"These stats are based on current polling, and as September showed us, voter preferences still fluctuate in response to events. It's just that at this point, Obama has a 7 or 8 plausible paths to 270--and McCain has only one. So for now it doesn't look likely." - Shellee via Bookmarklet
"But the truth is, without Michigan--which the campaign has now all but admitted that it will lose--it's very difficult to see how McCain can emerge victorious on Nov. 4. For months, McCain has made Michigan the centerpiece of his electoral offense, and with good reason. Iowa, a state that George W. Bush won in 2004, is almost certain to swing to Obama; he currently leads there by more than 10 points on average. Same goes for New Mexico, where Obama's ahead by 8. When combined with John Kerry's 251 electoral votes, those two states alone would put Obama within seven of the magic 270 mark; a single, additional win in either Colorado, Virginia, Ohio or Florida--all of which currently favor the Democrat--would put him over the top. Which is why McCain, desperate to make up ground, has long pinned his hopes on Michigan. The Arizona senator was polling within 2 points of his Illinois opponent as recently as Sept. 10. Unfortunately, the recent avalanche of distressing economic news--especially impactful in a state - Mike Reynolds
the reality is that summer is over when ppl start paying more attn, college students are back on campus, conventions are over, 1st debate is over, coupled with recent financial meltdown = Rx for failure for McCain - Ruth Ferguson

My local supermarket gives me 2 cents per bag if I use my own bag. Why don't they just do that instead of punishing people who forget to bring bags? - Morton Fox
Many supermarkets in Austin do the same, @Morton. This Seattle proposal does nothing to solve the problem but collects additional money. Is this like buying offsets? Selling indulgences? - Shellee
Yup, Fred Meyer's here in Beaverton area give $.05 per nylon bag used. - "Awesomesauce!" Scoble
All grocery stores should charge $1 per bag. Recycling problem: solved. - Stagekid
Stagekid: A large part of the issue is what low-income people should do. They can't afford charges for plastic bags and oftentimes don't have the resources to buy cloth bags. - Rochelle
The recycled "nylon" bags at Fred Meyer are less than a buck each. They quickly pay for themselves. I'm not exactly sure why someone with a low income wouldn't be able to get them, unless they are so low that they are having to choose between eating or keeping the energy going on at the house. Then yeah, I could understand that. Maybe the stores should supply the bags to food stamp users. - "Awesomesauce!" Scoble
boo - boo on it taking so long - anna awesomesauce
I don't know where you guys live. But I use about 20 bags a trip for groceries. At 20 cents, that's four bucks. Which is 1 steak, 1 jar of seasoning, 3 onions, 2 cans of chili, or 4 packs of off brand ramen. If that's the difference between living and starving for you, you are living wrong. You could easily buy 4 nylon bags with that, and just walk to the store more often. Next week you buy 4 more. And the week after 4 more. And twelve of those nylon bags is plenty. Problem solved. - Brian Norwood
Actually I think they say you can fit 2 to 3 times as many groceries into the recycled bags vs the plastic ones...so instead of 20 bags you'd only need 10 or less. We have 4 bags and that works for us most of the time. - "Awesomesauce!" Scoble
I swear, we just seem to believe no one should ever have to put in any effort any more, or sacrifice anything. If 12 bucks over 3 weeks kills your grocery budget, bags are NOT your problem. - Brian Norwood
Exactly Alex. 2 gal. of milk takes 4 plastic bags (each gallon double bagged). They both fit in one nylon bag that is strong enough to hold them. Saves 3 bags right there. - Brian Norwood
we've had it for a while here in SF and it's truly great. I have a ton of recycled bags - from my hardware store that gave itto me free for a certain price point purchase, and from my grocery store (trader joe's). Also, seems everyone is selling neat ones too. It's quite easy/affordable to get them, and it's an investment since they're so re-usable. I usually take a larger purse shoppign now to just avoid the bag and stuff things in there. - anna awesomesauce
I couldn't agree more with Brian; consider yourself subscribed. - Stagekid
As an aside, my next out of state gig, I plan to buy several nylon bags from stores no one here has ever heard of. Just to see the funny looks as Bi-Mart or Red Apple bags go by. - Brian Norwood
Target and Dress Barn (for the ladies) sell cool bags that fold up into pouches and snap closed. Great for storage. Certain Trader Joe's also sell really cool round bottomed ones. We've begun using them as gift bags to encourage their use. - Brian Norwood

“What do you think of people who don't vote?”
September 12 at 1:57 pm - Link
I have never voted and most likely never will. Mostly because I believe neither of the major candidates represent my views and i'm not a lesser of two evil kind of guy: "The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to the doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can 'throw the rascals out' at any election without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy." - Carol Quigley, Tragedy and Hope. - sean seanson
apathy is their choice. They did vote, they voted to to abstain. - Alan Le
They have no reason to complain. - Chris Reed
I think they're the smartest most ingenious people in the world...and the best looking too...(I don't vote.) - Sean McGee
depends. if it's because of apathy or ignorance i don't approve. if it's an informed decision/choice to not do so, i don't mind. it's their prerogative. they're still subject to and have every right to an opinion - Cee Bee
If you don't vote, you can't complain about politicians - Jeff Hoard via twhirl
They are lazy and don't care about what happens. But, as long as they don't open their mouth when things aren't going the way they want them to then I don't care. But, if you complain and don't vote then you should have your tongue cut out. - Mathew Ballard
Honestly, a waste of air space. It is a privilege that many have died to give you. It is an honor to be able to have a say in our country's politics. It is a shame that more do not take advantage of it and take the time and energy to make an effort and learn about the issues and make a responsible decision based on their learning. - Adrienne Van Houten
I have better things to think about. BTW is this a quiz? - Russellreno
I refuse to be hateful toward anyone who doesn't vote. I get a little annoyed at the over the top people that make the non-voters feel bad. (I had witnessed this while out to dinner with friends) It is in the end, their choice. It is sad that someone wouldn't use the freedom they have to make their voice known. I am more dissappointed in people that don't vote locally, where I think very important things happen that effect us more directly. (I am sorry if that didn't make any sense) - Aden
I think they are a lot less frightening/upsetting then the people that actually do vote... - J. Abdul-Qahhar
Curious. I'm reading "An Economic Theory of Democracy" for class. Not voting is a perfectly rational choice, whatever the reason for it. As someone prone to activism, I've often stressed the responsibility for people who are informed to reach people who aren't. Again, perfectly reasonable for them to survey the information and decide none of it matters much. It's up to us who believe there's so much at stake to make our case. - Shellee
do not vote = FAIL - JA Castillo
i disagree with hoard's premise. it's like saying that if one doesn't serve in the military he/she has no right to having an opinion about war. if you decide to abstain from voting for your own political reasons, you can still have every right to an opinion about politics. that informed decision not to vote is a political move in its own right - Cee Bee
Well, my right to vote is not for this country. During the last two elections, the consulate in New York City failed to get the postal ballots in on time so that's why I could not vote. - Morton Fox
I hear you Steve I may sit this one out. I'm tired of the right. - orionstarr
If they've basically educated themselves about the candidates and (a) just don't care who wins, or (b) despise all the available options, then I consider not-voting a reasonable option. If they're just too lazy to go to the effort to generate an opinion, then I think a failure to vote is kinda douchey. - Roger Benningfield
...if you do not vote, you do not have a voice. A voice to complain about the situation or a voice to make change. It is free money on the table and it is money that requires you be responsible and useful with it. Otherwise, you are bankrupt. - JA Castillo
I understand why people might not want to vote for president, but to not vote at all means that you have no voice in who your local elected officials are and no say in all of those ballot measures that can directly affect your lives. - "Awesomesauce!" Scoble
So what is worse? Those who do not vote? or those that DO vote, but vote uninformed? - dafire
As for not voting for the president, this is a two party system. You have a choice between 1 and 2. A vote for anything other than 1 or 2 only helps the winner of the election. So if you care even a little about who should be president, you should vote. If you can't see the difference between the two candidates, I'd have to say do your homework. - "Awesomesauce!" Scoble
I like them if they are nice people. - Jay Tannenbaum
If you're not going to participate in our system, I'm not sure that you deserve to reap the benefits. - Stephen Shores
I like them too! Some of my closest friends... - Shellee
Is it at all possible that it's the Electoral College system itself that discourages people from voting, especially in non-swing states? - Aviv
Aviv, or it may be the two party system as well. - "Awesomesauce!" Scoble
Nothing...but they have no right to complain. In MY world everybody would have to turn up at the polls even to register a non-vote. - ◄ Chris Nixon ►
i don't vote - Tyler Gillies
Just commented...but it's not worth it...bunch of kool-aid drinking fruits... - Sean McGee
AlexScoble, I'd say less likely, because polls do tell us of the close race, but at the same time people in many states probably think it's pointless for them to go out and vote come November simply because their vote is highly unlikely to make a difference considering that their state is not one of the so-called swing states. I mean, it's quite obvious that Obama will win California, so would you say Republicans have a chance and should vote there? I think it's the exact opposite of apathy - people don't vote because they believe that by doing so they're outsmarting the system. - Aviv
I was impressed with the rationale presented for the two-party system in the democratic theory I've been reading. It absolutely has something to do with it. Also interesting though was that a multi-party system doesn't fix it. Aviv, don't think there's much to support your hunch about the electoral college. It's just our favorite whipping post. Oh, and I think everyone's right to complain is protected in our Constitution. I'm just sayin'... - Shellee
I see some real hard ass views on not voting. I wonder does this extend to, say, senators who abstain quite a bit? I mean, not only have people died to give us this government, but we are paying them on top of it. Shouldn't they be obligated to vote? - Brian Norwood
Some don't register to avoid any chance of jury duty. - Rodfather
You hear a blood-curdling scream in an alley - something bad has clearly happened. Do you call the police or do you figure others will have heard and already called? - AJ Kohn
Gosh, I'd LOVE to actually get on a jury. I hate wasting hours down there for nothing. I arm chair QB juries on the news all the time (who doesn't?), but I bet it's tough divining guilt and innocence in that room. - Brian Norwood
i'm starting to understand them. i might become one, actually. voting doesn't really *CHANGE* anything. it never has. name any major social, cultural or political change in our country's history, and without fail, they were the result of protests, boycotts, cooperatives, strikes, and in some cases violent and armed resistance. voting? voting is what the moneyed landed classes gave us to keep us from jackin' their sh*t...lol. </howardzinn> - tiffany
I've had elections where I didn't want to vote or I felt like I was voting for the lesser of two evils. Regardless, I try to stay informed and vote. If we care at all what direction this country is going in (and we should), it's up to us to vote in local, state, and national elections. It's most of what we have and if more people would stay informed, it would work. - Squirrel Girl
I think they have their reasons, though most of them not very good. I do wish we could cast negative votes though. - xero
People fight and risk their lives for the right to vote. We take our right for granted. We have a federal election in Canada on the 14th of October. None of the candidates appeal to me. I might protest the ballot. At least I'm using my voice. - Bonnie "That One" Dean
I think it sucks that they don't, but that's a part of being an American. It's a choice. It isn't mandatory. I just wish that more people made the choice to do so. I do it because it's my right and responsibility. I don't agree with uneducated votes, though. I'd rather the person who doesn't may attention not vote instead of voting for the candidate that sounds the best. Then they're doing more harm than good. I say vote, vote, vote. Especially the youngins. - ::Kristen::
