"ON THIS DATE: Oh, what a golden day it was in Honolulu on this day in 1950 when Erin Gray was born. The vivacious actress was perfect as the strong, smart and brave Col. Wilma Deering on "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" and, sorry Lynda Carter, she replaced a certain star-spangled amazon as my childhood ideal of heroic womanhood. Oh, if only she had been given a chance to play Lois Lane! To celebrate her 59th birthday today, let's all watch out for space vampires." - RAPatton

'Ninja' party email exchange becomes web hit - Telegraph
Monday at 6:07 am - telegraph.co.uk - Link
"The serial prankster who attempted to pay a gas bill with a picture of a spider has struck again – in a hilarious email conversation chronicling his insistent attempts to attend a neighbour's house-warming party. David Thorne began the exchange after receiving a note from the new owner of the flat opposite warning that he may be disturbed by noise from the party. Ignoring his neighbour's polite assertions that only close friends and family could attend, Mr Thorne thanked him for the "invitation" and proceeded to take control of the preparations, inviting his own friends and deciding on an Eighties fancy dress theme." - RAPatton via Bookmarklet
"Mr Thorne, a design director from Adelaide, Australia, has previously described the internet as a "playground", but insists that all the scenarios and stories has posted on his website are genuine. Last year he attempted to settle an overdue bill with a picture of a spider, leading to a surreal email exchange with his utility firm that attracted huge online success. He has not revealed whether he actually attended the party, which was due to be held on Dec 14. In his last email, written that morning, he mentions that he plans to bring along a Piñata, the Mexican sweet-filled party toy." - RAPatton

"The Internet stings police consider key to protecting minors from sexual predators may lose some of their power after two recent Court of Appeals rulings. The use of undercover investigators as bait in Internet chats has become routine in Central Indiana. But the attraction for law enforcement -- the lack of an actual victim -- also became the basis for the reversal of two convictions against a Shelbyville man Wednesday by the Indiana Court of Appeals. That leaves in place a third related conviction." - Colide81 (James) via Bookmarklet
This is a good thing, though many will cringe about it. The right to be free of entrapment is central to our liberty - and even though the crime in question is vile trading that liberty to (in theory) prevent it is a bad plan. - Soulhuntre

they will get lost.... ;o) - Rob Sellen
It'd be nice to retire somewhere where my retirement funds would make me rich. - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
mini... plenty of places... india... ;o) far east? - Rob Sellen
Yes. Canada. Not because I don't like America, but because I like Vancouver so much. It's way too much paperwork and hassle, though. - Rochelle
there's a few Caribbean Islands that are calling my name...i can tell you that much... - Live4Soccer
I think by the time I'm old enough to retire, India may well have caught up. - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
How many of the americans here have ACTUALLY been OUTSIDE america? - Rob Sellen
india will always be cheap in comparision.. - Rob Sellen
Rob, that's a separate post. - Rochelle
It also needs to be somewhere warm and beautiful, with lots of beautiful...fauna. [edit: that doesn't rule out the far east!] - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
Vancouver is on my list as well. Also a South American country near the beach but that is more retirement mode. - Amani
We're actually planning on doing this later this year, Derrick. Reasons among them being a better quality of life, a higher standard of living, and understanding a different way of thinking, as well as a different viewpoint, from the American way of doing things. - Helen Sventitsky
Rob, lots of Americans have been outside the country. Let's try not to condescend and insult at the same time, shall we? - Lindsey in Love
Lindsey.. why do you ASSUME things like that? I am asking because i read somewhere that something like 90% of Americans have no passport, and I can actually understand that considerng the size of the damn place lol... I mean if you went on holiday to ONE new state a year.. thats 50 years of ya life lol.. is true? - Rob Sellen
Helen, what country? - Rochelle
sorry Rochelle? why? - Rob Sellen
Rochelle, Ireland. :D - Helen Sventitsky
After growing up in a foreign country (or two), there aren't many that I would consider living in just because I want to live there. - klecu
We lived in England from 1996-2000. Would love to do it again someday. - Glen Campbell
@Rob Most Americans I know have been outside of the country. You're being very rude. I lived in Poland for quite some time and visit there often. I have family in Syria, Palestine, Poland, Norway, and Sweden. I really don't appreciate your condescension. Frankly, it makes you seem even more ignorant than the "Americans" you're referring to. I do plan on moving outside of the United States. Probably to Poland or Germany, so I can be with my family. - Mattie Kenny
Glen.. where abouts were you in England? - Rob Sellen
Rob, getting on Americans about not having visited other countries is not what Derrick's post is about. If you want to take a survey of the travel habits of Americans, that's a separate post. - Rochelle
I'm not assuming. I can read your comments and read the tone behind them. Your first comment was a jab at us and so was your 3rd. Also remember that many American's lack of foreign travel experience is due to finances rather than ignorance. Also remember we can travel outside the country to many neighboring countries without a passport. - Lindsey in Love
Mattie? WHY is it rude? i ask because i am interested in knowing if that is a true picture painted? I mean...like i just said above..USA is massive... I can understand an english person WANTING to get out of England..its so small... - Rob Sellen
I had gone to Mexico several times from age 3 to 14, and then again in 2006 on a cruise. That cruise marked the first time I'd left the North American continent, and I finally got to see Jamaica. We also stopped at Grand Cayman. This year, I intend to get me hence to another actual continent before my birthday. - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
@Rob, I know you meant well, but I think you upset some people here! This American has family in other countries and has actually visited them! I've got extended family in Germany, Australia, Sweden and (what is now) Serbia. Spent a LOT of time in Eastern Europe visiting those folks. :) - Helen Sventitsky
Also Mattie... WHERE did I say that Americans were ignorant??? dont start saying crap like that.. YOU said that not me. - Rob Sellen
@Rob It's rude because that is NOT what you meant and you're back peddling to make it seem as though you were not implying that Americans are ignorant to the world around them. You say we would get lost in foreign countries and then imply that Americans don't go outside of America anyway. That is rude and condescending. - Mattie Kenny
Yes, preferably Scotland but... general UK. I would answer the other part of the question if my brain weren't so muddled from the wine I had with lunch. - The Bohemian Penguin
Fiji...ftw! - .LAG
helen.. what has that any of that got to do wih what i said??? did I say any of you were "ignorant" or anything? NOPE. - Rob Sellen
I have lived in England for 3 years and Germany for 2, in addition to several states. I can say that my time abroad helped me to understand other views, but I don't think it affected my sensibilities as an American. That to me would be a sort of loss of identity. i feel I gained insight and learned from other cultures, but I would like to think that I represented our culture and left them with new insights and such as well. - Eban Crawford
OT, but comment to Rob... USA is a big federation, it´s like not having been outside of Europe which goes for almost equally as many people there I think. Granted though that there´s greater diversity inside Europe. (Derrick, impressed that I even managed to comment on a post you started with "My fellow americans..." ? hehe ) - Thomas Bøhm
@mattie though it reads rude, rob is right. your cosmopolitan circle of friends and associates is not reflective of most Americans' experience. - tiffany. lowercase 't'
Sounds good Mini... mexico sounds nice. :o) - Rob Sellen
No, I have not given serious thought to it. That is not the same thing as not having the informationt o make my decision :) The laws of the US suit me best, the ability of the US to ensure my security suits me and I liek the economic system. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
@Helen That sounds pretty awesome. Ireland is an amazing country. You'll adore it! - Mattie Kenny
I got a passport before my cruise, but my cruise was just before our government required one; I could have easily traveled with just my birth certificate. - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
I never said they were IGNORANT you did.... i said they will get lost... ie, JOKE... ;o) - Rob Sellen
I'd like to move to Japan, but my wife would like to live in the UK. - Jason Huebel
+1 Mattie --Rob . . . everyone in this thread knows what you were implying with your comments. To answer Derrick's question I considered it seriously when Bush was re-elected but I realized that wouldn't solve anything. As it stands I consider living in many different countries for a variety of reasons but I would never relinquish my American citizenship. - Lindsey in Love
@Rob So in regard to your joke, why exactly would Americans get lost in foreign countries? Because the joke assumes they're ignorant to foreign countries, languages and lifestyles. - Mattie Kenny
Derrick: i already have. i lived in Cabo San Lucas for a year. And yes, my sensebilities were affected: i learned to hate stupid American behavior. - Steven Perez
@tiffany It may not be representative of the US, but the implications of his statement are what I'm referring to. His condescension is what bothered me. - Mattie Kenny
WRONG mattie... thats YOUR perception... NOT my intent.. sorry but you lot are ypical.. all on the defensive... over something I NEVER EVEN said!! lol... TIFFANY gets it!! ;o) Rochelle... sorry but I am NOT interested in a "survey" and IF I want to comment here..i will do ;o) - Rob Sellen
@Steven Cabo, eh? I've never been. I don't think I'd like to live there either. Too much touristy stuff. I get enough of that in New Orleans. Have you ever visited Europe or Asia? - Mattie Kenny
Thanks Mattie! I've traveled around, but never lived, in another country before so I'm both scared and excited at the same time. Also, Rob, I didn't mean to put you on the defensive, and what Tiffany and Thomas said is probably more closer to what you meant, but lots of Americans have lived abroad. Just sayin'. :) I've also found out that fellow Americans who've never been abroad before and scream at the waiter for not serving "American" food are people I need to avoid when visiting a foreign country. :) - Helen Sventitsky
I have given it semi-serious thought, but I have mostly dismissed it because immigration laws make it exceedingly hard to earn a living while abroad. that means you need cash, a spouse, or family for this to be an option in most countries--or get a cushy job with a multinational corporation. - tiffany. lowercase 't'
Part of the reason i asked HERE was... it occured to me that derick mentioned RETIREMENT... and i was asking if it was true most Amercans had not left USA before.. and I was gong to ask... why leave it till retirement.. ? is that not a little late.. I mean... what if you retire, move, then dislike it.. alot of stress at a late stage in life. :o? NO? - Rob Sellen
@Rob No, I'm not on the defensive. You made it very obvious with you "joke" what you think of Americans in regard to foreign countries. Stop trying to back peddle. Own up to what you said and either apologize or don't. Either way, own your words, don't eat them. Explain your joke if that's not what it's supposed to mean. Tell me why would Americans get lost in foreign countries? - Mattie Kenny
Thats ok helen.. sorry to put you on the defensive.. it seems peopkle assumed... bad move methinks.. you know what they say about doing that ;o) - Rob Sellen
Perhaps you need an english lesson Rob in the subtleties and nuances of humor and sarcasm. If that wasn't your intent then you would be really wise to listen to what we're saying. That *IS* how your comments came across. @ tiffany I will admit many Americans have not left the USA, but as I've stated, for many it's financial considerations rather than ignorance or desire. - Lindsey in Love
Yes, I've wanted to move out of the US ever since I was in my teens. For political and cultural reasons. I've never felt like I fit in here very well. I might not fit in in another country, either, but it's worth a try. The countries I'd seriously think about moving to are: Sweden, Denmark, UK, Canada, Ireland - Spidra Webster
Why wait until retirement? The idea is to save up a minor carload of money, and then go to another country, where it translates into easy living. I won't be doing that, though; it's just a dream. - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
@Helen Travelling through foreign countries is very different from living in them, so your trepidations are founded. But you'll love it, I swears it! :-P - Mattie Kenny
Rob, I was honestly and without any negative assumptions curious about some answers to your question. Didn´t expect this strict code of conduct... - Jens Christian Freund
that said, I liked morocco and Spain enough to live there. and though I haven't been, I think I could roll with Argentina, France, and Sweden, Norway, or Denmark. - tiffany. lowercase 't'
sorry lindsey.. WHO is now being condescending??? a hypocrite methinks! ;o) - Rob Sellen
jens.. No code of coduct to me... its them assuming... telling me MY INTENT matched THEIR perception ;o) - Rob Sellen
@Rob if you were to open geographical atlas with numbers, you will sooner or later learn that Canada has much more square kilometers than US... not to mention Russia... _this_ is what called American ignorance at its best -- casting non-verified statements with light smell of humping into chess. - silpol
@Jens The offense was not to his question, it was to his question in combination with his "joke". There is no strict code of conduct. - Mattie Kenny
I would love to live abroad ... preferably London. And yes, I would give up my citizenship. -- There's other things out there in the world and just because I am an American ... that doesn't mean it's necessarily the best. I know there are those that would argue that point but I for one would like to experience new things. - Brandon
sipol... I KNOW that already, i have an atlas thanks... canada maybe be bigger like that... but I am talking about America.. it IS massive.. never said the BIGGEST did I? - Rob Sellen
Well, Canada IS part of the North AMERICAN continent :D - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
Brandon... nice point.. cant know unless we do ;o) - Rob Sellen
@Rob I notice that you have yet to explain the meaning behind your joke which I misunderstood according to you. Why exactly would Americans get lost in foreign countries? - Mattie Kenny
I'll admit to coming across as condescending now because in fact you don't see what everyone else sees. Your comments are jokes in poor taste. If that's not your intent then you should learn more about humor. I'm done with this argument. You're a troll and ignorant. Believe what you want about Americans, I know I won't be able to change your mind - Lindsey in Love
The places I'd be happy to live as an expat are France and New Zealand and Argentina (Buenos Aires). Of course, it would probably be a good idea for me to visit any or all first though. - Peter Simard
mattie... its a world view joke... BECAUSE if that point I ask... that 90% of you never left...so... I asked if that was true... albeit after making the joke... - Rob Sellen
lindsy YOU really have NO clue about me... you are a HYPOCRITE!!! - Rob Sellen
BTW ... I thought Rob's comments were in good humor and I didn't take offense to them. Seems like someone's perception of the matter is off. - Brandon
Oh my stars, I run to the store and come back to this!? *I* would like to go somewhere and stay for say six months or so to give it a go and live like a citizen as opposed to a tourist. At the top of my list is Argentina, South Korea, and Scandinavia. Spain, Italy, France, and Australia are all up there too. - Derrick
THABK YOU brandon... at last SOMEONE who read it right.. didnt ASSUME.... - Rob Sellen
@Rob You still haven't explained your joke. What is the worldview? Explain it. Show me that the underlying notion to the joke is not that Americans are ignorant to foreign countries. That's where the offense was made. - Mattie Kenny
I'm far from a hypocrite in that I can admit to being condescending. You're the one too afraid to admit what you really meant by your statement. I intended to condescend to you because after all your statements I see which one of us has their wits about them. (and it's not you) - Lindsey in Love
I just DID... READ the bloody thing - Rob Sellen
yep... probably europe... ideally ireland... I don't know if it would affect my sensibilities. I think that's why I want to move because my sensibilities have already changed. - Shawn Duffy via twhirl
@Rob I'm not assuming anything. Dude, the meaning behind your joke is obvious. I knew it was a joke and I know what the thought process behind the joke is. I took offense to it. I didn't assume anything. I knew you were trying to be humorous, but that doesn't mean I have to appreciate it, think it's funny or not find it offensive. - Mattie Kenny
OK... I'LL say it again... maybe you ASSUMERS and will get your PERCEPTION right.... I saiid.... they may get lost..... ok? right.. I said that meaning as a joke, according to world view...Americans mainly dont leave USA...ok so far? THEN I asked if THAT was true..... OK?? make sense? - Rob Sellen
@Rob No. You haven't explained your joke. What worldview is this? Why will they get lost if they moved to a foreign country? Because they've never been there? Neither have most of the immigrants to the US. Anyone would get lost in a place that's foreign and new to them. - Mattie Kenny
WHY ask then MATTIE./.. dont back peddle.. YOU didnt have a clue! Why are you asking the same thing? can you not read?????? - Rob Sellen
@Rob We're not "assuming" anything. So stop saying it. Even with your explanation, you reinforce our point. The implication is that Americans are ignorant to foreign countries. That is the joke. Plain and simple. I don't have to find it funny just because you did. You don't have to find it offensive because I did. - Mattie Kenny
WILL, not MAY - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
Anyway... since most are discussing americans visiting other countries instead.. here´s some statistics..http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/... And actually fewer Europeans visiting the US than the other way around: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/.... But in all fairness I think more Europeans visit Latin-America than the US (at least my impression from Scandinavia). Another thing is that US citizens don´t need a passport to travel to the caribbean, Panama++, and the 50 states (I think). - Thomas Bøhm
@Rob There is nowhere in this thread where I back peddled. I asked a question until you actually answered it. - Mattie Kenny
mattie.... most of US outside of the usa HAVE passports.the MAJORITY.... in the usa its the MINORiTY.... ok? - Rob Sellen
Just block him Mattie . . . he's not worth the time. He's an ignorant little wretch and I've wasted far too much time on him as it is. He knows exactly what he meant and now he's too afraid to even admit it. - Lindsey in Love
@Rob That's a non sequitur to this argument. - Mattie Kenny
I did mention that I went to 3 other countries 2.5 years ago and did not need a passport. - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage
Thanks, Thomas. I'd be honored to surf your couch in Norway. If you ever make it Los Angeles, I will unselfishly return the favor. :) - Derrick

Having/needing a passport for an American is a different thing than for citizens of other countries. You can't base an argument of the pure percentage of citizens who hold a passport. - Rochelle
@Derrick I have family in a lot of different countries who have bed and breakfasts and things like that, so if you ever end up doing a nice travel through Europe or the Middle East, I know some very kind and loving people who will treat you like family while travelling abroad. - Mattie Kenny
Good lookin' out, Mattie. :) - Derrick
From what I recall, it was only a matter of months after my May 2006 cruise that passports were going to be required for Americans. - MiɳiMagɘ is EnderMage

Derricks´s bringing American cornbread and bbq so I´ll take that before traditional Norwegian grilled sheep´s head or dried cod soaked in a lye solution before boiling, and I think he´ll agree;) I would love to eat a gigantic Omaha/Obama steak with you in LA some time too:) - Thomas Bøhm
I love cornbread and collard greens...and mac and cheese. Those are some of my favorite American dishes. - Mattie Kenny
@Mattie Any favourite foreign dishes ? Or rather special food items you have tasted there ? (I got a Sound of Music feel from your last sentence, know the song ? heh) - Thomas Bøhm
Thomas, that fish and sheep's head sounds, uh, tempting for sure. And I'll mostly try anything once. And I can grill up a nice grass-fed organic ribye steak that will curl your toes, man! - Derrick

Chris: I think it can be elitist if you're one of those people who only follows people for the purposes of status/popularity and reinforcing existing power laws. But I'd say, by and large, most of the people I follow and who follow me do so out of shared interests - interests that are far ranging and have more to do with ideas, pleasures and questions than any identifiable social climbing.
