Some 20% of top brand marketers continue to send additional emails to consumers, even after they confirm requests from those consumers to “unsubscribe” from an email marketing list, according to a research study from Return Path, MarketingCharts writes. - webosapien (Burcu Tüzün)
Of the 20% of companies that sent more than one additional email after the opt-out request was received, most sent four or more additional messages, a practice that Return Path said could undermine customers’ relationships with the brand. - webosapien (Burcu Tüzün)
The survey also revealed that 11% of companies were still emailing subscribers more than 10 days after confirming an unsubscribe request - a violation of the federal CAN-SPAM Act. This puts marketers at risk of damaging their overall email reputation with spam complaints if they have a faulty email unsubscribe process. See chart of the number of days for which emails were sent after an unsubscribe request. - webosapien (Burcu Tüzün)
# Most companies studied provided customers with immediate confirmation that their unsubscribe request was processed - through a landing page on their website. # The majority of companies provided a link from the email to an unsubscribe landing page on their website (about 60%) or a preference page (about 40%). # Only 11% of companies provided an opportunity for subscribers to change their email address on the unsubscribe landing page, despite the potential to increase retention by doing so. # Only two companies out of the 45 studied offered options for subscribers to change the frequency they received email or the ability to opt out of some of the marketers’ emails. - webosapien (Burcu Tüzün)
# Just over a quarter of companies asked individuals who were unsubscribing to confirm their email address, a step that helps assure that the correct individual is unsubscribed. # A handful of companies are still requiring that the subscriber log-in to unsubscribe, which is not compliant with the recently updated CAN-SPAM Act. # Two companies required subscribers to send an email to request to unsubscribe, a process that is often perceived as inconvenient by the subscriber. # Just two companies used the landing page to remind subscribers of the benefits the email program was providing them. # Only two of the companies studied took advantage of the opt-out process to learn how they could improve their email program. They included a few simple survey questions on the landing page to help them understand why customers were unsubscribing and how they could do better. - webosapien (Burcu Tüzün)
awful!!! when do some marketers learn what "unsubscribe" mean? Hello, he wants to unsubscribe! - webosapien (Burcu Tüzün)

Why do we have to specify the service that the feed belongs? FF should recognise the service automatically. Also I agree that actual blog feeds should be separated from unsupported ones and something has to be done about the icons. - endiaferon

Guys: if you love your partners and your kids, get checked. Leave your ego at the door and deal with it. You will live longer and better lives if you get things caught in the early stages. “So, for those of you that told me "just because the US consumer feels like we're in a recession doesn't mean we're actually *in* a recession": I told you so. With that out of the way, what are your thoughts now that it turns out we're in month 12 of (you guessed it) a recession?”
Monday at 8:59 pm - Link
This should be interesting. :-) - Daryl aka Lil Trumpet Boy
My thoughts are that we're actually going into a depression. - Chris White
LOL! I hate to have to say it, Daryl, but I *did* tell them. Repeatedly. And all I ever got back was "But the GDP hasn't been down two quarters in a row!". The simple fact is that the US economy is consumer driven. If the consumer feels like we're in a recession, they change spending patterns and start saving/hoarding. Those are actions that grind the current economy to a halt. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Tina, maybe the bigger problem is our GDP is now 70% consumer spending. Doesn't that seem wrong? Spending money on crap doesn't create any value. - Chris White
Chris, it unfortunately doesn't matter if a consumer spending economy is right or wrong: that's the bed we've made and now we have to lie in it. I mean, my job is indirectly tied to consumer spending: I provide services to business clients who are dealing with consumers. Chances are, a lot of us are in that boat. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
What? Where? I don't see no stinkin' recession.... - Glen Campbell
I was gonna make this post for you, but tehJill had the laptop. - tehKenny
the way i see the malls around here jammed with people.. i to don't see a recession... - Jay Martinez
Tina, unfortunately, this economy is going to crash. Peter Schiff describes it exactly: http://bayradio.com/kgo_archiv... Things are not going to be the same as they were. - Chris White
Chris, that was the point I was (poorly) trying to make: I don't deal with consumers, but a crash in a consumer based system could very easily cost me my job. As for people in the mall, Jay: my husband and I went to 3 stores Friday night, including Sears at the mall. We spent under $40 total... - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Tina, listen to the interview. People are going to lose their jobs. It's sad, but it is going to happen eventually. Delaying it will just make it worse (i.e. more jobs lost, longer time without jobs) - Chris White

This is my first backyard in over 20 years, since I was kid. It's nice and a lot of work, but I'm so content having it. I often do yoga stretches back there and it's very nice considering it was nothing but dirt when we moved in almost 2 years ago. - Anika Malone

Only a few can afford a backyard over here (space issue). And am not one of them. I miss my parent's place back in my home country. <Sigh> - BeeLing
Bee, I think it's the same here. We lucked out with this place. Derrick, I'm freezing! It's 59 degrees! WTF is up with that? Hope you're feeling better. - Anika Malone
i'm so okay with not having a yard. actually, i wouldn't mind the one i have if it came with a fence. my neighbors are neighborly in a bad way considering that i'm utterly anti-social. they're all very much "aw, sweetie, you need a man to help you with this house" types who like to have conversations and shit. - tiffany
My yard isn't big enough (roughly 40 acres in the middle of nowhere but most of it is horse pasture). I've got to figure out where to put more garden in the spring. It is so great still having fresh vegetables in the winter. I once had 117 acres. It was wonderful until the area started growing and I was on a gravel road between two farm to market roads. I could use some of your bamboo to hold up the sheets I cover the garden with when it drops to freezing at night. - Internet Strategist
<major eyeroll @ Internet Strategist> :) The part of my garden for actually plantable is 22 feet x 39 feet. I have over 270 plants in my back yard alone; representing 80 different things and that includes a ton of veggies and fruits. - Anika Malone
Anika, that's nice :-) My mom's a major greenthumb and our 1-acre property (down from 25 acres due to the rapid expansion of Bangalore urban limits, aka "development") is full of banana, mango, coconut, rose-apple, sapodilla, pear-apple, pomegranate, custard apple, passion fruit, tapioca, jackfruit, papaya, teak trees, Flame-of-the-forest trees and several others. Plus many, many flowering plants and vegetables too! Come visit! http://flickr.com/photos/debsi... - Siddharth Deb
Siddharth, that is very nice. So sad the city is taking your property. - Anika Malone
Thanks! Actually we had to sell most of our property to a private developer, because as our farm came within the urban zone, the City itself could've tried to purchase our land to develop into plots to build houses. However, they pay much less than a private developer would, so we chose to sell to the latter. That didn't work out too well for us either, because we got shafted on the deal (the developer knew that a major new highway project was coming up nearby, and that increased property values in our area) - Siddharth Deb
