"It looks like the prop room for a World War II action film. Packed tightly on long white shelves are hundreds of grenades, while stashed nearby is a selection of historic guns. At a metre long, the centrepiece of the deadly collection is a Russian anti-tank missile, used against British forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Police found the £200,000 stockpile after raiding the nondescript Kent home of internet dealer David Sampson, 42. Despite owning most of the hoard legally, the loner has been jailed for five years for possessing a World War I German Luger pistol, a double-barrelled shotgun and an antique Belgian pistol in contravention of the 1968 Firearms Act." - Cee Bee via Bookmarklet
Sentencing the air-conditioning installer at Maidstone Crown Court, Judge Charles MacDonald said: 'These were slightly unusual, prohibited weapons found in circumstances that were unexplained and you should have known better. The defendant has shown no remorse and has appeared arrogant.' Sampson legitimately sold deactivated weapons on eBay from his semi-detached home in Sittingbourne. Worryingly, he had the know-how to reactivate them. Among his cache were 750 legally-owned deactivated hand grenades and an SAS silenced pistol. But Sampson's excuses for the presence of the illegally-owned weapons were rejected. - Cee Bee
A caption in the article reads: "David Sampson has been jailed for five years after selling lethal deactivated weapons on eBay under the name 'millsbomber' " How can deactivated weapons be considered lethal? - Mattb4rd
They can be lethal because he knew how to reactivate them. And while he was jailed after selling the deactivated weapons, that's not *why* he was jailed. He was imprisoned for selling arms that were illegal per the 1968 Firearms Act. - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
5 years in prison for selling military antiques? That's insane. God forbid someone might accidentally re-activate a Great War Luger! Fetch me my blunderbuss! - XDpaul
I don't think he was imprisoned for selling the deactivated weapons. The article implies that several of the "active" firearms he had, including a Luger, were illegal to own. - Mattb4rd

“I'm thinking about becoming a rapper.”
October 9 at 8:01 pm - Link
What, you mean that most people *wouldn't* be interested in hearing a nerd rap about C's string manipulation abilities? - possible248
p248: Too late. The perfect nerdy rapper was already done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... - Steven Perez
Well, I think that I have a stronger background in computers than the nerd in White and Nerdy. The more time a person spends studying Klingon, the less time they spend studying Javascript. While this can be compensated by a faster rate of learning, I think that if I were to concentrate my full time on Javascript, with the fictional nerd studying 50% Javascript and 50% Klingon, I would manage to overtake the nerd in Javascript skills. IMHO, Klingon skills are not as good as Javascript skills. - possible248
Are you saying you want to be a Klingon rapper rappin' Javascript lyrics? :) - imabonehead
Ooh, I like that idea. Hope you know Klingon, possible248 :D - i80and
No, I'm saying that I should get really, really good at Javascript, and not speak Klingon. - possible248
Are your wheels quite stationary? And do you have a definite view on who is better, Kirk or Picard? We need to know this before passing judgement on your potential for rapping greatdom. - WorldofHiglet
If he doesn't answer Picard, I'm going to unfriend him. :P - Voyagerfan5761
I think the more pressing issue is: are all of his action figures cherry? - Steven Perez
Nonono. I'd become a rapper with a greater focus on Linux and programming. I do not consider action figures, an assumption that Kirk from Star Wars is better, or stationary wheels to be signs of nerdiness. - possible248
can you rap that career decision? - anna
pffft! Now I know that your intention was to bait those more nerdier than what you are (ha - I dare you to challenge my grammar, too!) and not to launch a new career in rap. I'm not going to rise to it. I know you know your Wars from your Trek, and I know that you know that I know that you know. You ain't fooling no-one, little man.....rap on that! - WorldofHiglet
awk, awk, gotta luve da sed, awk, awk, windows is da evil, vi is so viril, awk, awk, shake shake it baby - directeur via NoiseRiver

I am up for a new vocation / hoping it's a vacation / it's about the l-double 3 - t / no more compilers, a lot more wii - anna
if you've got skillz, then go nuts. - john conroy
hehe awesomesauce, FTW! - wikki wik - WorldofHiglet
OK, someone needs to create the nerdy rapper room. - Steven Perez
You can be the hip hop Jonathan Coulton. :D - Helen Sventitsky
hey-- can u do a rap on Bubble-sorts?? I need to learn about them. do one and send me the youtube link?? By say 3pm tomorrow?? thanx ;) - john conroy
@anna awesomesauce: Heh, thank you! :) And I even didn't rapped about regex ;) - directeur via NoiseRiver
Kill 2 birds w/ one stone: learn Klingonscript. - XDpaul
+1 XDpaul - Voyagerfan5761
+1 directeur ("awk, awk") EDIT: And John, just ask Barack Obama about the bubble sort. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... - possible248
anything is possible - Julian Baldwin
you may have to try a little better than that :) (didn't even rhyme) - VickyPearce

“My Mom told me last night that she likes Sarah Palin. I asked why. "Because she's a normal person with problems like everyone else." Yes, Mom, and she has as much foreign policy and economic experience as you do, too. Is anyone taking this seriously?”

OK to like her for that reason. Not a good reason to vote for McCain though. - Alex Scoble CISSP
My mom is normal with problems like everyone else... I still wouldn't want my mom to be President. Seriously people. - Ryan T. Davenport
@Alex Exactly - except that was her response when I asked, "Have you decided who you're voting for yet?" She answered with, "Yeah. I like Sarah Palin." She could just run this ticket by herself if everyone thinks that way. - Shawn Farner
It's fine to like some one for any of a variety of reasons. But people you like are people you have over for dinner and a rousing game of canasta. People for whom you vote need a certain skill-set and past experience from which to draw to complete the task correctly. - Mark VandenBerg
I wonder if she picks her doctor, mechanic, or plumber the same way? - Robert Scoble
You may reverse your "normal person" viewpoint after seeing this: http://vimeo.com/1679097?pg=em... - LarchOye
Disappointingly, I have a feeling that a lot of "normal" people are thinking this way. - Rob Diana
ok people...I've never voted before...so this question might sound odd...Is it possible to vote for Obama for pres and Palin for VP? - Sean McGee
How is she more normal than Joe Biden who deals with family life and tragedy? We're *all* not so different ... but trying to identify with the daily life of a politician ... *sigh* - AJ Kohn
This is just more of that "someone I can have a beer with" mentality. I don't want a personable average joe, I want an obsessive genius brimming with training. I would like House for prez, just a political version. - Neal "thePuck" Jansons via twhirl
According to the polls, a lot less "normal" people are feeling that way than when she was announced. Humanity continues to do just fine. - Alex Scoble CISSP
@Sean No - Peter Simard
@Sean No. The fact that anyone can be fooled by this means that something is very wrong at the core of our society. People are not thinking critically about information presented to them. - ixtli
The problem is getting people to understand what the president's & staff's job is, then provide them with solid information on the candidates' abilities, alliances, history and stances on specific issues. It's getting better, with sites like and http://www.ontheisssues.org http://www.factcheck.org/ for starters, but the current media (and the medium used) still heavily favors "personality politics"--the "I like this candidate, so they get my vote" thinking. People get overwhelmed, so they just make the decision like they would in trusting a grocer or mechanic. - John Frenette via twhirl
Being a "normal person" is great criteria for having a friend, but it's sucky criteria for being in a position with extraordinary responsibilities. My mom feels just about the same as yours, Shawn. She was absolutely red in the face when I said I didn't like Palin for VP. "But, SHE'S A WOMAN!!!" I don't care what gender she is... She's not fit for the job. - Lindsay Donaghe
But does Mom live next door to Russia? :) - Morton Fox
Her boss, John McCain, is also a "normal person with problems like everyone else" -- problems, like, you know, remembering how many houses you own, or where you put the keys to your 13th car, what to give your wife for Christmas... I mean, when your wife is worth over 100 million dollars, the fuzzy pink Dearfoams slippers, they just don't cut it! They absolutely do not cut it. - Karim
i feel like somone is playing a huge joke on us with this Palin pick. Just waiting for the punchline that doesn't seem to be coming. - Paulo via twhirl
@Lindsay - right. I definitely understand the excitement that women may feel due to a history of disenfranchisement--the exciting feeling that a candidate might represent them because they are the most *like* them on the surface or in the day-to-day. As a guy, I have had the luxury of the last 200+ years of American history candidates, and know from experience that I don't agree with a candidate or want them to govern me just because they pee standing up, too. Historic times. - John Frenette via twhirl
Isn't voting for a supposedly "normal" person the past 2 elections how we've gotten to today's state of affairs? Don't know about anyone else but that argument no longer holds any meaning to me. - saeba
"like", "admire", "appreciate", "support","feel sorry for", "trust with my bank account", "trust to protect my family, town, state, country", etc. not all the same for me. - MikeAmundsen
@Paulo - Ashton Kutcher is crouching behind the scenes, getting ready to jump out and tell us all "You just got Punk'd! Awww I got you so bad!!!" - John Frenette via twhirl
Uh, couldn't the same be said of the other guy at the, ahem, TOP of the ticket? I'm just saying... - XDpaul
@XDpaul - please specific; do you mean experience or stances or alliances or...? - John Frenette via twhirl
I wouldn't want a "normal person" or "someone like me" running my country. I want someone better educated and more experienced than me. Hell, if the presidential candidates are just like us, we could run for President. Well, technically I can't because I'm Canadian, but you get my point. - Bonnie "Prorogue" Dean
These are good points, funny too, at times. I agree, there are plenty of people that I like, but, I would have a tough time supporting them in a run for VP - delgado
I am horrified today, about Palin. But I was horrified in 2004 when we watched America vote George Bush in for a second term. It can happen again, and again, and again,,, I will continue to be horrified! At least now the US is no longer an economic superpower! lol - James Hayton

Ilan Goldenberg: Palin Calls Kissinger Naive
September 26 at 8:42 am - via Bookmarklet - Link
"Palin: I think, with Ahmadinejad, personally, he is not one to negotiate with. You can't just sit down with him with no preconditions being met. Barack Obama is so off-base in his proclamation that he would meet with some of these leaders around our world who would seek to destroy America and that, and without preconditions being met. That's beyond naïve. And it's beyond bad judgment. Couric: Are you saying Henry Kissinger ... Palin: It's dangerous. Couric: ... is naïve for supporting that?" - Jason Wehmhoener via Bookmarklet
Kissinger IS naive, though! His RealPolitic does not now, and never has, worked in the Real World! Hate to say it, but Palin's criticism is right, even if her approach isn't. - XDpaul
"I can't remember-- When Kissinger signs a US government paycheck, does he use a ballpoint pen, or the bloody, severed limb of an East Timorese child?" http://www.mnftiu.cc/category/... - seth
This is so astonishing as to warp the very fabric of our political space time continuum. Next thing you know, she'll say that McCain isn't old. - Alex Scoble CISSP
