City Girl in such a context proves what should be an axiom for cinema: it is not what is being filmed but how one films it that is all that matters. - TStowers via Bookmarklet

In his films, Rambo is constantly portrayed as judge, jury, and executioner in the national and international spheres. Obviously outside the scope of American law, Rambo holds an incorruptible sense of morality and justice. Furthermore, in the world of Rambo there are no moral conundrums, and everything is black and white, with no shades of gray. - Jonathan Lee
"In any event, the cinematic adaptation of First Blood was not very faithful to Morrell’s book. As noted by Morrell in the introduction to a recent reprint of his book, it is perhaps ironic that while First Blood was intended as an allegory to the social polarization in the US during the Vietnam War, the subsequent film versions became metaphors for the social polarization that troubled America during the Reagan years". - Excellent article - TStowers
I am by no means a Reganite however this article does lead me to remind other readers that the country was never more polarized then during the Revolutionary War. And although extremely dramatized, stories such as Rambo’s have basis in reality in many times and places throughout history. It’s all to easy in an organized society such as ours, so removed from our animal instincts, to dismiss stories like Rambo as propaganda. However the at the root of everyman is the ability to act as judge, jury and executioner and it is only our responsibility as a citizen that stands between order and chaos. You should also remember that you could find yourself on the wrong side of town, at the wrong time of night in most large cities even in this great nation and you to might become a Rambo, hope you brought your red bandanna. - Jason via Alert Thingy

"They say misery loves company, but the same may be even more true of happiness. In a study published online today by the British Medical Journal, scientists from Harvard University and UC San Diego showed that happiness spreads readily through social networks of family members, friends and neighbors. Knowing someone who is happy makes you 15.3% more likely to be happy yourself, the study found. A happy friend of a friend increases your odds of happiness by 9.8%, and even your neighbor's sister's friend can give you a 5.6% boost." - Anna Haro
"The research is part of a growing trend to measure well-being as a crucial component of public health. Scientists have documented that people who describe themselves as happy are likely to live longer, even if they have a chronic illness." - Anna Haro

ScienceDaily-Dogs Chase Efficiently, But Cats Skulk Counterintuitively
2 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
"A Duke University study suggests that evolution can behave as differently as dogs and cats. While the dogs depend on an energy-efficient style of four-footed running over long distances to catch their prey, cats seem to have evolved a profoundly inefficient gait, tailor-made to creep up on a mouse or bird in slow motion. "It is usually assumed that efficiency is what matters in evolution," said Daniel Schmitt, a Duke associate professor of evolutionary anthropology. "We've found that's too simple a way of looking at evolution, because there are some animals that need to operate at high energy cost and low efficiency. Namely cats." - Anna Haro via Bookmarklet

Jemm- I have. None as satisfying as watching the tumbling of a load of whites though :p - Matt Musgrave
prolly explains why dogs tend to be higher predators than cats (inc big cats) - alphaxion
I guess cats creep closer to their preys so that they wouldn't have to run so much, if they can surprise the victims. Also if birds notice the cat, they can't be caught just by running (Unless cats can fly. Some cats have wings already: http://www.ananova.com/news/st...). - Jemm

"It began in 1933 as a lad's mag of sorts, but Esquire soon had more serious aspirations. It was publishing the likes of Truman Capote and Dorothy Parker, and needed covers to match its content. So, advertising whiz-kid George Lois obliged with a run of 92 trailblazing covers dating from 1962 to 1972. He packed provocative concepts into simple but powerful composite images which would squarely confront the turbulent times and grab the public's attention; images such as Andy Warhol drowning in his own soup can, and Muhammad Ali being skewered like St Sebastian (above). And it worked - during his brief tenure the magazine's circulation soared from 500,000 to 2m." - Anna Haro
