Cruel end for an L.A. homeless man - Los Angeles Times

""He was Mr. John," she cried out in Spanish. "I don't even speak English, but I would say, 'Hi, Mr. John, happy today?' " The homeless man would smile and nod, she said. "Ah, no! It is better than the Star Wars Prequels, but it still isn't a proper Indiana Jones Film. Raiders of the Lost Ark a perfect film, and watching that the night before this, really cast it in a harsh light. Although the Karen Allen scenes are very nice in this one. - RAPatton

"I know how to get to paradise -- in this life, anyway. It lies atop a hill about 60 miles north of Rome where a gentleman-cardinal built a garden in the 16th century. His architects created it from water and stone, green leaves and vine. But the result is more than the sum of its parts. Villa Lante embodies the humanist ideals of the Italian Renaissance. In a way, all gardens, from the lowliest patch of zinnias to a sophisticated jewel of landscape design such as Villa Lante, are postage stamps from Eden. So it is no wonder that soon after I moved to Rome last spring, I began seeking them out." - RAPatton

Scientists create formula for perfect shower

"Scientists have developed a mathematical formula for the perfect shower. The balance of privacy, pressure, time and temperature in the shower all need to be carefully moderated to create the perfect shower experience, according to Mindlab International. The team led by neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis developed the formula for Cheltenham-based manufacturers Mira Showers. The formula took into account several basic shower features, from the force of the jet and the time you take in your shower, to concern that the hot water will run out. Each shower is rated on a scale of one to 100, with a score of 85 - 100 resulting in a perfect shower." - RAPatton

“I enjoy how tolerant people on FriendFeed are when it comes to politics. Apparently, I'm either dumb or 'need to have my brain examined' because I haven't gleefully drank the red or blue Kool-Aid yet.”
10 hours ago - Link
It's disappointing to see that some people simply can't handle contrary or differing opinions and that they sometimes have to resort to condescension and outright insults simply to be able to cope with it. - Akiva Moskovitz
Agree. - Rah™
I'm tolerant and unbiased. It has nothing to do with politics. We don't like you because you're Jewish. - Trish R
Trish! lulz - Yolanda
I've never been partisan myself. I've never thought one party is all good and the other all bad. Mind you, I have little faith in any of them either. For one reason or another, they seldom do what they say they will do once elected. Still, I'm right wing on some issues, and left wing on others... so if I lay out my opinions, I pretty much piss everyone off at some point! - Ian May
Trish, no hamentashen for you. - Akiva Moskovitz
We just like your wife, and tolerate you to keep her around. She is a sweetheart ;) - RAPatton

No, Akiva, you aren't allowed to leave FF. You must stay and be one of us... FOR EVERRRR. - Yolanda
Hah, yeah, sorry, my comment didn't come out as funny as I had hoped so I appended some added comedy. - Akiva Moskovitz
It has nothing to do with 'contrary opinions'. Who cares about that? We're 4 weeks from the election. We've had 20 months of hearing these guys talk and refine their positions. Nothing new is going to come out of either campaign & neither candidate is going to be 100% or even 70% to anyone. So yeah, I'm bewildered by people who can't make up their minds. I don't care if you're leaning one way... - Faboo Mama
It's those who say, "Well, I just need more information." What the hell were they doing the past 20 months? Ignoring reporting? Waiting until the last minute to do research? - Faboo Mama
So it's not all right for people to reduce you to a superficial judgement, but it's okay for you to make that same type of judgement for everyone else who has already decided? "Apparently, I'm either dumb or 'need to have my brain examined' because I haven't gleefully drank the red or blue Kool-Aid yet." How does that elevate the discussion? Decided voters drink kool-aid? And honestly, Akiva, maybe the axiom "fool me once, shame on you: fool me twice, shame on me" might be something you'd want to take to heart: you complain regularly that people are insulting you because of politics, yet you constantly engage in political discussion on FriendFeed with the same people. - Mark Trapp
your thoughts are the reason why when it comes to politics and other hot issues, I am keeping my thoughts to myself. My skin is not strong enough. (and for the record I haven't drank any of the Kool-Aid choices either) - Aden
Mark, you're off point here. First, the 'Kool-Aid' comment is just hyperbole in kind to the 'brain' quote. Secondly, when I do engage people in political discussions, I try to do so as civilly and kindly as I can. I try not to belittle people for their opinions, I try not to be insulting or condescending. I don't always succeed but I try. That's the difference. - Akiva Moskovitz
What's the matter with you people? I was joking! Don't you know a joke when you hear one? HA-HA-HA-HA. Jesus Christ, get me out of here! Open this goddamn door or I'll kick your rotten heads in! Mommy! - Trish R
I'm not off-point, Akiva: you make the same ridiculous statements, consistently, about people with whom you disagree. The same stuff you constantly complain about is the same stuff you do yourself. Of course it's hyperbole, but it's just as divisive as the stuff you get upset about. You don't try: you're just as bad. - Mark Trapp
Mark, other than the hyperbole I used here (which I admit in retrospect is pretty lame, really), where have I been coarse, disrespectful, or insulting toward those with whom I've engaged in political discussion? I'm not claiming that it's not happened but I'd like to see what you're talking about. - Akiva Moskovitz
God forbid we should have an actual dialogue or some sort of cathartic moment. - Peter "that one" Ghosh
I'm not tolerant over the partisan crap that goes on. Nothing ever gets done with finger pointing and name calling. People NEED to start working together instead of insulting each other. - Molly, the Muse
Molly, that's my point precisely. I just don't understand why people feel the need to resort to personal attacks, etc. - Akiva Moskovitz
I think it might be more annoying for those of us who are not making an enthusiastic choice. It's one thing if you are for the person, it's another if you decide he's the lesser of two evils. - Heather
Heather, well put! I think that's my issue entirely: I know where my vote will probably go but I guess I'm just disappointed that I'm not enthusiastic about it. Who knows? Maybe I'm a little envious of those who are really excited about their candidate. - Akiva Moskovitz
"When underdogism became the new black and patriotism became as cool as pocket protectors." in response to Lindsay asking when did people stop being proud to be an American, or "AJ, welcome to Fr... oh wait, that doesn't happen here. " as a comment on AJ Kohn sarcastically reducing Democrats to a list of stereotypes, because, you know, making snide comments really elevates the discourse. Or how about your reaction to Erica Mauter's offense to the "that one" comment, which you reduced to merely "righteous indignation?" Being undecided is one thing, being a dick to people who disagree with you is another, and complaining about people being a dick to you when you yourself are doing the same thing is another. - Mark Trapp
I'm actually gonna run silent on this one, since I know I crossed over into "being a dick" territory about three weeks ago, as eing logical got me nowhere. - Mark "Rizzn" Hopkins
We are all human (except Mona, who is an advanced AI robot). It's fine to be a dick on occasion if you can own it and realize you're being a dick. Maybe even be "man" enough to apologize for it later. - Rah™
Like I said, being a dick is one thing: sometimes it happens or maybe it's even necessary. But seriously, stop participating in these types of discussions if they are so abhorrent to your values. But if you're going to insist on participating in them, I don't know how many times you can be burned before you realize it's going to hurt. - Mark Trapp
I know how you feel... - phuckpolitics
Mark (Trapp), although I think your examples aren't very good (one isn't insulting at all, the other was a joke, and the third I spent a lot of time defending Erica's right to her opinion), I do agree with you that it's my fault that I keep getting sucked into political discussions here when I should know better. However, it doesn't affect the validity of this post's original point. Nor does it mean that I have lost the right to express my opinion about it, as disdainful to you as it seems to be. - Akiva Moskovitz
Oh, and I do really appreciate what you're trying to do here. I try to be really self-aware of what I do but I sometimes I miss things. It's good to know that there are people around here who are willing to stand up and call 'Bullshit!' when I start acting like an idiot. I just don't think I'm acting like an idiot in this case. - Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, the stuff you say is just as potent as what people say to you. Do you really think someone truly believes that you need your head examined, and that it's not merely hyperbole or a joke just like you do? I've said twice now that you're being hypocritical when you complain about the level of political discourse on FriendFeed, and probably the best way to alleviate the problem is to stop participating in the discussions, but you've now turned that into me hating your opinions or your right to have an opinion. I'm disagreeing with you, not oppressing you: in the same respect, people disagree with you politically, they're not trying to put you down. Stop creating a victim atmosphere and be the change you wish to see. - Mark Trapp
You're basing some of this without knowing what threads even inspired this post. Also, I agreed with you that it's my responsibility for getting involved in the first place. But, where did I claim that you're hating my opinions? Where did I write that I feel oppressed by you? Heck, I wrote that I appreciate what you're doing here! I also never equated opposition with insult; I'm well familiar with the difference. - Akiva Moskovitz
I can express my opinion without using phrases like 'braindead liberal' or 'right-wing nut'. My only point here was to wonder why others can't do the same (and, remember, I admitted that I'm not guiltless). - Akiva Moskovitz
Akiva, you said "I do agree with you that it's my fault that I keep getting sucked into political discussions here when I should know better. However, it doesn't affect the validity of this post's original point. Nor does it mean that I have lost the right to express my opinion about it, as disdainful to you as it seems to be." I never questioned your ability to have an opinion, your right to have an opinion, or said your opinions or your right to have an opinion was disdainful to me. I think I do know to what you are referring, but regardless of context, do you really think someone truly believes you need your head examined? - Mark Trapp
Of course not. But that quote doesn't fully represent the gist of oh for the love of G-d, Mark. Let's just end this and get on with our Saturday nights, shall we? If we keep this up, we'll end up on ffholic.com or something. Sheesh! - Akiva Moskovitz

"It started when three brothers joked about making pornography for fans of the genre who happen to be offended by on-screen sex. Out of that joke came an idea for a website, and they called it PG Porn. In creating pornography that appeals to viewers who want their titillation toned down, brothers James, Sean and Brian Gunn are banking on web-surfers' growing acceptance of porn. Sean starred in the television show Gilmore Girls and James wrote the screenplay for the 2002 movie Scooby-Doo.
