Putin Faces Peppering On Economy In Broadcast - NYTimes.com

"MOSCOW — Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin spent much of his annual question-and-answer televised exchange on Thursday seeking to reassure Russians that the effects of the global economic crisis on the country would be minimal. He also denied increased speculation that he might seek an early return to the presidency." - Jonathan Le Plastrier via Bookmarklet

"It would be interesting to do a comparison with a solution that included MobileMe. Granted that it's a laughing stock, but it does a bunch of useful things that people generally don't consider: - Pushes contacts and calendar events to the iphone (I am not aware of an alternative for this) - Creates a 'instant vpn' with back-to-my-mac. I don't know how many people use this, but I have been pretty impressed. - Syncs Safari contacts. I used to use weave - which works very nicely - but I prefer Safari to Firefox. - Syncs Keychains - this one is very nice. Having the web passwords that I entered on my desktop available on my laptop is surprisingly cool. Even more useful has been having wifi keys magically present on all my machines. I am very unhappy with iDisk though. Sync mode is completely unusable, and so it's basically just a WebDav. I have switched to the fantastic DropBox instead. On the topic of DropBox - FolderShare used to do almost all of what DropBox does (and some things that..." - Robin Barooah

“Does anyone have any recommendations for the best coffee timer? I'm looking for something easy to use, that doesn't need the countdown time to be reset each time.”
November 15 at 1:18 pm - Link
I just ordered this: http://www.espressoparts.com/p... EspressoParts is not the cheapest place to buy them but they were there to pick up the phone get a timer in front of them and answer all of my questions about it. - Robin Barooah
Why do you need a timer? - Veronica
I'm using a vac-pot to make my coffee. It turns out that a key factor in the quality of the results is how much time the coffee is in contact with the water after all of the water is in the top flask and before I take the heat away. I've been using the timer on my microwave to time it (about 1:20), but that is no good if the microwave is actually being used for cooking! Also, I want to start experimenting with it a bit more systematically. - Robin Barooah

"Well, I agree that it may not be passé yet, but I think that's where we're going, and I don't see apple building infrastructure for wired syncing because they will then be encumbered with supporting that model for years to come, furthermore it will expose them to buggy conduits etc. that will reduce the perception that the iPhone 'just works'. I. for a while lived a slightly more nomadic lifestyle than you, wherein I could only sync with my 'desktop' computer about once a week, even though I had an apple laptop with me most of the time. MobileMe made a massive difference to my experience under those conditions, and the ability to enter an appointment on the laptop and have confidence that it would appear on the phone changes the way I feel about the technology. The iPhone continues the iPod model of having a one-way flow of media from the computer to the device. From this perspective, apps are treated as just another kind of media that the iPhone 'plays'. One may quibble with this by..." - Robin Barooah

Wow - are you seriously considering a switch for MSOY? That would be super-cool (as they say in france). - Robin Barooah
I don't think we'd ever switch the primary repository (and I don't think it necessarily makes sense for such a non-distributed-project), but I'm experimenting with using git-svn so that I can maintain multiple pending feature branches since I frequently end up working on many things at once. - Michael

"Yes, too much crack. I agree with you that syncing is a problem for the iphone, and that every app having it's own wifi based sync application isn't the answer, however neither is the palm solution. I used palms for years and used handDbase for invoicing as a contractor and later a treo300, and at the time it was by far the best solution, but those days are over. Firstly the 30,000 apps are really out of date and unappealing. Not just aesthetically, but in terms of usability and functionality. Secondly, desktop apps may not be passé but syncing directly with the desktop over a cable certainly is. The favored solution for the iphone is to sync both the desktop app and the device with the cloud. Apple themselves are moving in this direction with MobileMe (implementation issues aside), the mobile app store, and itunes on the device. Omnifocus is a great example of taking this approach. The main reason why this is taking time to emerge is that developing the backend takes different..." - Robin Barooah
