“i hate clicking on somebody's link in twitter and getting sent to bleeping friendfeed .. it feels like a manipulation from friendfeed to get an extra page view .. eff that ... i learn to distrust certain twitter users, and there is nothing good about this ... get rid of the effing middle-man please”
November 2 at 6:36 am - Link
What would you rather? Everyone has to make money, and I'd rather see FF than Digg...... - Aaron Krug
it makes me value some twitter users less .. why burden me with extra clicks for the sake of your money .. and digg has become a joke not worth visiting, with a manipulation mentality similar to what you are suggesting .. not sure it was friendfeed's intention, or quick and dirty code to get the functionality for posting to twitter from ff ... it wastes my time .. you don't mind? - Gregory Lent
technically, when you see "this tweet was posted from FriendFeed" next to the Tweet, that should be marketing enough. At the same time, the link could be added value when there's a conversation going on, and those are usually better in FriendFeed. It's a tough situation, for sure. In the end, it's a limitation of Twitter more (by not allowing for embedded links for example) than FriendFeed (even though that has something of the same limitation) - Vincent van Wylick
totally disagree! FF is a great service and deserves extra clicks for self-promo! everything else would be stupid! - Dieter Schwarz
@Dieter this is not a pool party with your mates so get over the 'clicks for mates' syndrome. @Gregory you are totally right but unfortunately @Vincent makes a smart and valid argument as to why we spend more time in this pickle than we (you and I) likely would otherwise. Twitter needs to build out their feature set more, but we can all agree on that. I keep waiting for OAuth myself. - Roger Kondrat
dieter .. lol .. a fan, i see ... me, i don't want to waste time .. say i click on 10 links a day .. if i have a slow connection, that is doubling my waiting time .. i lose respect for friendfeed - Gregory Lent
@Roger "clicks for mates" is what keeps us all in business - it´s a valid "marketing syndrome" ;) - Dieter Schwarz
it is the implicit message that many marketers don't understand .. the marketer is being selfish at my expense, and sooner or later, i am gone ... the time for that is over .. serve me, i will use you, use me, i will leave you - Gregory Lent
I hate following someone on Twitter, and instantly getting links to their commercial web sites. It's rude, dude. At least make conversation first. Oh too late. I unfollowed you, just as quick. - Ian May
@Dieter its not valid, its unethical and its undesireable behaviour that inflates traffic and diminishes the return an advertiser gets which is bad for everyone including the ad seller. - Roger Kondrat
well - this is not about ethics, being selfish or any other religion... it´s about business...bringing traffic to your service is unethical? ok...i see... - Dieter Schwarz
if you manipulate me for your gain dieter, it only has short term value, long term it guarantees a fail .. look at wall street in america - Gregory Lent
Actually, it is less sinister than you imply; it was a feature request a lot of users had - they wanted to be able to filter by service more easily. Your point is taken though. - Bret Taylor
thanks bret, glad you stopped by - Gregory Lent
@Dieter I don't think we were talking about someone driving traffic to their site or have I missed the convo here. Its about people linking to their site as a pass through to another site e.g. Twitter - FF - Info. That has been on the hate list for years. It became popular once on Digg when guys there made clips on their blog & then submitted to Digg. This practice hurt relationships with your potential customer because it is irritating. Believe me choosing not to do it IS good business. - Roger Kondrat
Bret is amazingly on top of things @ FF - very cool! - Susan Beebe (Santa Claus)
@Bret I don't think anyone is saying anything is sinister at least not me. Its just a discussion about a specific instance and that certain behaviour may not be positive. I could be wrong but that is how I came into this convo. - Roger Kondrat
from above... "not sure it was friendfeed's intention, or quick and dirty code to get the functionality for posting to twitter from ff ... (but) it wastes my time .." - Gregory Lent
The new FriendFeed landings serve a needed purpose. We FF users want to be able to have our FF activity show up on Twitter. - Mike Reynolds
Ah, yes, I misunderstood. We are going to add that as an option. Some people wanted to link back to FF to get to the conversation, but that is clearly annoying in some cases. I will keep you all posted. - Bret Taylor
Gregory, I replied in the other thread, but if you see→ ff.im as the link shortener, it's coming here. Sometimes I just take note, and join the conv later if I want to stay on Twitter. - Ed Shaz/NextInstinct
and a lot of the world has slow connections, so making double clicks to get to a link is cruel !! :-) - Gregory Lent
I see that Bret has already chimed in so I'll make my comment brief: The way I see FF to twitter publishing is not so much as a link to the source, but a link to a discussion. The discussion on FF is the value-add. Otherwise, I sort of agree with you Gregory that it's more annoying than say, ping.fm. - Phil Glockner
yeah, i love my friends for their links, and to have to delay that with another click, well, i said it already .. enjoy, all - Gregory Lent
FWIW, I've been publishing my FriendFeed to Twitter since Friday, I haven't had any complaints, I've gotten some positive feedback, and I still have the same number of followers I did on Friday. So I'd say FF's behavior is having no negative impact on my Twitter experience, or that of the people following me. I'm more concerned about publishing links back to FriendFeed comments (like this one). - Mitch Wagner
I lost one Twitter follower during my 3 day FF-to-Twitter tenure, but that's probably because of the political content with my messages in recent days. Completely understood. - Mike Reynolds
I wrote a background script that does back linking differently based on various criteria. e.g. If I post an external link to FF and add a comment, my twitter stream gets my comment and a link back to the original website. That way discussion can go on simultaneously on Twitter and on FF. I'm trying out the new FF feature but am inclined to go back to the script. If you'd like to use the script, search for ff2tweet. - samgrover
I see no problem with this. If you see the short url and the comment being originated on FF, then don't click on it. - Alejandro S.

Leo Laporte posted a tweet saying that he could make over 1.5 thousand euros a month. The problem is that by the end of the month he would have no more followers. On the other hand this may be good for accounts like NPR and big name news accounts. - Sweyn
and is twitter making the money? or magpie? - Gregory Lent
The user makes the money, and Magpie must have their share in it. Twitter is not earning anything - Keshav Khera
I signed up for Magpie. After I saw the very first ad go out to everyone that follows me I realized that it wasn't worth the purported 15 Euros a month and I cancelled it right away. I'd say that the purported value is inversly proportional to the number of followers you have too. - Troy Forster via twhirl
funny, all the good ideas twitter lets slide by - Gregory Lent
I am going to try it out for a month, already adjusted my tweets to one every 10. Honestly I don't think they will notice it. Also agreed if everyone did it then it would be a disaster but in all fairness most (90%) of Twitter'ers only follow 10-50 people so it is us 'connectors' that will do most of the hating. Either way I will give it a go as I want to be able to validate it for clients in the future. - Roger Kondrat
I'm not sure if I want ads on anything that is that "personal" as twitter.... Wouldn't want to annoy my friends... - Markus
I dropped the two peeps I followed using this as soon as I saw they were using it, I think its a horrible idea and hope it fails. At the very least its a way to loose followers! - Dave Pook

Does this make you feel good? Did you go around in school telling the other kids how stupid they are and how much smarter you must be because you don't like them? I honestly cannot fathom the self-centeredness and intellectual snobbery it takes to compose a post like this. - Glen Campbell

Glen C: My mother is Chinese and my father Caucasian. I spent part of my time growing up in Kentucky and going to high school where I had to put up with being called a chink every single day at school. (I look Chinese.) I will never forget that. The reason kids say things like that is because they hear it from their parents at home. Sorry if you cannot understand how that makes someone like me feel. Helen, I never use it, but one of Duncan's most notorious bitch fights happened when he called Louis that. :D - Cyndy
Duncan Riley didn't call you stupid. He called the "hate the rich" meme stupid. There's a difference. - Morton Fox
If he had said I say some stupid stuff and actually paraphrased what I said instead of a lame-ass parody of what I said, that would be fine. But to turn what I said into a stupid parody of what I said to make his point that I'm stupid...that's over the top. Dawn, you blocked me so well I can still see your comments...lol :-) Alex, see what Morton said. I've got a lot of time for you, but your hate the rich stuff is beyond me. If you can't separate the two, that's your issue, and I wouldn't expect you to agree with me all the time either. That you've responded in this way now really just proves the general meme of the post: civility is lost. - Duncan Riley
Duncan, when someone blocks you, you can't see their posts but you can still see their comments. - Akiva Moskovitz
I always though it was both...least it has been for me. Oh well. No great loss either way - Duncan Riley
The fact that you used me as an example while misquoting what I said in your personal blog, instead of by making an intelligent dismissal of my ideas proves your point and makes you a hypocrite to boot. And nowhere have I ever said that I hate the rich. Next thing you are going to tell me that Teddy Roosevelt hated the rich. What I do not like are people who use all that society has to give and then do not want to pay taxes appropriately. - Alex Scoble CISSP
Alex, I've responded on some of your previous threads, for example in relation to your idea that people shouldn't earn interest, I pointed out at the time that the money was used to makes loans etc... I don't have to repeat myself every time because you can't remember my line from the avalanche of people who disagreed with you. I'm sorry you feel this way, we disagree on tax, nothing more, but you're the one making this more - Duncan Riley
My idea wasn't that people shouldn't earn interest. My point was that when you have large sums of money, the mere fact have having that money gains you more wealth. This is an advantage that rich people have over the poor and much of the middle class. It's like a katamari ball. The bigger your ball the more stuff it pulls in...it's not in anyone's interest to have people out there with so much money that they can corrupt governments. That is why we have a progressive tax system... - Alex Scoble CISSP
To prevent the UNFETTERED accumulation of wealth. - Alex Scoble CISSP
And I'm not the one making this bigger than it is...you did this by using my name on your blog and misconstruing my comments in an inflammatory way. You are doing the exact thing that Mark Hopkins quit friendfeed over. - Alex Scoble CISSP
So I earn money - I get taxed on that - I save it - I save like a fiend, and now I'm relatively well off. So I should get taxed *more* because I've worked my ass off to get to where I am? Sorry, I don't buy that. - Matt Craven
Speaking of "rich" in web terms please don't forget to LINK. I found it curious that neither Duncan or you, Alex, linked up the source so readers could easily draw their own opinions. He didn't link this FriendFeed comment in his blog post and you didn't link his blog post here. Accidental? Intentional? This seems like a classic case of: "I disagree with XYZ and won't link to them but believe me ___ is what they meant." Wrong. - TDavid
And for others who don't want to sleuth the link. Duncan's post that Alex is talking about is here: http://www.duncanriley.com/200... - his exact quote begins with: "...stupid hate the rich meme that’s come up of late, driven in part by Alex Scoble. If you ever wanted to prove that Obama supporters are socialists, read Alex’s stuff." - TDavid
The full quote is "If you ever wanted to prove that Obama supporters are socialists, read Alex’s stuff. Dumb stuff, like the rich are only rich because they already have money, and should be taxed so they are equal, or people shouldn’t be allowed to make interest on money because that’s not a productive use of money." Which is just a lame parody of what I've said...and by the way, if you think this stuff is socialist...then you are calling Teddy Roosevelt a socialist and that makes your opinion... - Alex Scoble CISSP
on this matter very suspect. - Alex Scoble CISSP
