$50 billion at stake after Wall St broker Bernard Madoff is arrested over ‘world’s biggest swindle’ - Times Online
December 12 at 7:25 pm - business.timesonline.co.uk - Link
"Shock and panic spread through the country clubs of Palm Beach and Long Island after Bernard Madoff, a trading powerbroker for more than four decades, allegedly confessed to a fraud that will cost his wealthy investors at least $50 billion – perhaps the largest swindle in Wall Street history. ...Many of his investors came from the enormously wealthy enclaves of Palm Beach, Florida and Long Island, New York, where people had invested billions in Mr Madoff’s firm for decades. He was a fixture on the Palm Beach social scene, and was a member of some of its most exclusive clubs, including the Palm Beach Country Club and Boca Rio Golf Club, where he drummed up much of his business....Mr Madoff told them that he was “finished”, that he had “absolutely nothing”, and that “it’s all just one big lie”. He said the investment arm of his firm was “basically a giant Ponzi scheme”, and that it had been insolvent for years. " - bob via Bookmarklet
"They couldn't figure out how he managed to produce steady returns, month after month, even when everyone else was losing money -- and leave almost no footprint while moving billions of dollars in and out of the markets..."He only had five down months since 1996," Gradante said. "There's no strategy in the world that can generate that kind of performance. But when people would come to him and say, 'How did I make money this month?' he didn't like it. He would get upset with people who probed too much."" http://finance.yahoo.com/news/... - bob
He was a better Ponzi than Ponzi himself. - Gabe
I was curious about the quote at the end from the investor "Ira Roth". As in Roth IRA? :-\ http://is.gd/11C6 - Isaac Hepworth

“How many times do you have to tell people to check Snopes.com before they pass on spam/urban legend/reactionary-type emails. I hate that crap from 8 years ago still makes the rounds though peoples emails.”
December 12 at 11:18 am - Link
My mom has gotten to the point where she knows it's spam/urban legend crap but sometimes sends it to me anyway just to laugh at it and point out how people fall for these things. I'm glad she's not falling for it but I really don't need it forwarded to me! - Rochelle
I'm member of a moms group where many of them aren't web-savvy, but we do all of our communicating through email. I can't tell you how many times someone has sent something to everyone they know without checking snopes. Just got one that was from 2000. A lot of these moms are young too. I'm just wishing they'd once check before it went out. - Squirrel Girl
THANK you. Oh, this drives me up the wall. Same goes for sharing such stuff on FF (which happens far less often). FFs problem is more sharing & resharing stuff that's 8 months, not years, old - Kamilah Gill
tommy hillfiger is a racist!! - Cee Bee
People will believe anything. Did you hear the one about how they finally found Bigfoot? It was in the news! I'll forward you the email :P - Dana D
People need to learn that just because you read it on the internet (or anywhere) doesn't mean it's real. I think too many people have very weak critical thinking skills. - Kamilah Gill
I don't know because I have yet to find one of these "serial forwarders" who does. - Kenton
People will never change. - Brian Norwood
Kenton, I'm sure someone can hook you up. - Rochelle
@rochelle, I didn't say that very clearly. I meant of all the people that forward that crap to me, no one has ever taken my suggestion of checking Snopes first. - Kenton

December 10 at 9:30 pm - Link
Oy, if spam hits FF, we're in trouble. Are you talking about reporting spammers in general or active users who may be spamming? - Tamar Weinberg
Usually ppl just post the user's FF page in here and it's quickly addressed. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
Didn't they used to have that? Under "More"? Maybe I'm crazy - thought it was there. - Laura Norvig
If there is spam under one of your items just delete it. If you see spam under someone else's item, let them now so they can delete it. - Robert Scoble
Seems to me that FF can handle spam fairly well. You can block users, and hide whole swaths of items... - Tanath
But as a community, we should have the ability to report spam so that we protect others from spammers. - Jason Huebel

“Please give us a way to group photo stuff. It's a bummer when I upload a bunch of stuff to Picasa and/or Flickr, and FF either mashes multiple sets together OR dribbles a set upload across more than one entry. :\”
December 11 at 1:46 am - Link
If you care how/when your photos go into FriendFeed, use OurDoings, not flickr/picasaweb. (OurDoings is my creation modulo some design help.) - Bruce Lewis via fftogo
Handling of Picasa Web could use some improvement: Apart from mashing together albums, FriendFeed somehow also manages to select the ugliest pictures in the album, rather than using the album cover image :-) - Eric Jain
Perhaps as a workaround I'll remove the "Picasa Web Albums" service from my profile, and instead add the Atom feed provided by Picasa as a normal feed. - Eric Jain
yo, Bruce, the comment is fine, but it'd probably be best if you noted here (and in your many other comments) that you work for OurDoings. - Adam Lasnik
Adam, good point. I've edited my first comment. I'm not trying to hide anything. - Bruce Lewis
Thanks, Bruce! I guess I'm sensitive 'cause I've been tweaked for exactly the same issue before :P (albeit outside of FF) - Adam Lasnik
I also had the same thought at first, but I don't see nothing wrong in Bruce's comments and the site is actually worth a try. I started to use it; can't say it will be the definitive solution but right now I like it. - flapic
Thanks Flavio. The "definitive solution" of course depends on what it is you want to do. There are many ways to group/present/share photos. The OurDoings way just happens to fit FriendFeed well. - Bruce Lewis via fftogo
