Жаль лишь, что выборка не просто кривая, хуже. Жаль, что ее строили по несчастным 200 забредшим юзерам. Репрезентативно же, да? - sottovoce

"Bretton Woods II is an informal designation for the system of currency relations which developed during the 2000s. As described by political economist Daniel Drezner, "Under this system, the U.S. is running massive current account deficits to be the source of export-led growth for other countries. To fund this deficit, central banks, particularly those on the Pacific Rim, are buying up dollars and dollar-denominated assets."" - silpol via Bookmarklet

"The Bretton Woods system of monetary management established the rules for commercial and financial relations among the world's major industrial states. The Bretton Woods system was the first example of a fully negotiated monetary order intended to govern monetary relations among independent nation-states." - silpol via Bookmarklet

"The gold standard is a monetary system in which a region's common media of exchange are paper notes that are normally freely convertible into pre-set, fixed quantities of gold. The gold standard is not currently used by any government, having been replaced completely by fiat currency, and private currencies backed by gold are rare." - silpol via Bookmarklet

The Stunning Collapse of Iceland - BusinessWeek
15 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Now some believe that Iceland, which has transformed itself from one of Europe's poorest countries to one of its wealthiest in the space of a generation, could face bankruptcy (BusinessWeek.com, 10/8/08). In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Geir Haarde conceded: "There is a very real danger, fellow citizens, that the Icelandic economy in the worst case could be sucked into the whirlpool, and the result could be national bankruptcy." To avert financial disaster, the country—which is a founding member of NATO—may turn to Russia for help. The Russian government has said it would consider lending Iceland $5.5 billion. "We have not received the kind of support that we were requesting from our friends," Haarde said. "So in a situation like that one has to look for new friends." (Haarde was adamant, though, that any deal did not extend to military cooperation, refuting the suggestion that Russia might be given access to an airbase vacated by the U.S. Air Force in 2006.)" - silpol via Bookmarklet
i've taken econ and all, but i'm not sure i REALLY know what it means when a COUNTRY goes bankrupt - Deva Hazarika
on international level, there is nothing what resembles intra-country things - contrary to what many may believe, there is no law (yes, bi- or multilateral agreements are just agreements, since there is no enforcement, etc) or economy (different currencies, etc) ... so bankruptcy is just declaring inability to pay... - silpol

""We owe this crisis an uncomfortable revelation: UBS and Credit Suisse are too big for Switzerland," wrote the ex-editor-in-chief of the German weekly Die Zeit, Roger de Weck, last week in the Swiss periodical Das Magazin.
