"Jonathan, the tortoise, is believed to be 176-years-old and was about 70 at the time the black and white picture was taken. He was photographed during the Boer War around 1900, and his life has spanned eight British monarchs from George IV to Elizabeth II, and 50 prime ministers." - Jandy Stone

Longevity Tortoise lives longer than you times two - Mo Kargas
I love coming across stuff like this on FF. - Derrick
I was shocked no one had posted it yet. Boing Boing linked to it while I was still at work. - Jandy Stone
I wonder how they can actually guarantee it's him and not some other tortoise... I had to take care of a few tortoises (tortoisae?) at a farm near my house and they freaked me out. They just move so slow and take big honkin bites out of lettuce. It's just menacing and scary. OK, I was bored. - anna
Runs like a champ on my box, which is relatively old. Athlon 64 3000+ with 2GB RAM. - Jason Huebel
Oh...yeah....that's ancient compared to my compaq with 512mb RAM....LOL! I wasn't even running Firebug...it just wigs out on me on ocassion and I have to kill it. It starts lagging my whole session. - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
I'm running Ubuntu64 8.10 w/64-bit Flash with no crashes so far. I had more FF crashes with Ubuntu 8.0.4. Note that the more FF plugins you install, the higher the chance of encountering lockups and crashes. Mine was mostly due to the Flash plugin. - imabonehead
What you can do is backup your .mozilla directory and restart Firefox with a fresh .mozilla. Once you find that stable, copy over one plugin at a time from your backed-up .mozilla into your new .mozilla, restart FF, rince & repeat. - imabonehead
:-/ Sorry Rah, I guess I have kept ahead of the curve a bit. This is my Gentoo/amd64 development box from when I was Lead Developer in 2004. :-D - Jason Huebel
I only have Gears, Flashblock, Greasemonkey and FireFTP. I'm guessing it's something to do with FireFTP. If not that, it's a problem with Firefox itself and I'm screwed...LOL - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
When I first glanced at this, I thought you said it ran like "bugcrap" and I was like, hey, Rahsheen made up a cool new word for buggy, crappy software! I think I'll start using it. (Not that Firefox IS buggy, crappy software - *hugs Firefox*). I used to have issues with FireFTP, actually, so you might try it without that. - Jandy Stone
I've never had a real problem with FF on (Ubuntu or Debian) Linux. Works as advertised for me! - wyclif
Congrats! Vimeo has nice 16:9 video. Joi is CEO of Creative Commons and is a Japanese VC and one of the most well-connected people in the world. - Robert Scoble
The usage of "cage stage" here seems best applied to young supralapsarian five-point Calvinists. The type of larval TRs who think that Samuel Rutherford is the *ne plus ultra*. - wyclif
The original Google datacenter in '99 :) - Paul Buchheit
One of the consequences of factoring in component failure in your every move: you can save the cases, stuff's going to break anyway ;) - Mustafa K. Isik
This design turned out to be somewhat nightmarish. It was eventually cleaned up (we had a "cabling fest") and by now the designs are quite slick, though still very unconventional. I wish Google would publish more about their hardware, because it's very interesting. - Paul Buchheit
i have! it was even color coded, cables of different colors - Joelle Nebbe
WHEN CABLES GO BAD! I used to have a similar problem and the only way to trace cables was to put a small binder clip over the wire and push it along. - Stephen Pierzchala
Cables Gone Wild! woo hoo! gees that is bad. Paul YES I too wish Google published their IT Infrastructure / hardware info - Susan Beebe (Santa Claus)
pretty sure their current IT infrastructure involves genetically-modified human brains soaking in some kind of nutrient bath. - Karim
yap i seen so much worser than this pic .... :D - zos
BTW, I believe this is the same generation of hardware found in the Computer History Museum (they have the jj rack, as I recall). - Paul Buchheit
Paul: I've been inside a Google datacenter. They are a thing of beauty now. I've always wanted to interview the team that is responsible for doing those and get some video. - Robert Scoble
That's how it would look if it was set up at my house. - Gabe
I worked in a server room that look like that too - all those spagetti cabling craziness. - imabonehead
Robert - YES do video interview with Google DC Infrastructure brains! :) - Susan Beebe (Santa Claus)
How long would it take to fix if you pulled out just one cable?Or plugged it into the wrong socket? - Alistair
Here are some pics of a datacenter I put together for a client back in 2003 with some pretty insane cabling. With this much cabling, it was too hard to manage without automation. So I built some tools that allowed me to plan for rapid growth (i.e 20 server SAN jumped to 120+ while we were building out) http://bit.ly/9Q7O - Jauder Ho
Grunt: OK boss, I've got a new cable crimped. Where do you want it? Boss: Server 99,9999 port 1. See it? I'll see you in a week. Grunt: &^* - Shane
"Employees dismantling sections of Google's original data center discovered the decaying corpse of an engineer tangled in a web of network patch cables, police reported today. The mostly-skeletal remains have not been conclusively identified, though the victim appeared to have been wearing a 'Banyan Vines' t-shirt. While forensic tests have yet to be completed, the County Medical Examiner has estimated the date of death to be 'sometime around the 1999, 2000 timeframe.'" - Karim
"A police spokeperson said foul play was not suspected, adding, 'Unfortunately, this is not the first time we've seen this. The Internet was growing so rapidly back then, these things just happened. Someone goes in to work on a patch panel, and they get tangled up. It's sad. And I don't blame Google for not noticing -- their headcount was growing rapidly too. One or two engineers go missing, nobody notices. I bet the poor bastard is still getting direct deposit on his paychecks.'" - Karim
A spokesperson for Google referred to the grisly discovery as "a regrettable loss, but not a single point of failure," and added that engineers are currently required to use "the buddy system" to work in pairs when cabling servers. - Karim
Most datacenters I've ever been in don't allow photography. The exception was the Stanford Linear Accelerator data center that Scoble got me into: http://www.flickr.com/photos/t... - Thomas Hawk
AJ, we're trying to avoid spending too much money, so our datacenter pictures would be a lot less interesting than Google's. Here's a photo of one of our servers though: http://friendfeed.com/e/136525... - Paul Buchheit
"Lewis, London, U.K. I love intelligent, sassy girls, particularly those working in consulting or investment banking (but other fields are great too). Really, nothing is hotter than an accomplished girl in a suit, as long as she is willing to settle down and have my children. I want a girl who will support my ambitions against the naysayers in society." - Mark Horne

Look for the CSS border attribute around the HTML element. Should look like: "p.solid {border-style: solid; } " - wyclif
Fixed it. The border was apparently in the frameset element instead of the form element, even though it didn't appear to be in the code at all. Setting frameset to "border: none" got rid of it. Geez, my web design of "try crap until something works" is time-consuming. But when I finally get it, I do feel like I just beat a boss battle. :) - Jandy Stone
If G.M. decided to get rid of Pontiac and Buick, it couldn’t just go to those dealers and say, “Nice doing business with you.” It would have to get them to agree to close up shop, which in practice would mean buying them out. When, a few years ago, G.M. actually did eliminate one of its brands, Oldsmobile, it had to shell out around a billion dollars to pay dealers off—and it still ended up defending itself in court against myriad lawsuits. As a result, dropping a brand may very well cost more than it saves, since it’s the dealers who end up with a hefty chunk of the intended savings. - wyclif
"IF General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye." - wyclif
Search millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google. - wyclif
'As I began rereading his works, especially Eternal Word & Changing Worlds, I began to realize something else, namely the extent to which Harvie’s mature reflections on the nature of Reformed theology and theological education overlapped with my own developing thoughts.' - wyclif
Book review: 'With a theologian's care and a pastor's concern, Joseph Ratzinger-now Pope Benedict XVI-desires us to behold the face of Jesus. Ratzinger's Jesus of Nazareth is the first volume of a projected two. As the subtitle indicates, this volume covers Jesus' life, from his baptism through his transfiguration. The second volume will reflect upon the infancy narratives as well as Jesus' passion, death, and resurrection.' - wyclif
I won tix for 'Quantum of Solace' tonight, hope it lives up to the high expectations and hype. As for the interior shots here, (esp. the one on the right), I was gonna say something, but I think I'll keep my mouth shut. - wyclif
Yeah I'll bet Bond knows a lot about interiors. Especially pink interiors (shown right)... Hmm...was that even funny? I hope so, because I'm about to hit post and subject the rest of you to it. - David Adam
liked for the photos. Thumbs down on David's joke :-) - Jason Toney
Helpful on the nature of the disease, but since "Fr. Jeff" is Catholic in all but name, he wants to blame WO on the Reformation. Tsk, tsk. Bad historical theology, my friend. - wyclif
Google Chrome 0.4.154.18 has been released to the Dev channel ONLY. This release introduces a couple of new features (and, as always, fixes a few bugs). - wyclif
