“Does anyone have any recommendations for the best coffee timer? I'm looking for something easy to use, that doesn't need the countdown time to be reset each time.”
I just ordered this: http://www.espressoparts.com/p... EspressoParts is not the cheapest place to buy them but they were there to pick up the phone get a timer in front of them and answer all of my questions about it. - Robin Barooah
I'm using a vac-pot to make my coffee. It turns out that a key factor in the quality of the results is how much time the coffee is in contact with the water after all of the water is in the top flask and before I take the heat away. I've been using the timer on my microwave to time it (about 1:20), but that is no good if the microwave is actually being used for cooking! Also, I want to start experimenting with it a bit more systematically. - Robin Barooah
Good, so far! Having some issues with the dosage of coffee, but still experimenting. - Veronica
very interesting - would you say it's better than a beehouse and paper filter? (like they use for drip at blue-bottle) ? - Robin Barooah
I wouldn't say better... similar principle. Blue Bottle Mint Plaza sells the Chemex, and the barista recommended it to me as well (I got mine on Amazon). - Veronica
This looks like my coffee setup I use when camping. :-) - Jenny R.
My first cup was an americano made with Blue Bottle Hayes Valley Espresso coffee. I had a cup of drip from the Blue Bottle cafe this morning (because of my accident with the siphon) and I have to say that the results from the Aeropress were extremely similar. - Robin Barooah
I used it again yesterday - had 3 cups during the course of the day. I have to say the results were consistently very good. It is very easy to control the amount of coffee you make and how strong it is, and it is as quick and easy to clean as they say. It also produced great results every time with no real practice - which is not true of hand dripping or siphoning. The only drawback, if you can call it that, is that it has no romance to it at all - it's almost like using a medical appliance. - Robin Barooah
LOL @ syringe... it goes PERFECTLY with the IV ;) - Mona N.
Tried this with the Jamaican Blue Mountain. Surprisingly, FAIL. It tasted good, but had none of the richness I got from dripping. The Aeropress seem to do a very good job of extracting the sweeter notes but doesn't handle the body well, so it will make an average coffee taste sweeter, but do violence to something that's already well balanced. - Robin Barooah
I think I'm going to relegate this for coffees that are past their prime. - Robin Barooah
(note: that last comment doesn't mean that I have stopped thinking this is great - I'll be using the siphon or hand dripping instead) - Robin Barooah
So you're having good luck with Blue Bottle beans, generally? That's what I'd typically be using. - Veronica
Just having a cup of the Temescal Espresso made using the Aeropress. Very nice indeed. Definitely works well with espresso/mokka pot blends. - Robin Barooah
i live in turkey and i dont know how can i buy. how much money did you pay for Aeropress? is it expensive? - fatih gül
If only you can hook up to a hose you can do an iv. Neat device. - Jeff B
i've had coffee made from just about every brewing method around and this one, hands down, makes the best cup of coffee I've had. very highly recommended. - Brett Kelly
I need to replace my old espresso maker - this is definitely a contender. - Caffeinated Sue
I like drinking from a glazed, ceramic mug. I'm not sure that it influences the taste, but I just like to drink from my favorite coffee mug. I did have an unglazed ceramic mug I got in Mexico that made my coffee taste metallic...gross. - Jenny R.
I ask because I just bought some $4 but very nicely made small coffee cups from ikea, and my coffee really does seem to taste significantly better than it does from even a nice mug. - Robin Barooah

Well, I know ground coffee will absorb odors, but I don't know as much about the properties of brewed coffee. I've also noticed a definite change in flavor when brewing the same roast of ground beans in different coffee makers. I know after time, coffee makers tend to get "seasoned" after so much use, which can affect the flavor. Who knows what else might be going on? :-) - Jenny R.
If it's not psychological - and I think that a lot to do with coffee is, another possibility might be that some cups facilitate mixing with air more while taking a mouthful than others do - or perhaps they allow the surface to cool at a different rate. - Robin Barooah

no not really, besides I prefer bowls - clarke thomas
TMI Alert! I don't know about shrinking my breasts, but coffee has been pinpointed in causing my fibrocystic breast tissue. I actually tried to stop drinking coffee for a few weeks, but eventually decided that fibrocystic breast tissue was a small price to pay for the joys of coffee. ;-) - Jenny R.
Oh, dear. I think you just uttered a profanity. ;-) - Jenny R.
It pains me also but insomnia sux and I can only blame it on coffee. This is happening just when I made up my mind to buy a Rancilio Silvia espresso machine as a present to myself. - Dave Ploch
When are you drinking your last cup? I have to cut myself off at about 3 pm or I'll be up half the night. I have no decaf favorites to share with you, sadly. Drinking decaf just seems wrong to me. LOL I hope you don't decide against the espresso machine, any ways. You can pull shots of decaf as easy as you can regular... :-) - Jenny R.
I am working with my local Barista to find an alternative to my Iced Coffee. I tried an Iced Americano 1/2 caff this morning, not to fond of it. I normally do Iced coffee with a little 1/2 & 1/2 with a shot of sugar-free mocha/chocolate syrup. Any ideas to help me lower my caffeine in take? - Jeff B
"Colombia now says worldwide demand will exceed production next year. Will this mean more habitat destruction as farmers rush to clear land to help meet the demands of coffee drinkers?" - clarke thomas

Yeah - I've been wondering about this for a while now. Prices spiked in the mid 90's when Japan started drinking coffee. China developing a taste for it will be the real killer. http://www.euromonitor.com/Cof... - Robin Barooah
Hot brewed coffee has 3 to 4 times more acid than the same coffee brewed in
a Toddy. Brewing with the Toddy also produces a cup of coffee that has
approximately 2/3 the caffeine of hot brewed coffee - J. Abdul-Qahhar

Nice. I've been wanting to experiment with something like this! - Robin Barooah
“What attributes do you look for in a cafe? Working space, good social scene, great coffee drinks? We're adding cafes to our bookstores, and considering everything, because we want to deliver something world class.”
Tea is crucial! It seems that I come across either a good coffee shop or good tea shop, but not in the same location. It seems difficult to do both well. Thanks, Dave! - Scott Henderson
good coffee, good prices, good seating, fairly quiet... and snacks.. gotta have snacks - Freemor
Like gelato? We're in AZ, so that seems right. There's been talk of sandwiches, too. - Scott Henderson
comfy chairs are essential, a place with a friendly living room feel. and wifi of course. - Shane Casey
Really really good coffee, and comfortable seating (not just hard chairs). Hint: make the drip coffee excellent. - Robin Barooah
I'm at CoffeeFest in Seattle, and we're interviewing roasters. Thus far we intend to have one bean for espresso, one for espresso drinks, and one for drip; with rotation of season or featured roasts. The baristas are going to be trained for competition. I sure hope we can nail the drip! In fact I had an amazing Ethopian Sidamo at Fonté Roasters. Blueberry up front and chocolate as it cooled! - Scott Henderson
semi-automatic espresso machine with a trained barista that knows how to pull a real espresso shot. The coffee is fresh roasted and less then 14 days off the roast and properly stored and never pre-ground. Anything other then that, then I will go elsewhere. - Geoff Corey
I just picked up the KitchenAid blade grinder. I know, I know, burr grinders are better. But, I couldn't afford one right now. This one was $30 at Target. So far, it works really well. The grind is pretty even (for a blade grinder), and the motor can easily keep up. I tried a super low end Proctor-Silex, which could only grind 3 or 4 tbsp at a time, and did a terrible job of it. I also tried a Black and Decker burr grinder. I bought three of them in a row and every one had broken feet on the bottom! - Brian

I'm in the market for a new burr grinder as well; but lived on blades until I learned and made the transition. But it's all just steps on the journey; and everyone has their own path. - Scott Henderson
“I love the Keurig single cup coffee maker and the K-Cups you can get for it are really very good. Best part is the cleanup! http://preview.tinyurl.com/63g...”
I got one for our office and it has been GREAT. No more dirty, burnt coffee pots. The teams favorites have been Green Mountain Breakfast and French Roast. We also go through quite a lot of Green Tea. - Dave Ploch
+1 for Keurig love. I have to buy extra bold blends to get enough oomph out of a cup, but I am still very happy with the brewer after a year of use. - Marci Maleski
I switch around a lot, between Breakfast Blend and a few of the flavored ones like Mocha and Blueberry something :) If you buy in bulk, order them on Amazon, way cheaper! - Socom
“Our french press broke (and cut someone's thumb in the process). Looking for a new model! Has anyone used the Aeropress? http://www.aerobie.com/Product...”
Interesting. It looks as though it would effectively be quite similar to a siphon in terms of its effect on the coffee - there's a mixing / brewing stage followed by pushing the coffee through a filter using air pressure. I can well believe that it tastes good, plus it's a lot more portable and looks like it will work for smaller amounts of coffee. I have just ordered one. I'll let you know how it goes. - Robin Barooah
What seems to be cool is that it a) makes just one cup of coffee perfect for the office b) compresses the grains into a solid "puck" so not messy...might have to order one too... - John Samuelson
“Looking to buy a reasonable espresso maker. Leaning towards the Expressione Cafe Retro http://www.jlhufford.com/Produ... but don't really know enough to make a selection. Only one coffee drinker in my family but I like it a LOT. Any help, opinions, experiences welcom”
Well it looks pretty! The pressurized portafilter is an interesting idea - might make things easier. I had a pump driven gaggia years ago, and couldn't get close to the quality of what I could get from my favorite coffee shop, nor what I could make with a professional machine, so I gave up on home espresso. - Robin Barooah
also - I'm sure you already know this, but you need a good quality burr grinder if you are going to make your own espresso. - Robin Barooah
Bought a great grinder last winter. Can't believe how much better my drip coffee is due to this new grinder. - Dave Ploch
