+1 Kamilah. Unfortunately, TV is full of 'em over here :( - Yuvi (has IRL friends!)
" the real problem – you" This is like saying drugs are not the problem, you are. Which is silly. Our environment impacts us and mostly it does this unconsciously. The problem is the brain is designed to process new information. You are rewarded for it. So while ya, it's our responsibility to deal with it, don't make it sound like there's nothing to deal with or it's not difficult or if you are recidivist you are failed human being. - todd
I don't think he's getting at it being easy, just that at the end of the day it is our fault and our fault alone. Too often we lay the blame on something else instead of realising they are our actions. - alphaxion
That's like saying it's your fault a knife penetrates skin when stabbed. Until it's realized how strongly the brain reacts to environmental influences it won't be possible to deal with them. - todd
I took it to be more along the lines of it is each of our own responsibility to be aware of what we're doing and the impact it has on our present and future-selves. About not creating obstacles out of stepping stones and keeping your own life and goals in perspective while trying to stay in or near the stream of change. It's tricky, all right. - ɐ ɯıʞ sıɹɥɔ
The key here is "technology" in quotes. For instance, the artifacts of literacy (books, written speeches, language itself) are all examples of technology. Some complain and/or telegraph disdain for "technology" while conveniently using an instance of the very thing. - Micah Wittman
todd: that's quite an extreme to use, but without knowing the context of the stabbing it could well be their fault ;P Still, I was more getting at the people who blame everyone but themselves for an action/activity that is through their own volition. Give you an example, I was addicted to WoW. Me, not anyone else, the game didn't force me... it was ME. I hate it when people absolve themselves of blame when it is theirs. - alphaxion
It's only extreme if you consider your brain somehow special, not open to attacks or manipulation. You certainly were addicted WoW. There would scientific reasons for that would help you understand what's going on and help get over it. Some people are for more open to certain types of addiction. I hate it when people attribute blame incorrectly. It's just simple thinking. - todd
It’s nice to see so many people liked the post. The point I was trying to make was that a lot of stress that comes from being overwhelmed by the firehose stems from an inability to apply that information in a way that you feel appropriate or useful. In my own experience, fixing that disconnect between what you consume and what you feel is important to that has had the most impact. However, you can’t really take that step until you are more mindful of how you are using these tools as well as the environment you have shaped around you. Sure, our environment impacts on us but I believe that we choose our environments. Take responsibility for your environmental inputs and try and get that stimulus/response working in a way that makes you more comfortable with how you are spending your time. The fact that this hasn’t come through in the post is a valuable experience to me as a writer who has let his skills go rusty – I must try and craft my thoughts more clearly next time :-) - Shane Perris
@todd I now regret the drug references in my post as it makes it all too easy to raise straw man arguments about addiction and chemical dependencies. It wasn’t my intention to bring addiction into the debate. The fault is mine there. Having said that, I have my own views on addiction and personal responsibility gleaned from some difficult life lessons but I doubt that this is the place for that particular discussion - Shane Perris

the XBox 360 is Microsoft's trojan horse towards taking over the living room of tomorrow. Just you watch. They are positioning it to be so much more than a game machine. This will all unfold in the next few years as the cable/satellite industry gets crushed. Stage one is to get as many of them into the hands of the general public as possible. - Thomas Hawk

XBoxes make great little webservers, once you install Linux on them. ;-) - April Russo
Thomas, I have to agree with you. They have already made big strides toward taking away any reason why someone would want to hack the XB360 for additional features. A web browser and/or YouTube (or even Hulu) support is a miss, but otherwise it supports media center, DivX, uPNP, DVD, rip music and games to HDD, the works. Oh, and now NetFlix streaming. - Phil Glockner
I just bought a used one from a tech friend (price was way right, clean unit), installed it last night, and I was blown away at how great it looks over HDMI. Not only that, but the movie and TV offerings was exactly how I got it passed by the 'finance committee' :D - Bob M. Montgomery via twhirl

You know, I'd give up my PS3 and switch to XBOX 360 if it could play Blu-Ray discs. Those movies in 1080P and non-compressed audio are just a blast. - Odi Kosmatos
Nothing can touch how useful the Live! compenent of the 360 is... its simply awesome. - Soulhuntre via twhirl
Add Blu Ray and I'll be there. - Jason Kaneshiro
I agree - the 360 is great on a multitude of levels. Can't say I've ever used a PS3, but I also can't say I ever regretted getting a 360. I use it to listen to music while I do things around the house, I use it to show photos to friends, I use it to watch video from my computer on the big screen, now I get to use it for watching streaming Netflix movies... and of course I use it to school chumps in Halo. - Tom Harrison
@Tom Harrison , how has the Netflix + 360 experience been? worth the Live Gold membership? - Joel Tanner
XBOX 360 absolutely rocks online.. its what makes it soo much fun! Me and my friends still have the 360 vs PS3 argument, but I just cant justify buying one just to get the typical sony bulls&&t - Jez Arnold
@Thomas. The noise that the damn thing makes will put most people off using it for anything but games. I bet most consumers don't even realise that it can be used as a media player. - Paul Grav
Paul, the new units are far, far, quieter than the original ones. Interestingly, when I sent my two original units in for repair, MSFT returned 2 new ones to me that were *far* quieter than the original units. I think they've got the noise problem down now. - Thomas Hawk
The last one I just received from repair is way way quieter. you don't even notice it running now. - Jason Shultz via twhirl
Also, the new desktop OS lets you rip a game to the hard disk, so it's faster and doesn't activate the DVD drive while playing, which results in a lot less noise and heat. - Kevin Fox
I bought one yesterday, for the game Lips. ;) - Paul Whitaker
@Joel Tanner $7.99 for Gold + $8.99 for Netflix, I would say that's a fine price for watching streaming movies instantly on my TV. That is especially considering I frequently buy PPV movies from cable, which I won't do anymore. The Netflix video quality is very good, and I've watched 3 movies so far without getting any buffering or lag. My only complaint is that there are many, many, many movies that are not available for streaming. - Tom Harrison
I remember back when On Demand channels came out - it was quite apparent "on demand" is the future of entertainment (except of course for things such as sporting events, to which there is a significant draw to watching live). Netflix and Microsoft are absolutely on the right track with this. I'd cancel cable TV if I wasn't the only one in the house. - Tom Harrison
I'd cancel my cable but crappy AT&T forces me to buy TV from them if I want their high speed fiber UVerse internet service. Somehow that seems wrong to me. - Thomas Hawk
that sucks Thomas, what a scam - John Cozen
I know. I totally don't want their TV service but am essentially paying for it anyways because I value faster internet that much. I think that they should let me cancel the TV service and just pay for the internet. - Thomas Hawk
The NXE with Netflix streaming is the best thing to happen to the Xbox in a while. I'm getting so much more use out of it now.. and Rock Band 2 is awesome. The starting price of $200 for the Xbox 360 Arcade must have opened a lot of eyes this holiday season. - Rodfather
I've heard you can get a u-verse package, then cancel the TV and keep the internet. Haven't been willing to try it myself though. - invariant
I'm not surprised...I've played both and I love my Xbox 360 even with the latest goofy update that 'Wii-ified' with silly avatar crap...which I ignore. I think Sony just blew it, plain and simple, with that launch. - Rich Harris

There are two phones in this world : ones with good cameras and ones with 2 mega pixel camera? - Alastair Montgomery
@Alastair, almost all the photos on my SmugMug were with the iPhone. http://friendfeed.com/louisgra... Look great to me! - Louis Gray
@Louis, true they aren't bad but when most other cell phones passed the 2MP barrier a while back seems a bit of a lapse to me. One thing we can thank the iPhone for is raising the design bar for other cell phones. - Alastair Montgomery
I dont call something a phone unless it is used 50% or more as a phone. - Joelle Nebbe
The appeal of the iphone camera is not in quality but in immediacy. A proper camera takes proper pictures. An iphone shares pictures on the internets, location and all - without hassle. Companies would stop marketing specs and features to us if only people would stop being guided by them. If only "users" would take a moment to observe their own actual use of those feature ridden devices. - Alexander Kohlhofer
@Alexander, I thought you couldn't send pictures over MMS with the iPhone, doesn't sound like easy sharing to me? - Alastair Montgomery
It's about software. S60 reminds me of Windows 3.1. Add a fat processor and graphics card, you're still using a clunky interface. - Rodfather
Am I the only one who actually likes using S60? - Tyson Key
The new lineup of phones from Nokia, Samsung, and Sony devices can do all iPhone does and in some area's with better specs.. and Android is not a phone, it's a platform ;) ..only thing Apple does better then the others is marketing and creating a hype around thin air. - Pascal
How many people use there 'real' 6-8 MP cameras on full quality? I would venture that most drop the 'quality' to save memory and drop the resolution to somewhere equivalent to a 2-3 MP camera anyway (not all you tech bloggers of course). The main issue with the iPhone is the lack of video, which is becoming more apparent with the uptake of services like qik - Alistair

Are developers excited to write apps for anything other than the iPhone or Android? I don't see anything like Ocarina on other phones. OSX on the iPhone is the most exciting platform I've seen in a long time. - Rodfather

Apple fanboys. They're always good for a giggle.. - Terry O'Fee
@Terry heh - somehow I am managing just fine without one and will continue to do so. I would like an iPod Touch, however. :) - Mattb4rd
I am an Apple fanboy but bought an Nokia N82 recently. Why? Because an iPhone sold by, in my case, T-mobile is not an iPhone yet. I wait till Apple finalises the iPhone and sells the finished product in the Apple store. - Henk de Kruyff
smacks of kool-aid to me; love the iphone, love it but a closed/controlled environment is no way to win if you're confident you're the best; the bulk of people will stick with whatever nokia / the carriers are incentivised to push and first and foremost they want a phone, for now - Bob
Well written argument on how not to be a doofnutt and own a Blackberry( which I do). So I'm a doofnutt, now what happens? Hahah - Terence Washington
I have to admire a man who dares confess his love of the iPhone to those who just can't get past the apple juice. Integration, ease of use, sheer elegance and panache are not appreciated by those with other priorities. Intangibles to personalities not in tune with subtleties. It's the software, stupid. - Phil Boiarski
I'm 28 years old, I have never owned a cell before the iPhone. It us now closer to me than my right hand LoL. - Missile-TOW
Hmm. I think 99% of people I know love the iPhone for the features also found in the Touch. They just don't prefer to carry around a separate phone. They also mostly hate AT&T. Lots of iPhone love, but it's almost entirely for the non-phone-related features they can get with a Touch. Lots of frustration, too, though, mostly phone-related. - abacab
We have an iPod Touch (shared with the wife), and I do like it a lot. We also have cellphones with AT&T. It would be nice to have one less gadget to carry around, so the next time we replace the cellphones it will probably be for two iPhones. - Denton Gentry
Meh. I love my Android G1. It does everything I need and then some. And it has a better camera than the iPhone (at least we can do macro photography without having to buy a special case with a lens enhancement), we can type more easily on the full keyboard, and we have a nice trackball to make fat-fingering a lot harder to do. You can keep the iPhone and AT&T (AT&T is the main reason I didn't get one before the G1 came out). I'm happy with my Android. - Lindsay Donaghe
I am loving my iPhone - my new office phone (plugged in of course)... awesome! - Susan Beebe (Santa Claus)
Flash News: The World != The US. That said, I'd not take any phone which won't let me develop for it without paying someone else. - Yuvi (has IRL friends!)
I ditto everything Lindsay just said, especially the part about AT&T =P - Stupid Blogger (aka Tina)
With all of the things my iPhone does not have such as a high quality still and video camera, digital compass, background notifications for all my apps (especially Facebook and Google Talk) and maybe a digital TV and radio tuner, I still don't care for any other phone. I show it to friends and family and they are instantly sold. The latest update by Google Maps for public transit is just killer. - Rolf Schewe
I loved the post, and totally understand...for me it's more important to get quality out of what I could create with an N97, than the quality of the phone itself when I demonstrate it to people...but that's a fairly unusual perspective by the looks of things...I like the iPhone, but would love N97 functionality with it! - Badger Gravling
Others may not agree with my conclusion, but every time I see a "non-iPhone" now, I know people are selling themselves short. And every time there are new applications developed for the platform, Apple's lead gets bigger. - Louis Gray
I stopped in to a Verizon store to try out the Storm. I walked out about 30 seconds later thinking the exact same thing... there's 2 phones. iPhone and not iPhone. - Fraser
@Fraser: I haven't had a chance to try out the Storm yet. What did you not like about it? - Jay
@Jay - they removed the things that used to make the BlackBerry a BlackBerry (and a good alternative to the iPhone in some people's eyes) and tried to make a phone that could compete head-on with the iPhone. The touch screen felt like a toy, clicking to select a key was odd, the UI was not intuitive nor natural for a touch screen, etc. By going down this path they open a direct 1:1 comparison with the iPhone. Which is a brutal mistake. - Fraser

“There is the Union, then the Intersection, but what is the third option for elements only in one or the other?”

Complement of Intersection? Xor? (Ignoring complement of Union, that is) - Yuvi (has IRL friends!)
Ah! Complement. Yeah. I need to figure out how to get the complement of two RSS feeds. Pipes only seems to provide The Union and the Intersection. - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★
Is there a minus operator? You can do the union of (A-B) and (B-A). - Rob Diana
Don't think there is. I was pretty sure there was a simple way to do it math-wise...guess I will keep digging - ♫ Rahsheen ™ ★

Thanks for the shoutout, Yuvi. - Louis Gray
Congrats! Btw, is that the app that runs statbot? - Shivanand Velmurugan
@Shivanand: Yes. The recent inactivity over at Statbot was because the app was undergoing a major rewrite (and my college was taking over too) - Yuvi (has IRL friends!)

“I have 1 banana that's getting pretty ripe. I bought 4 to make the muffins and banana bread, but was left with one extra. Nobody ate the banana bread @ Thanksgiving so it's in the freezer, which means I don't need to make a new loaf... so what else can I make with just 1 banana?”

Cut it up and put it on some cereal? - Yolanda
Funny (or sad) fact: I love most baked goods that contain banana, but don't really care for actually eating bananas. Smoothie's a good idea, though, I even have some frozen strawberries and blueberries I can throw in. I never think to drink smoothies in the winter. Merci! - The Bohemian Penguin
Banana+Peanut Butter = bliss - Mitch
'Banana Split' (sans icecream) —oven baked. In aluminum foil wrap sliced banana, marshmallows and chocolate chips. Heat briefly in oven. Serve immediately. We had this two nights ago. - Micah Wittman
Those classic Tupperware ice pop makers come in handy for things like this. I mash the single banana and fill as many of those little things as it will fill (usually 2 or 3) and have a nice natural inexpensive frozen treat. Much better than the high prices of "frozen fruit" where some company did it for you and inserted a wooden stick and wrapped it in lots of useless packaging. And if you do it yourself, you know what is in it. - April Russo
The amount of banana in your recipe for muffins/banana bread can be substituted with an equal amount of any pureed fruit. It doesn't have to be banana, or pure banana. Since you have blueberries and strawberries, why not blend them all together and make another loaf? - April Russo
get some nutella. game over! - Cee Bee
