just a side note: I thought Joshua's "Designing for the Social Web" was one of the best books i'd read for 2008 (http://www.bookjetty.com/books...) - redha
There's both implicit and explicit association in those slides, I'm not sure what you mean. - Chu Yeow
I prefer <fieldset><ol><li><label /><input /></li><ol></fieldset> when laying out my forms. Meaning no implicit... - Andy Croll
Ah ok got it. I want to use implicit association so that I don't have to pollute the HTML with needless "id" attributes. Mostly for grouped checkboxes. Everything else that already has/needs an ID, I use explicit association. - Chu Yeow
Technically doesn't 'for' link to 'name'? - Andy Croll
I like to use implicit association nowadays.. Cause it gives cleaner HTML. Moreover, if I am using jQuery to reference a form element, it's usually the input element that I wish to refer to, and not the label.. - Winston Teo
@chuyeow When you say it doesn't work, what do you mean? The form won't submit with the correct values or? - Winston Teo
Oops what I meant when it doesn't work is that the label is not correctly associated with the label. Only IE6 iirc. - Chu Yeow
Hmm I think my gf bought an Instax for some kid cousins before. It was a Disney themed one though with matching prints. Any reason she wants to get one other than for the instant film? I remember it's quite costly and you can get a decent digital camera for a bit more (factoring in the cost of the film as well here). - Chu Yeow
I think it's about $100+ right now for the instax. Actually, the main reason is for the instant film, cause she feels it's easier to document things that way, as we would probably forget about the photos in our HP. Haha.. - Winston Teo
The question: Let's say, hypothetically speaking, you met someone who told you they had two children, and one of them is a girl. What are the odds that person has a boy and a girl? - Chu Yeow

The best answer (imo) is given by ChrisP in the comments. What exactly is the problem we are trying to solve here? - Chu Yeow
To be fair, I saw the sale notice buried in one of the threads on FriendFeed about Twiply, figured it warranted a top-level post about it. - Mark Trapp
i saw a bunch of prominent tweeple tweet about this service earlier today, and i guess those endorsements triggered lots of others to sign-up without stopping to consider what was going on..."meme-think" at its worst. - .LAG
I changed my twitter password. But the bastards have my email. Oh well. - Jim Williams
Nope, sure didn't. Nothing in my Twitter stream is important enough for me to care. But yeah, they are shady. - Bwana
Have any journalists/bloggers actually tried contacting them to get their viewpoint? - trextor
trextor: it's hard to contact a guy who doesn't have contact information. The only identifiable information is on the whois record for Twply.com, which may or may not actually correspond to an actual person. That being said, if you look at Twply's Twitter account or the comment it left on http://scobleizer.com, the person running Twply doesn't think it's done anything wrong, at least when it comes to its marketing or opt-in mechanism. They went dark just before the sale, so nobody knows what they think about that. - Mark Trapp
Mike Doeff: Thanks. For those looking for contact info, since twply appears to be connected to twautor which is an aka for tweetmanager, you can find a contact person very quickly and easily for tweetmanager - "Bill McIntosh
TweetManager.com Founder http://www.billmcintosh.com Follow me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/billmcintos..." - Susanne "Renee" Bullo
Mark - Thanks for the heads up. Was bound to happen sooner or later ?! - Charlie Anzman
Is it better than TextMate? Or what are the reasons for changing? - Winston Teo
Hmm dunno about better, but it feels snappier for somewhat large Rails projects, plus since I use vim on our servers, thought I'd try and master one text editor and use it both for dev and admin stuff. - arunthampi
@zhenyi thanks man :) Will check it out. - arunthampi
I was using netbeans then my java runtime got screwed and I switched to vim and they say the rest is history... - Jason
"Mind urged people not to make resolutions focusing on physical imperfections -- such as attempting to lose weight -- because they create a negative self image and lead to feelings of low self-esteem, hopelessness and even mild depression." -- Argh!! Losing weight is one of my New Year's resolution.. - Winston Teo

IMO, no harm in resolving to lose weight as long as resolvees (is that a word?) have the will to stick to it - Douglas
Yea. I am still sticking to that NYR for now. =) - Winston Teo
I love this design. I really like the social media icon circles in the top bar as well as the pulling in of the Flickr stream. Also, noticed the FriendFeed icon below the comments. Is that a plug-in or something you're having custom made? - Justin Levy
I dunno Justin if it's custom, I'm leaning on Mitch for this, he's going to implement it for me. That's why I hired him. - Jeremiah Owyang
Super clean, professional design. I really like it. I would consider making the text to the right of your logo in "{ }" a bit larger. It's kind of small and should probably fill up that entire box. I would definitely move your contact logos and the rss logo outside of the search bar. - kevin
i do like it, but i would try it with a sidebar transparent background, just to avoid that the eyes go over while reading. -- disclaimer: i'm not a webdesigner :) - Markingegno - Donato
Hey all, I'm Mitch (the designer) and I'll be around to answer questions / take comments. There's a plugin for WordPress (http://blog.slaven.net.au/word...) that I've been researching - seems to do exactly what I want. If the wheel isn't broken, no sense in reinventing it! - Mitch Canter
Thanks for the link Mitch! The design looks great! :) - Justin Levy
In general, I like it. The social media icons on the top make no sense, they look linked to search. I assume they are links to your profiles on each, if that's the case they need to be contextualized. It wouldn't hurt to be super obvi and say "Find me on..." above them. The subscribe block looks like a totally different design. Maybe that should include Subscribe via: email, FF, RSS, etc. - Clay Newton
I would also do something better with the right column. Right now, its left side is very jagged. If all items aligned left and/or there was better visual definition to the separate sections, it would be less itchy. Also, there are too many font sizes over there for similar things. Look at the job links versus popular posts. - Clay Newton
Clay: Do you mean that the font sizes are similar? or that there are too many different sizes? Just wanting to clarify :) - Mitch Canter
I like it. Its not too busy. I like the twitter status at the top ... now get back to using it Jeremiah! - Brett
I like it a lot. Clean design, corporate without being boring. I find the main blog font a bit too small, at least in this photo. Perhaps bump it up a point or two? Mitch, can you do those socmed icons for mine, too?? Now I'm jealous. ;-) - Connie Crosby
@Mitch I meant that it looks like there are either different fonts or different sizes on the right nav similar type items, like the jobs links and the links to top posts. I think it makes sense to use the same treatment. - Clay Newton
Clay: that was my intention, I may have overlooked equalizing everything. I'll take another look and will make sure the sizes are standardized. Thanks for the heads-up - Mitch Canter
there's big empty space around the { Jeremiah discusses } ... I like empty space but somehow this one sticks out - maybe its the gradient that's bothering me a bit. Overall though, its an excellent design. - Brett
I'll echo some of the suggestions I've seen that struck me as well: 1) Not obvious what social network icons next to search box link two 2) Some kind of division b/t main content and sidebar column 3) Increase font size, including text b/t { } 4) Not sure about displaying most recent tweet in horizontal strip across top. Seems out of place there (especially if you stay on hiatus!). Apart from that, it's a good, clean look. Compliments to Mitch. - Bryan Person
@Mitch: Have been doing research/testing on WP themes this week (including Thesis) and on SEO plugins that allow for customer title tags and description tags. This might be useful to include for Jeremiah, to give him an additional SEO boost! - Bryan Person
Bryan: I'm taking the "SEO Plugin" approach and will be utilizing some SEO enhancing plugins. All-In-One is my goto, but I have others that I like. I'm one step ahead of you on this one :) Thanks for the suggestions! - Mitch Canter
This theme does not look professional enough, looks like one you buy for 20$. I would change this: 1. rounded design does not function well on your blog - make squared edges 2. bigger fonts, 3. don't like header, 4. too big date icon before blog title (looks realy passe) - Jernej
Jernej thanks for the honest feedback, in your opinion, what are some modern looking blog designs? - Jeremiah Owyang
"Next, let's look at "real-time." None of the big three (Google, Yahoo, MSN) provides real-time reporting last time I was involved with them (and I suspect this is still true). It's too expensive." -- Great! I have the same mindset as the big three. =) - Winston Teo
I have been thinking about "Aggregation" as well, but the main headache I have is that we don't have yet a set of confirmed queries. Usually, I get random query requests and if I were to write scripts to process the logs only when the request is made, that would take too long IMO. But I agree with the concept. - Winston Teo
But I think I am spot-on for most of the stuff mentioned. =D - Winston Teo
Yes, I always encounter such delayed update when I do transaction around 10pm to 12midnight. But the balance does tally. - szelee
I forgot what my balance was before I transferred argh. And yeah seems like they were under a degraded service scenario of some sort. Anyway, gonna check it now. - Chu Yeow
Yea.. Never use DBS internet banking at around midnight. It's always cranky at that time. - Winston Teo
Please tell me you'd already implemented this before I suggested it 30 minutes ago at http://ff.im/nIfv ! Or you guys are one helluva dev team. Or likely, both. - Manas Tungare
Nice example. :-) And in reality, I hadn't seen it yet. I was browsing FF via iPhone in a parking lot between Xmas shopping trips. (Not addicted) - Louis Gray
Fantastic---thanks! Can we have it "resolve" bit.ly and is.gd and tinyurl.com etc URLs too? :-) - Isaac Hepworth
A simple but very useful functionality! Merry Christmas! - Winston Teo
Yes, love the example! ;-) I read Louis Gray's wife's posts before he does. - Jesse Stay
