Amazon.com: Ricoh Caplio GX100 Compact 10mp Digital Camera Kit with VF1 Removable LCD Viewfinder - U.S.A. Warranty: Electronics
Thursday at 4:35 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
Looking into full-featured compact camera. Has anyone used one of these or has an opinion about Ricoh? I am comparing to the Canon G10 and Lumix DMC-LX3. - Lindsay Donaghe via Bookmarklet
I have this camera, and I really like it. Its controls are DSLR-like, and it seems made w/photographers in mind. That said, I think the LX3 is like the GX100's successor. It also starts at 24mm at the wide end and is a 10MP camera, but its lens is quite a bit faster than the GX100, making it more useful in low-light situations. The LX3 doesn't have much zoom (only 2.5x, IIRC), but you can always crop in post to get a better framing. - Cheryl Jones
In addition, the LX3 can shoot 720p HD video, albeit in the MJPEG format, which will eat up memory space very quickly. - Cheryl Jones
Check out this discussion thread in Flickr: http://flickr.com/groups/84362... Impressive shots from a pro-photog testing out the LX3. - Cheryl Jones
I'm really interested in getting the LX3, so if you decide you prefer the GX100 better, I would be willing to sell mine. :) I have the VF1 viewfinder, plus the accessory tube that allows you to use filters and converter lenses. I have a wide-angle converter (for an even wider, fisheye view) as well, and the Ricoh case. - Cheryl Jones
Cheryl, why do you prefer the LX3 over the Ricoh? Does it just have more features or you didn't like the Ricoh? - Lindsay Donaghe
I like the Ricoh a lot. However, its lens is not as fast as the LX3's lens. And I like shooting without using flash, if possible, so having the LX3's fast lens is a real draw to me. The GX100 is definitely a camera with photographers in mind. I love the controls for changing aperture, ISO, etc. In fact, I'm worried the LX3 won't have as intuitive or convenient controls, but the fast lens and the HD video capabilities of the LX3 are very, very interesting to me. - Cheryl Jones
If you look at the specs for the LX3, its minimum aperture is f2.0 - f2.8, while the GX100 is f2.5 - f4.4. The LX3's lens is several stops faster even at maximum zoom, which admittedly is not that long. That's one thing I don't like about the LX3, short zoom range. But you can't get a huge zoom range without sacrificing image quality, so I'm happy to manually crop in post to get more magnification that way. - Cheryl Jones

“I'm hoping to buy a new camera body next year. I'm currently using a Digital Rebel XT and would like to upgrade to either a 40D or a 50D. What are your opinions of 40D vs. 50D?”
yesterday at 6:24 am - Link
The price has come down so much on the 40-D that I'm not sure the upgrade to the 50-D is really worth it. ($860 vs. $1,200 at B&H right now) I have a 40-D myself and I have no desire to upgrade to the 50-D - Brian Johns
Consider a first-gen 5D for about the same price as the 50D. That gets you full-frame goodness at APS-C-frame prices. ;) - James Williams (willia4)
My 40D has been great. Only go for the 50D if it offers you something beyond the 40D you are certain you need. Most lens can't keep up with it's resolution. If you can swing a 5D, you might be happy with that. It's low light performance is legendary, as is it's overall image quality. - Bill Scherer
I have the 40D and love it. I am not a professional shooter, but it works for me and allows me to work with some good hardware. Generally, you gain higher ISO settings, more pixels and DIGIC IV over the 40D. Not sure how much of a benefit those are over the standard items of the 40D, but it's not enough for me to upgrade. Price point of a 40D now is great. - JA Castillo
Re going for a 5D MK1: I have one and it's a lovely camera. However, if you have an XT then it's likely your lenses will be EF-S and these will not work on a 5D. So you'd be looking at a body+lens(es) upgrade which would push the price up. If you just have the XT kit lens then I'd go for a 40D and spend the difference on a decent extra lens. - John Wilson
I agree with James - a 5-D might make a good upgrade too. Prices are coming down and may come down a lot more, depending on when "next year" you want to buy. My next camera will be full frame - I'm just not sure which one, or when. - Brian Johns
Thanks for the feedback. I actually have a Canon 24-105 f/4L I use for my main lens, a Sigma 10-20, and a Canon EF 50 f/1.8. The two Canon lenses argue strongly for the 5D Mk I as the body only is similar in price to the 50D kit. The only downside is I would have to sell the 10-20 or dedicate it to the XT. The 5D Mk I is a front runner but the 40D's price is hard to ignore. Thanks again! - Aaron Schaub

“Does the Canon G10 fit in your pants pocket or is it strictly a coat pocket camera? I've been looking at getting one to supplement my D40 when I don't want to carry a DSLR around but really want something that'll fit in my jeans.”
November 16 at 1:10 pm - Link
Definitely not a jeans pocket. Mostly a coat pocket. Maybe slacks pocket but not the most comfortable. - saeba
That's a bummer. I don't want anything that won't do RAW. - Benjamin Golub
You can add RAW support via CHDK to many of the P&S Canons. http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ... - Donato (ricin)
It looks good though, what about LX3 from Panasonic? That is probably the G10's rival. - Kol Tregaskes
+1 for the LX3. I've been hearing great things about it, plus it can shoot 720p HD video. The G10 doesn't, does it? The LX3 also has quite a wide angle at the wide end (24mm), and the lens is very fast, f2.0. - Cheryl Jones
Not interested in the LX3 after the photos I saw of intense barrel distortion at 24mm. The G10 is wide enough for me. - Benjamin Golub
I own the LX3 and it's not entirely pants pocketable either because of the lens protrusion. Still won't do well in regular jeans but better in slacks. The IQ is pretty great though for a P&S. So much so that I haven't missed not shooting in RAW (waiting for Adobe and Apple to support the cam in their RAW converters). And the distortion doesn't seem like it's that tough to correct for. http://is.gd/7NK6 - saeba
Anyone looked at the Ricoh Caplio? I was comparing it to the G10 and the LX3... - Lindsay Donaghe

I have one of these too. It's one of my favorite cameras (and heavy enough to be used as a weapon in a pinch!) - Cecily
@Cecily: Cool, do you have any pictures posted online from this camera? I've shot a couple rolls with the camera, but I don't think I've scanned any of the shots yet. - Cheryl Jones
Nice set! What film did you use for the B&W pics? I haven't shot too much B&W so far. I have tried the Kodak B&W film that can be processed as C-41 (IIRC), and I've tried a regular Kodak Tmax 400 film. But since it takes *forever* to get B&W film developed (I haven't tried doing it myself), I haven't shot much B&W. - Cheryl Jones
Either the Ilford chromogenic film (can't remember the name right now) or Kodak BW chromogenic film (the stuff that can be developed as C-41). - Cecily

On Thursday, Red announced a new range of modular camera designs that it plans to deliver mostly over the coming year and a half that can take not just high-resolution video but also still images. The move comes just as Canon and Nikon have begun adding video support to their SLRs. - Michael Fidler via Bookmarklet

"Rumors of a RED DSLR had been confirmed a long time ago, but what of the Scarlet and EPIC übercamcorders? On the REDUser forums, RED CEO Jim Jannard has explained it all: Scarlet and EPIC are the DSLR — all cameras are "part of the same DSMC system", so each and every camera will be part of a modular, build-your-own, still and video product line. To do this, RED has furnished an insanely diverse new collection of components, with sensors ranging from the $2500 3k Scarlet to the $55,000, 28k EPIC 617 Mysterium Monstro. In other words, The EPIC and Scarlet are just 'brains', which can both be configured any way you like." - Michael Fidler via Bookmarklet

Thank you brian i didn't know the digital back . but it is too big i wish it was like a 35 mm film and could place in the camera. - Arash

My first post on Digital Photography School! :D - Tris Hussey
I’m often asked “wow how did you get that shot!?!”. I have a simple answer: luck and taking lots of shots. Really. One of the best pieces of advice I was given when I got a DSLR was to shoot at least three pictures per shot. Why? Because people blink, glance away, etc. By shooting more and shooting rapidly you significantly increase the chances you’ll get “the shot”. I know that shooting lots of shots is harder with a point and shoot but trying is good. - Russellreno
