accidently forgot my name on the name of people to follow on twitter, lol - just kidding. - Patrick
