Virus Alert: Big Screen Virus Alert Is Worse Than a Big Screen BSoD
14 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
"BSoDs, yeah, those are harder to catch unless you make sure your signage app is bug-free and memory-leak free. Virus alerts, on the other hand, are another story. Seriously, virus alerts? You shouldn't be using this machine for anything else besides displaying this banner, so where the hell did the virus come from? Either the machine's already been infected (a big possibility) or somebody's going to broadcast his Gmail login for prospective customers of Restaurant Basha." - Victor Ryden via Bookmarklet

Space: First Teddie Bear Astronauts Conquer Space
14 hours ago - via Bookmarklet - Link
Yesterday the Japanese announced the first space beer. Now the British are claiming the first teddy bear astronauts, who were photographed in space from a home-made vessel with two digital cameras, a flight computer, GPS, and radio. - Victor Ryden via Bookmarklet
The four cuddly astronauts travelled on board the spacecraft for two hours and nine minutes, reaching the 19 miles high mark powered by a latex weather ballon made by the Space Flight club at Cambridge University. They were wearing special suits made by school children, which saved them from freezing at -63.4º F. No, I'm not kidding. The team was investigating what materials would protect the furrynauts better. - Victor Ryden

"Look, we're not going to go and get all sappy about Logitech shipping it's billionth mouse. After all, we still prefer our fingers for pointing and keyboards for quick navigation around the ol' computer. Still, a claim of one billion served is always notable, be it computer peripherals or hamburgers. Logitech's very first mouse was the Logitech P4 introduced in 1982. For the very first mouse ever, you'll have to contact Douglas Engelbart, its inventor." - Victor Ryden via Bookmarklet

BlackBerry Love: Obama Looking for Ways to Hold onto His Blackberry
November 28 at 9:16 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"One of the things that I'm going to have to work through is how to break through the isolation, the bubble that exists around the president," Obama said. "And I'm in the process of negotiating with the Secret Service, with lawyers, with White House staff ... to figure out how can I get information from outside of the 10 or 12 people who surround my office in the White House. Because one of the worst things I think that can happen to a president is losing touch with the struggles that people are going through every day." - Victor Ryden via Bookmarklet

Heavy Machinery: Floating Cranes Are Unnatural, Physics-Defying Monstrosities
November 28 at 8:10 pm - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Those coolhunters over at Oobject have uncovered another gem of engineering: the floating crane. Because the cranes require a massive superstructure and a relatively shallow hull, designers have to approach them pretty much the opposite way they approach typical ship design. They weigh many thousands of tons, and yet somehow manage to lift thousands of tons, too—engineering that truly borders on magic." - Victor Ryden via Bookmarklet

The Pin Clock » Coolest Gadgets

"I’m sure you remember the pin art toys, where you could press any thing you wanted into it and it’d create a pin sculpture of it. They kept you entertained for at least a few minutes and if you ever found one unguarded you could leave the always mature sculpture of your middle finger. Well now someone has created a clock that features the same design as the pin clock. It uses the pins to create that time. Which makes this a poor clock for your bedroom since it won’t illuminate throughout the night. However, it’s still cool." - Victor Ryden via Bookmarklet

"Turns out, according to two academics on the NYT Op-Ed page, there is little scientific proof that this reduces energy consumption. It also turns out that this practice could be wasteful, a bit annoying, and a lot of people, including Obama, want to get rid of it." - Victor Ryden via Bookmarklet

In urban areas, it reduces crime. The more hours of evening darkness you give muggers and rapists to hide in, the more crimes they commit. - April Russo
Are there official statistics for that, April? Sounds like an urban myth to me. Considering the fact that DLST doesn't actually change the number of daylight hours in a day... just the "working shift" in them... - Lindsay Donaghe
Note that the original NYT article says only that eliminating DST is in sync with Obama's energy thinking, the next article suggests that Obama should ditch DST and BoingBoing says that Obama will ditch it - broken telephones game? - Bora Zivkovic
