Yeah, don't think that one was thought all the way through... - Jeremy Osborne
Pogue also posted an update about reader response (can't paste the link from my iPhone...). He prints lots of comments from readers who agree with his review, none from those who don't, then uses a few crackpot comments to make a "BlackBerry nuts" jibe. Seems like he has an axe to grind... - Jules
I think he's got a point though - Have both? Cup of drink in one hand, which can you pick out a single song from a list of hundreds quicker on with the other hand? Wheel or touch? - Chris Weiss via twhirl
If there's one thing Pogue hates, it's criticism. No one likes it, but he goes to great lengths to refute it. - Veronica
Chris, frankly the scroll wheel tires the heck out of my thumb. I've found that I can find songs faster on the touch/iPhone. - Veronica
I was surprised to see that the readers agreed with Pogue about his review. As soon as I saw Gruber's post, I thought there would be a RIM riot, but nope. - Larry Hudson
I'm sure the ones he picked were a little skewed. - Veronica
I'm faster with the scroll wheel, too much twitching to be accurate with the touch - maybe the other hand should be holding decaf instead :) - Chris Weiss via twhirl
I had to use someone's iPod Classic this weekend past to quickly make a playlist, and since I've been using the iPhone I seem to have lost the skill to make playlists quickly on the old iPod's scroll wheel. - Matthew J Hendrickse

Leo, could you explain me how to insert audio in the posts like you please? - Didier Lahely
It probably has to do with enclosures in the RSS feed. - Jason Huebel
I'd like to know also, if you get a chance - Tom Mack
If the audio is in the feed, FF will put the player in itself. I have my Utterz feed listed in FF, and when I leave an audio post FF puts that little player in too. - Ciaoenrico
Please change "Steve Gibson's comments" to "Steve Gillmor's comments" on the description page for this episode. :) - Dr. Apps via twhirl
Rest in peace Pownce... - Kyle DeFacis

"Don't believe the lie:average wages for workers at Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors were just $28 per hour as of 2007" - Leo Laporte via Bookmarklet
@Leo: perhaps, but health benefits for life just doesn't work anymore - Dave Hodson
You want to save Detroit: institute national health insurance. Labor costs for the Japanese plants in right-to-work states like Tennessee are very similar including pension and healthcare benefits, BUT they're newer plants so they don't have as many retirees. Are the Big Three supposed to jettison their retirees? That's where the big expenses lie. - Leo Laporte
Leo - as is, those benefits will disappear in a Chapter 11 filing - Dave Hodson
The unions are destroying the auto industry by holding the big 3 to unrealistic terms. Some blame has to go to automakers for agreeing to those ridiculous terms. - Jim Bednarz
Everyone talks about the union workers needing to make concessions. What concessions are the CEOs going to make with their stratospheric salaries, bonuses and compensation. It has to be a balance. You can't be selective with your criticism. How about management's decisions. You can't blame the workers for management's business plan. They didn't choose to build gas guzzlers and no energy efficient and alternative fuel vehicles, top level management did They need to go. - Rolf Schewe
Both sides of the aisle need to get realistic, really fast... B.S. CEO salaries and golden parachute benefit pkgs need to go away NOW and lame Union mentality is digging US automakers into a graveyard hole they will never surface out of. Lesson learned - stop milking the US tax payer and get your ass to work like the rest of the world. Deliver valuable products and folks will buy them.... end of story - Susan Beebe (Santa Claus)
There's health care too. CEOs wrongheadedness is more of a reason why they are in bad shape. American cars are crap. Period. If they sold enough cars they would have money to pay their employees. Sure these union contracts can be more reasonable. But the union bashing is just right wing blather. All this talk bashing unions and hoping for these companies to go bankrupt is a trojan horse for union busting don't kid yourself. If people hate them so much then try and give up the benefits they established. - Rolf Schewe
Government should have never stepped in on the free market. These companies would have filed ch11 and possibly had their shares sink low enough that a company would have bought and restructured the companies. That is how a free market works. This "Raw Deal" is going to have an impact on not just us in the short term but our grandchildren and their grandchildren. Look it up, we are still seeing crippling effects of projects started by the "New Deal." Who really thinks this won't just be more of the same? - Raymond C
Once upon a time there were Corporate jobs for life that came with full benefits, health insurance for life, and retirement. Corporations had to know that when the "Baby Boomers" retired there was going to be reckoning. They once HAD the money invested to pay for these promises but they allowed the CEOs and Board of Directors to raid those accounts (Cash Pensions). Perhaps they never had any intention of paying or maybe they just got greedier and found a way. - Internet Strategist
The difference in the value of money between countries makes it impossible to pay a living wage in the U.S. and compete with a country like India where $1 USD is roughly $46 in their money. Something in the U.S. economy has got to give and "you ain't seen nothing yet". - Internet Strategist
the 70 is the cost to the company, not what the worker gets - Gregory Lent
$70 INCLUDING already retired workers - not just the CURRENTLY employed. Many of those retirees worked for poor wages and counted on their promised retirement and income. Other corporations - significantly those WITHOUT Union representation - that made similar promises allowed their CEOs and BODs to steal the funding out from under retirees using Cash Pensions. There once were many sites dedicated to fighting this theft. Looks like they've finally thrown in the towel. - Internet Strategist
Promises that Corporations made IN WRITING to their employees - promises that in many cases kept them working for pay only a fraction of what they would have earned elsewhere - were systematically broken. For example, the base pay for an experienced Tech at Cisco was more than THREE TIMES higher than for a CE holding the same position at IBM. They stayed because of the promise of full retirement after 30 years and health care for life - something they no longer have. But they do still make only 1/3 the pay! - Internet Strategist
Worse yet is the situation of the already retired. Some of the oldest IBM retirees were getting only a few hundred dollars a month when they had to start paying more for their health benefits (which they were promised would never happen) than the ENTIRE amount of their pensions. Warning to those who think they can do better in a 401K. What do you think the US Dollar will be worth when you are 70, 80, 90 or even 60? - Internet Strategist
Fighting Corporations is pretty much a hopeless cause. IBM Employees won the first battle because cash pensions WERE ILLEGAL. Don't know what ever happened. One thing I do know - many bills introduced into Congress do the opposite of what they appear to do and many "grass roots" organizations are funded by corporations. At least with they called this one the EMPLOYER'S Coalition on Medicare instead of pretending they were the EMPLOYEES: http://www.americanprogress.or... - Internet Strategist
in india you could work 30 years for the indian tobacco corporation as an electrician and get 10 dollars a month pension .. - Gregory Lent
InternetStrategist - To be clear here, cash balance plans were NOT illegal. There was a clear disagreement over whether the CONVERSION to a cash balance plan from a straight defined benefit plan caused an impermissible reduction in benefits. The court ruled that the possibility existed. The outcome of the grass roots groups, etc. over the IBM plan was that cash balance plans were written into the laws and regulations for pension plans, along with guidelines for doing so without causing the IBM dilemma. - Karoli
InternetStrategist (continued) Cash Balance plans continue to be a viable solution to the question of how to balance pension costs against the need to protect workers' pension income. But to say that there was theft and stealing is just misstating facts. It was a legitimate disagreement that was ultimately settled in court. (I have been a pension administrator for 30 years...followed this intently) - Karoli

“I'm enjoying Camino so far, but it has one tiny and frustrating bug that's been driving me batty. When I hit "R" to reply to email within Gmail, it doesn't put the cursor in the text field! I'm so used to it, that I continue typing and end up muting or deleting the conversation via hotkeys.”

I'm giving Camino 24 more hours. If by then I don't feel "at home" I'm back to Safari. I found that Camino doesn't render well some pages I use a lot. And the Gmail buttons look ugly, and the Gmail foreign language corrector doesn't work... - Tunico Lage
Sorry to hear about the problems. Of course, everybody has their own unique way of browsing. For me, Camino is my main browser. I use FF at times when I need the plugins, but I have to say that Camino gets 60% of my time. - Fleagle
Its strange, I use Chrome only at work.. and FF only at home.. yes, I know, I am strange... - Socom
V: do try Webkit's nightly releases? r38852 is impressive with rendering and javascript speed so far. Compared to Camino's Gecko and SpiderMonkey engines, latest Webkit or FF 3.1 should be much faster with a smaller memory footprint (assuming no mem leaks :P) - Berk D. Demir
Take a look at the Webkit vs Firefox 3.1 benchmark. People are reporting other browser results too. IE 7 is pathetic :) http://friendfeed.com/e/64af41... - Berk D. Demir
