well, if your goal is to broadcast information, sure. if your goal is to engage in conversation, perhaps not. - twcook via twhirl
Yeah, I agree with that story. People who visit my blog every day don't comment every day. But if they find what I've posted to be worth a comment, then they'll click through and comment. Sometimes I do feel as though I'm spinning my virtual wheels, but I see my traffic stats increasing, so I do have visitors. - Julie Barrett

LOVE it!!! Thanks a mil for the headsup, Paul! :) ...ooh, spoke too soon - I don't see this option under my account settings... wonder if FF are rolling out in phases?? - Mari Smith
I "like", but this could really flood a twitter stream! - JA Castillo
This is COOL. What's next? - Charlie Anzman
Sorry, but this is pretty much the fastest way to get me to unfollow you on Twitter. - Akiva Moskovitz
Mari, you first have to check the "Post my FriendFeed entries on Twitter" option before these options appear. - Paul Buchheit
Paul, do you know if we're able to post to twitter ONLY via rooms and not via main feeds? - Zee.
Excellent! - Mitch Wagner
Akiva, each person's Twitter and FriendFeed usage is different, so we provide plenty of options to allow everyone to match their usage as appropriate. "Like" sharing probably isn't appropriate for people who like 1000 things a day, but it might be perfect for those that only like one or two. I've actually gained quite a few Twitter followers since switching on Twitter publishing. - Paul Buchheit
Zee, you can now publish only room entries by checking the "Entries I post in public rooms" box and unchecking all services from the service selection box. - Paul Buchheit
Akiva++. I don't think these new features are for those of us that actually use FriendFeed a lot, but I'm sure there are certain types of users who are not as interactive who benefit greatly from these add-ons. Great job, guys. If only great power didn't come with great responsibility :) - ♫ Rahsheen™
ah working now, thank you Paul - Zee.
Paul, of course. I just hope that people remember that, on Twitter, we only have one option to shape the noise. - Akiva Moskovitz
Oh, this is something I gotta play with. I wish I could tell it to send these messages to a different Twitter account than my usual account. - Robert Scoble

I've been nervous about sharing FriendFeed items through Twitter, but I started doing it Friday anyway, as an experiment, and every hour I grow more comfortable with it. I might be alienating some of my followers, but if I am they are not people I actually know or care about. My follower number seems to be exactly the same as it was Friday. And, most important of all, my Twitter followers are replying positively. - Mitch Wagner
Eclecticism: Minimalist Twitter and Magnificent FriendFeed.:) - Igor Poltavskiy
The best case scenario would be to get everyone you need/like to talk with on twitter first and then activate this feature. I find myself preferring to be on FF and not twitter. Twitter is so hard to keep pace with (not that FF isn't) ... Advice? LOL. - Amani

Robert just unsubscribed to Alex. ;) - Chris White
Chris: nah, but I didn't put him in my "high value" list. :-) - Robert Scoble
I don't get why people feel they need to subscribe to everyone. I certainly don't get why people don't use lists more to segregate out the noisy ones from the people who deliver real value. - Robert Scoble
Says the man who's subscribed to everyone... - Alex Scoble CISSP
I certainly don't get why people complain when you have so many tools to control your community/experience here. - Robert Scoble
Alex: there are more than 100,000 people on FriendFeed. I'm subscribed to 3,600 only and only 200 on my high value list. - Robert Scoble
it's a fair point but people are still learning how to use this thing - so screaming (albeit in text) is unlikely to help... - Zee.
Hey whoa there... Let's not get excited. The point is I've had the same general group of people I've been following... and the quality of the conversation has dimmed IMHO. To your point I've begun looking for fresh sources of information - but that is no substitute for occasionally reminding folks that garbage in = garbage out. - Brian Roy
A community is only going to be as good as YOU make it, so you have to put in the effort to get out of the community what you want. - Wizetux
Brian: it hasn't dimmed on my high value list. Anyone who dims it gets removed from that and put back in general population. Anyone who is a real jerk gets blocked now. - Robert Scoble
Unsubscribe everyone and you end up talking to yourself :-) - dan
dan: well, I've seen three blog posts now from people who say they are leaving FriendFeed. They should blame themselves rather than try to lash out at everyone who's done them wrong because they followed the wrong people here if they are getting so pissed off they felt they had to leave. - Robert Scoble
@Robert - are these people going anywhere after FF or just storming out in a huff? I wouldn't mind relocating to the Big Rock Candy Mountain if it was just like FF but had better filters and somehow brought the entire community along with me. Not that this is possible... - Daniel J. Pritchett
Robert - Fair enough. Your experience is not my experience. Why so troubled by me sharing my experience? I'm not taking an iBreak - I'm not publicly saying I'm done with friendfeed... just pointing out that (in my experience) the quality of the conversation has dimmed? Wouldn't it be better to post the virtues of the platform and how you've tuned it to enhance your experience? Just saying... - Brian Roy
I'm not on my brother's "high value" list...that's it...I'm quitting friendfeed! - Alex Scoble CISSP
Robert, did you unsubscribe from me yet? I know I am not that type of content you generally seek out on FF, but some people find me entertaining! - Monique via fftogo

Brian, just saying there's 100,000 people posting stuff here on FriendFeed. If you aren't having a good experience change the people you are following. If the experience has gone down, it could be due to a few things: 1. the economy sucks. That makes people grumpy. 2. there's a huge election next week. That makes people grumpy. So, unfollow the people who are making you miserable and/or come back next week. :-) - Robert Scoble
And use lists! Lists are great for keeping your favs within easy reach & separated from the masses :) - Sarah Perez
I think I must be on the "Don't Subscribe" list - which is also known as the "Must Subscribe" list if you're interested in more than dry technical discussion. - Tad, better than boredom

I always thought people quit a site because they are tired of it, it's lacking something for them, drama, and too many issues on the server site - Outsanity
Robert, Well said. Simple solution people, create lists and use them. Filter your experience here. Why fly blind anymore and get discouraged? - Mike Fruchter
Robert, interesting, I know I fired up the grease monkey script to block stuff in FF, it is working, I 99% of the stuff I see from folks, but will unsubscribe them, I just wish I had the hide button everyone is talking about. :-< - dan

@Tad: People who are interested in more than dry technical discussion should get a room and stop polluting my streams! - Daniel J. Pritchett

First rule of customer relations: If a customer is pissed off, DON'T BLAME THE CUSTOMER. I hope the FF guys are taking these departures more seriously than others here do. - Sprague D
Robert: There is a kind of Soylent Green theme emerging in your recent posts. - "Oldengrey" Tannenbaum
Sprague: based on my conversations with Bret Taylor yesterday they are. They are working on more filtering capabilities and also making it easier for people to figure out the "advanced" features here, like block and unfollow. - Robert Scoble
If I were to leave friendfeed, which I'm not intending to at this time, it would be due to it ceasing to be of interest to me. I'd have given up making any input for some time before that, and would probably just slip away into the night... i.e just stop coming to the site. I can't see that I would be making leaving announcements to anyone. My long-term connections (both long-established and newer ones) are kept alive in email, and those folks would already know, if indeed they needed to. - Ian May
Ian: it'll be a lot more interesting a lot longer if you subscribe to people you really care about. If you're subscribing to people who bore you, or, worse, infuriate you you'll probably leave. - Robert Scoble
That's good to hear, Robert. It's disturbing that committed early adopters are bailing on a service with such potential so early in its life. - Sprague D
As with most things in life, you get what you give - paul mooney
Sprague: all communities go through this. It won't be the last time. This is a particularly stressful time for many people due to economic and political situations. No biggie. Personally I don't agree with you that we all need to get along. I've blocked a lot for just being bigots or jerks or being idiotic. If you find you're getting mad because the other side isn't there for a conversation I don't see why you need to keep following them. I don't listen much to Fox or Rush Limbaugh for the same reasons. - Robert Scoble
Unsubscribing is one thing, but doesn't that still leave friend of a friend posts and comments? - Jesse Stay
Jesse: that's why I use block. :-) - Robert Scoble
Haha, preach it Robert! - Neal "thePuck" Jansons via twhirl
I don't follow all the people who are complaining so I have a great experience, FriendFeeding in blissful ignorance, except when this Robert Scoble guy yells at everyone :P - Aram Zucker-Scharff via twhirl

Seems that Microsoft is recession-proof, but also success-proof. Their stock is flatlined for the past several years. - Mike Reynolds
The cause of their success-proof-ness is probably because of a lack of innovation. There hasn't been anything interesting or new coming from Microsoft lately, IMO. - Danielle Closs
Danielle, Microsoft is huge with many established contracts and that in itself will supress growth. In terms of product innovation, there's the Tablet PC (check out the handwriting recognition), Surface Computers, World Wide Telescope and so on. Each of these are innovative in their own categories. Also, outside of the product relm I think Microsoft doesn't get enough recognition for its pro-blogging efforts or its internal community projects like Channel9 and the like. From a business perspective I think Microsoft has been quite innovative here, though time will tell. Has Microsoft also been lethargic and could it have done better in several areas? Yes. But then again, that's fine. Microsoft doesn't need to win at everything. Indeed that would be boring and quite unfortunate. - Loren Heiny
Microsoft has never been innovative. Their success rests on buying out those with good ideas, or copying those that wouldn't sell out. - Ian May
Microsoft has been innovative - they just seldom let projects blossom into products (MSR). - l0ckergn0me
I think they have been innovative but not focused enough - Tejas Patel
@Ian, If you exclude all "innovations" that were brought in from the outside or were developed by people that were hired because of their skills, then I can see where you're coming from. There wouldn't be anyone else left in the company to innovate :-). Seriously, though, check out the World Wide Telescope. It's a complete in house effort. I don't think you've seen anything like it. - Loren Heiny
@Loren I have made a note, and I will check it out on the morrow. It's 1.50am and I must retire for the night. - Ian May
