“Looking for a basic figure to use for SEOTC in Market Samurai - any takers?”
January 2 at 11:34 am - Link
Nik, I am not exactly sure what you are asking. Can you restate? - Frank Dobner
It depends on the SEOC and the SEOTC taken together i.e is the SEOTC 10% or 70% of the SEOC. The lower % the better. - Mark McGimpsey
I am aware that SEOC of 30k or less is preferable - I was wondering if there is a fixed number or ratio that is preferable in terms of the SEOTC. Does that make more sense? :) Should I just assume that the percentage-based advice above is the best way forward...? - Nik
Hi Nik, i don't know of an exact figure but as long as your SEOC is within the target area you are working towards (ie: 30000) then I would consider starting with the lowest SEOTC first, i hope that makes sense. - Wayne Brewin

“I'd like to get past being an affiliate... Can one do market research by selling a product they technically don't have authorization to sell, and then having the buy now button go to a back order page? Thus building a case to take to the products manufacturer in attempt to become a...”
December 18 at 2:10 pm - Link
I read your earlier question about this Connery, and I'm having a stupid day and didn't understand it. If you mean advertise a product on your site so that people click through to the owner's product page to buy I don't see any problem. A lot of people are doing that with Market Samurai so that they're ready to jump as soon as the MS affiliate program starts. I don't know that I'd bother with a product that has no sign of getting an affiliate program though. Chances are you meant something else? - Marysia
I was thinking more on the line of acting like you sold the product on your website but when the customer tried to buy the item they were taken to a page that said we are temporarily out of stock... In my eyes, this essentially builds a case you could take to the manufacturer to prove you could be a reseller/distributor of the given product. This would make you more than an affiliate for the company, you would proceed to make a contract with the given company... Is this feasible? - Connery Johnson
Ooh, gosh, I think that could be a wee bit unethical Connery - I'd do it the other way, but other peeps might offer alternative advice... - Marysia
Connery, don't be an asshat. - Leather Donut
Hah, I'm just trying to think outside of the box. I wasn't suggesting I would be taking down credit cards was I? I simply want to find the best way to become a direct reseller/distributor for a company without the dead ends that being an affiliate can create. And as much as we all cherish our ethical values, capitalism is truly an amoral ideology. That's just fact. - Connery Johnson
If you really want to sell this particular product, why don't you negotiate with them to get the exclusivity for that product or ask them what do they offer if you sell 100 what kind of margin are they willing to give you. Don't spend your time and energy selling something you can't sell. Make sure you have an agreement before promoting. - Nathalie
I really wouldn't go down this line, you may put in a lot of effort to find out there is not a market for it and worse still, you could goto the supplier who could just turn around and say, "Thanks for the feedback, but no thanks" Think a bit wider and either create your own product or an info report about the product, once you have tested the traffic of course. - Wayne Brewin
I think your beliefs about capitalism are restricting your vision of the possibilities you may find. If you think Capitalism is an amoral ideology then you are likely to only think of ideas in that vein and whilst some success may come from that it will not last. You could try creating a survey about the product with some kind of free report as an incentive to complete the survey, thus building an email list and collecting the proof that people will come to you to buy the product. Good luck - Rob Cooke
anyone know of affiliate programs where the aff link goes direct to order page? then you could sell it in a context related post and not send to some salespage and/or squeeze page the seller made. - Warner Carter
You can get that with Commission Junction or other similar affiliate services - Jorge Blanco
Hi Connery, take a look at my site http://amazingexperiencedays.c... this is an affiliate site where when the visitor clicks through the 'BUY NOW" it takes them directly to the specific product of the merchants product order page. Is this what you meant in your question? - Steve
Amazon has the aStore which allows us to put a buying experience on our web pages without actually leaving our sites. I used this for a Christmas niche. I had some formatting problems, but that might be something to consider. I was not able to build a list though based on customer interactions. - Frank Dobner
Thanks for all the input everyone, I am researching affiliate's within commission junction now. Yes Steve I want to make the buying experience as seamless as possible for the customers. I would like to try what Nathalie said about negotiating a specific margin with a company but I think I would need a more developed business plan and a tested website before I confront a company head on. And the Amazon aStore is an amazing widget/store in and of itself... I might give it a test on one of my sites. - Connery Johnson

Just wondered what people thought to these plugins, for those who are not using WPD above the free level? Wayne - Wayne Brewin via Bookmarklet
mmm interesting I didn't realise the free versions didn't have plugin access. Either way if content is good on WPD you'll still catch traffic for search etc but comparing to my other WP it does help marginally in ranking - Kath
I think the free versions do have plugins for SEO etc, it's just that you can only have 3 sites (I believe) and I am thinking about if you are starting from scratch, to be honest, I didn't get on that great with the WPD set up for my 30DC blogs, it worked better when I set them up myself. - Wayne Brewin
OK those plugins are GOLD just got all my search terms so I know exactly how to craft my articles to them, FANTASTIC - Kath
Yes, the free version of Word Press Direct does allow plugins and comes equipped with a nice number of them. You can also add more if you log into your Word Press (that is www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin) account directly and you'll have more control over some of your content. I toggle back and forth between WPDirect and Word Press depending on what I need to change. Your user name for Word Press will most likely be the default "admin" in case you are scratching your head LOL. - Brenda
Kath which one did that for you? - Marysia

“What is the impact of selecting Home Feed, Personal, Professional, etc. when joining a room?”
December 17 at 7:11 am - Link
I do not know for a fact, but I am guessing it is intended to allow you to keep your rooms organized for easy access from the top level. Maybe someone else can comfirm. - Frank Dobner
It is just a way of organising your rooms for yourself and you can add different categories. The best thing about it is that you can subscribe to the rss feed for that type of room and keep up to date with what you want to know. I have been doing this when I am researching a niche to see what people are actually looking at. Wayne - Wayne Brewin

“Keyword advice? Hi. I found a good keyword but I am concerned that the traffic is in the research phase. Certainly they will be buying, but with the keywords I've found, searchers are at the point of doing research. Is that ok? Or should my focus be on "buy" type keywords. Thanks”
December 17 at 11:40 am - Link
Could you give us an example using keywords other than your own? I'm not clear what you mean by "the traffic is in the research phase" and "searchers are at the point of doing research"? - Marysia
Something like "flat screen tv's" is general, but something like "Magnavox 19MF338B prices" is as if a narrowing down has occurred and a "buy" is more likely. I'm concerned that people may research for some time and perhaps specific "buying" searches put them on other sites...no commission for me. Think amazon link is only good for 24 hrs? Does that make sense? - Mike Staskiewicz
Oh, I get you. I think you're right what you say about the keywords you've got. You can check commerciality a bit by looking at the OCR and the AWCTR. And you want to be looking for "long tail", ie not too general a term. It can be tough sometimes finding appropriate keywords, but my experience has been that suddenly I come across a load at once, so keep at it Mike. - Marysia
But also you could have a situation where you could be offering as your affiliate product the *best kind of* flat screen tv. So peeps might still be researching what they want to buy, but you could point them towards the best. And it's your affiliate product on your site. - Marysia
Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks. - Mike Staskiewicz
You could also make your own product/report on "the best kind of" flat screen tv rather than an affiliate product. If you make a pdf report then they can download it to their computer and then refer back to it when they are ready to buy. The report can be straight forward and filled with your affiliate links, if you make it a pdf then your links will not be able to be over written., hope this helps. Wayne - Wayne Brewin
Developing Wayne's idea further, why not do a podcast for iTunes download and charge a nominal fee (say $1). Something that is research based so they see you as an expert and will return to your site to buy when the time is right. Claim the title of expert until someone proves you are not - no-one will! - Kim Baillie

“I have earnestly put serious into building some niches since August. I have marveled at the vintage electric guitar niche and its rankings. I am very disappointed though. There are no end of high ranking niches of interest. Finding a hole (or a Market Samurai green path) through competition is tough”
December 17 at 1:53 pm - Link
Hi Frank, I know you don't know me and I don't know how closely you have been following the 30DC teachings, but I want to say don't give up. I have tried several different niches and struggled with most of them until just recently. If you follow the the 30DC training exactly, step by step, testing and testing and testing some more, you will find one that works. I have tried Internet Marketing for a couple of years and failed until I did this years 30DC. The seal of approval is that my wife does not mind me spending time on the pc anymore. If you want to chat things through/bounce ideas around I'm more than happy to help, although I am not an expert, just someone who can see that this process works. Comment back and we'll exchange skype or similar user names if you want to. Wayne - Wayne Brewin
I urge you to take up Wayne's offer and I don't know either of you! I would not have made it past Day 2 without a veteran 30DC mentor. You need to be thinking about having a mastermind group to help you (as much as you can help others) on this rocky old road. - Kim Baillie
Anyone who offers to help with advice and support is a generous soul. Sometimes I feel I know it all, but I still feel there's so much more I can achieve. A mentor is essential no matter how experienced you may or may not be. Noce one Wayne and good luck with everything Frank. Just reaching out will get you closer to a solution. - Rob Cooke
Thank you for the support. It means a lot. I think teaming is the way to go. Never have I seen marketing as numbers-driven as internet marketing is taught here. It suits my numerical personal order. I will indeed reach out to a mentor. I follower 30DC to the letter. I watched the whole 30dc twice, took operational notes and followed them daily. I think it would be a great idea to have a mentor look over what I have accomplished and figure out where to put the immediate emphasis. You guys are great - Frank Dobner
Frank. If you followed 30DC to the letter and paid that kind of attention to detail then just keep doing what you're doing. You probably haven't found the right niche yet. It will come. If you have ever have thoughts about giving up you probably are closer than you think to a breakthrough. Sounds like your on track. - Rob Cooke
finding a profitable niche, a market with good buyers is the goal. in my experience even with good research, trial and error still exists. Never give up. You will get better and learn more. - Warner Carter
Hi Frank. I followed the 30DC all the way thru. It is amazing for initial learning. I have a blog, from which I make nada, but I know the niche is good,so I will continue. What I have been lucky to find, is an old school friend who now does this type of thing for a living... - san
Recently, I have got together with him, and another part time interneter and we developed a product. I wrote a 35 page ebook which we are currently in the process of marketing. It will be released in Jan. Honestly? If you can find someone to work with, you will see your enthusiasm grow and hopefully(!) the money start to come in. Good luck! - san
I know you probably not looking for a simple answer to your complex problem but what has worked for me is when I find a niche I go back to Google and just do a regular search for it (without the quotes) if I see companies take most of the top 10 slots I move on, but if it is one or two companies and a bunch of blogs or an About.com page then I am more likely to move in. Just some thoughts for what it is worth. - Deacon Phil
Thanks everyone. I think there is indeed an issue with niche choices. When vintage electric guitar magically showed up with weak competition, I believe it was after careful weeding. Pulling the trigger on a niche comes only at that point. I have a couple more niches that I have drilled down to more refined niches. I am choosing to be less critical about traffic at the long tail and more critical about competition &using it to build up to a more general keyword string at a high level of the blog/website. - Frank Dobner

“How do I add Google Reader to my FF services. get message 'the given url does not appear to be a google reader shared items url'”
December 15 at 3:07 pm - Link
That happened to me too. What you need to do is go to Reader and "share" something -- there are buttons at the bottom of every post -- and then try to add Reader to FF again. With something to be shared, you can add it w/out a problem -- and then if you want, you can "unshare" the item. After it's added, anything you hit "share" on will show up in your feed! 8-) - LJF Wolffe
Thanks - that works a treat. You need to 'see your shared items page in a new window' and then use that URL - Peter Cox
just a word of caution - make sure you share something you want to share, i did the above when i was testing this out and shared a video from a viral video subscription that looked completely innocent in the first 15 seconds. Once i watched it through it was full of swearing, racism & was very sexist and not the sort of thing i wanted to share. I quickly learned how to delete/edit my posts. - Wayne Brewin
